In this video, John discusses the Rule of 25 for retirement and some questions to ask that may accelerate your ability to retire sooner. We are loving retirement and hope to both help and inspire others.
Thanks for the insight. I've always planned myself and have no plans of using a retirement planner. Unless I'm wrong, they typically charge ~1% of your portfolio. Let's say you have 3M in retirement and live 30 years (in your case 85, which is reasonable). That's 30K q yr or 900K over your retirement. Rather than cutting your spending, perhaps reduce your expenses. BTW, Venice was my favorite area in Italy, with a close second being the Cinque Terre Mediterranean coast.
Where and how do you have family gatherings with your children and grandchildren? Do you have a video or content where you discuss this? One of the beliefs that I want to dispell for my wife and I is the idea that, if I have a smaller place in retirement (condo, villa, etc) then the kids and grandkids wont have a place to gather with us.

Thank you for INSPIRING (you said it) me. I'm a 60 year old single senior flight attendant, and I'm considering my side hustle to be "part time" work as a flight attendant! That's a more than $30K in annual income to work 6-8 days! Dave Ramsey has lived at my house for a long time; almost debt free just the law school debt and house (yeap, I'm a lawyer too). Thank you John and Bev for this great channel. Early Retirement is my current goal and something that I am working on in the next decade. Healthcare is my main concern about retire early and I like your idea of living in another country 6 months a year to cover it. I am hoping to retire in 10 more years.
Thanks so much. We’ve had a wonderful time in Italy, except we gone a little heavy with the pasta, pizza, gelato and chocolate. 😬 Headed out for a walk to redeem ourselves. John and Bev
REALLY great advice!! We agree with everything you said. My parents who are financially free gave my sister and me a set limit for our weddings ($20,000 to be specific), and we were very grateful for that! There is NO need to get extravagant with your children's weddings OR their college costs, as these can really set you back when it comes time to retire. Thank you, John and Bev!
This video is very coincidental for me… we filmed a video today in Bourton on the Water, which is known as “the Venice of the Cotswolds” … we had a bridge in the background 😉
I´m getting there. Have a budget, funds available, savings, no debt but still unsure. The videos give good insight. Actually going to Italy in a month but Venice is not in the plan.
John, Bev. Thank you for empowering my wife and I. We were about to buy into a 55+ community but after watching your channel we walked away from giving a down payment. We are meeting with your financial advisors, Frankly Finances to get started. We do have a question for you: What are you future plans when the time comes to “age in place”. Thanks Faon and Diana from Orlando, Florida
That’s great to hear. We enjoyed our gated golf community, but selling and traveling the world was the best decision we ever made. No plans to “age in place” at this point, but it will likely be near one of our 5 children when the time comes. We actually can’t see ourselves buying again, but perhaps renting. John and Bev
Love it. Close to 55 and I'm getting the itch. Just don't know if we're ready. Good food for thought. Funny u mentioned colombia. Grew up in the states but still very connected and thought of making a permanent home there and just travel. Thanks for all the tips.
Thanks and good luck with the retirement plans. Let us know if we can help in any way. We love Medellin and plan to head back for a week next year. John and Bev
It is such a great feeling to be debt free. Never really thought that a I could be, but some great changes in our life, one of which selling everything and travel full time was a great way for us to achieve it. Great video with good advice to help others figure out how to do the same. - Debbie

Thanks for the quality content. To those reading all of the comments, beware of fake claims from fakes claiming wild investment/trading returns (Mrs. Mitchell Roland, Mrs. Charlene, etc). Unfortunately, quality content such as provided by this channel by John and Bev becomes a target for scammers. Good advice. I've always been an advocate of living within your means. Served us well over the years. I have $1M in savings, debt free and 30. I’d like to retire and travel but I’m scared because everyone around me is still grinding and happily giving their time to corporate America!
