Does the bond stop the fabric from fraying? Or do you have to zig zag stitch around the map?

Yes the ultra hold does. You can also zig zag stitch if you know how to sew

You can use a zigzag stitch around the map. If you use heat and bond ultra it's strong enough that you don't need to hem