First, congrats on doing an amazing job of saving. Here's an idea. Why don't you just take a year off and go see the world. Don't burn any bridges, just take a sabbatical. It won't deplete your savings, it keeps future options open, and we know that the world will change you in ways you never expect. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Congratulations on your Great achievement having a 1 million in saving, if you spend less than $40k annually you can definitely retire (not considering if you are planning to get married and have kids, that’s a different mountain to climb) , but if you spend more then 1m is not enough. Hope it helps
You need enough cash/income to make it until you can draw from ira/401k without penalties, and do that until you can draw soc sec WHEN, is up to your situation, but this will also work! (Whether 55yo, or 45yo - do the math to determine what you NEED) Reminder, that ret accts are tied up til 59-1/2 in most cases - so think about those mutual/brokerage accts he mentions - so you have a cess to liquid cash
Yes, great point Rob. The Rule of 55 could be a big help to people that retire between 55 and 59 1/2. Thanks so much for commenting and hope you can join us for our journey around the world. John and Bev
Thank you for the rule of thumb...I am debt free..no car, c/c or mortgage...56..turning 57 in a few weeks..I did calculaion and I have a total of 32...I can currently can save almost half of my take home.....I would love to retire...but I am still to young to tap into my retirement accounts and I dont know what to do about health insurance...maybe work pt..for the health ins and have a little more free time? Thanks
25 times means you live of income only. You are not allowing for slow draw down of capital. The number is less than 25. I have clients who are living comfortably on 12 times. Of course more is better and it depends on personal circumstances.
I like the concept of having a formula to calculate retirement a savings goal but it doesn’t consider pension $. This isn’t considered in your calculation
All there. Have had no debt for more than a decade. Everything paid for. Kiddo out of house and settled into a career. Going out at age 57. We have 4 years living expenses in cash, 3 years in non-retirement conservative investments. So plenty of bridge funds and then some. Then about 20 years in IRAs. So if the investments were all in cash reserves or say bonds earning 1 to 2 %, we would still not run out of money and that's without turning on SS. Once SS happens, well... investments will rarely be needed for much. Going to leave investments mostly in index and good growth funds with long track records of above market performance. In up years, we will take whatever off those to back feed the cash and non retirement funds and will be doing some principle draw downs in our mid to late 60s to reduce the pain of RMDs should we get there. As well as the trust planning for inheritance so we do not overly burden our child with big tax hits from IRA inheritance where currently they have 10 years to draw it all down. Love your content, keep it up and have fun !
GREAT CHANNEL 🙂 and very happy your a fellow Hoosier...... Im from NW Indiana.... My question is you do you have medical insurance you carry with you or would you advise on this issue. Thank you Kelly Munster,Indiana
We keep our US based retiree coverage. High deductible and expensive, but we are keeping it for catastrophic coverage. We have pre-existing conditions and international coverage limits time in US, which limits our options. We get our medical treatment in Colombia to keep costs down. Best wishes on your adventures!
Thanks so much for the comment. That is an excellent idea!! We are actually planning a video where we talk about world travel costs. We will also incorporate some individual item costs into some future videos, but give us a few weeks. We were recently amazed in Serbia when we went to see Top Gun Maverick, and only paid $4 for a movie ticket and a coke.😁 Thanks again for the great suggestion and please keep the ideas coming. It is very helpful. John and Bev
This is all great advice! Loved every point! Our challenge is that we spend a big chunk of the year overseas… in a country with a HIGH cost of living, not low😆 lol
Live in the Philippines:) I’m building a beautiful house close to the white beaches and international airport. I can see myself waiting for a last minute airline promo to Korea or Japan 😉. I wanna build one too for expats.
Thanks so much. We won’t be doing a travel vlog from Venice. We selected an Airbnb near train stations in each of the 6 cities we visited across northern Italy. Thanks again for following along. John and Bev
Well that would be impossible to do considering I'm in my late 50s and I'm more interested in investments that could set me up for retirement in my 60s, my goal is at least $2million.
Interesting. I have a lump sum doing absolutely nothing at all in my bank account, I wanna get something started with it. You seem to be doing excellent for yourself, how do you achieve this?
@Erica Stewart That's impressive. Are you giving her your money or the money stays in your trading account? What's really the idea behind copying trades.
I'm waiting for maximum social security benefits or close to it, about age 65. and then it would be financially efficient to retire in a foreign country. Full time. Because it's less expensive...in one of the Latin countries...
Thanks and that sounds like a plan. Check out some of our videos from Central America and Colombia for ideas. There are many low cost options. We are evaluating many potential places as we are traveling the world. John and Bev
Hi John, new subscriber here. Loving your videos and just making my way through your back catalogue. I have a few questions about your investments and how they fund your retirement. You may already have done a video/s that covers my questions so please point me in the right direction if that's the case. Here goes. 1) how much money do you have invested, what are you average yearly expenses, and are you using the 4% rule from your investments to fund your retirement? 2) where do you have your money invested, i.e. low cost index funds and ETFs? What about real estate & renting out property? 3) does RUclips provide you much of an income, i.e. does it fund your day to day expenses, or is it more a labour of love and provides beer-money income? Thank you John and great work! Cheers
Hi Ian, We don’t share specific financial information online, but we have some other videos that talk about how we retired early. RUclips monetization takes a long time and hard work, but we are getting a little beer/coffee money 🤣
No home in US, but rotate through our 5 children when back visiting. Very few personal items and already divided keepsakes to kids! Health insurance is expensive high-deductible retiree coverage, but we kept due to pre-existing conditions. We currently do all of our medical work in Medellin Colombia because it is so much cheaper and helps out of pocket. Hope this helps and you can follow along on our journey John and Bev retirementtravelers.com
I don’t see the contact info for your retirement planner. Were you going to drop that in the comments or did i just miss it somewhere? I love your videos btw. Hoping to get there soon.

Many people will have pension/Social Security income (if they are older than you) so that would offset a portion of the monthly expenses they think they will need. Using your example of 5000/month traveling if their income is 3000/month the amount of savings they have could be less and still be okay...correct?
That is correct. We don't have SS income, but we offset with RUclips income. Hope you are enjoying our channel. Safe travels, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
We use an expensive, high deductible retiree coverage from BCBS. Basically there for catastrophic situation like cancer, etc. Some of the international policies limit the time you can spend in US, and we didn’t want that restriction. We get our medical care done in Medellin, Colombia to reduce out of pocket expenses. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com
Just subtract your pension from your retirement budget. Let’s say you need 60K in retirement and your pension in 40k per year. That leaves 20K times 25 (rule of 25) or 500K that you would need to have invested. Hope this helps, John and Bev
@@RetirementTravelers I was going to ask the same question! A video on how you pack/travel light would be interesting since you are go go go all the time! For example, what about souvenirs? Your camera equipment/electronics? How do you organize all the contents of your life all and lug it everywhere you go? I can't imagine!
@@ChristinaLorraineYoung We are planning a packing video because we have recently gone to just carrying backpacks. It feels like our 5-YR journey of minimalism is about finished. We will give more detail in that video. Stay tuned. John and Bev
this video isn't helpful for my situation, im quite unique...low income, debt free, but houseless. do you have a video on financial planners? dont really know what they do
I worked in manufacturing for 34 years and we retired 2 years ago. We decided to do something different in retirement so we sold everything, started our channel and plan to travel the world for at least 10 years. Hope you can follow along on our journey. John and Bev
That’s awesome. I would look at it a couple ways. Subtract your pension amount from your expected expenses and this new amount will reduce how much you need saved. Another way to look at is a $40,000/ year pension is kind of like having another 1 million in the bank. Hope this helps. Does your pension adjust for inflation? John and Bev
@@RetirementTravelers No, there is no COLA on my pension, unfortunately. Thanks for the response/advice!!! I can’t wait to retire and travel full time!!
It was really a long term decision. We were paying high HOA and golf dues, taxes and insurance made just holding on to home impractical. We sold and invested the money for long term use. We also know that when we do decide to get a house someday, it will be much smaller. Hope this answers your questions. John and Bev
John, Nice videos.! I like your content. Can you please do a video on health insurance. I am in Canada but I am sure that the basic ideas would be very similar. Besides increasing your deductible, what else do you do to lower health insurance cost ?
Thanks. Great suggestion. We do have that one on the list of videos at some point. The main thing we are doing is getting dental, vision, checkups and prescriptions overseas. It is SO much cheaper than in the US. John and Bev
We worked really hard for 34 years prior to retirement. We just finished a wonderful two month visit in US with our family. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
When it comes to investment, diversification is key. That is why I have my interests set on key sectors based on performance and projected growth. They range from the EV sector, renewable energy, Tech, and Health.
The best strategy to use in trading stock is to trade with a professional who understands the market quite well, that way maximum profit is guaranteed. Because I have learned along the way of my investment that research and analysis are important, note that experience is more needed than luck when it comes to the stock market.
I have been thinking about how to grow my reserve by 100% or more within months. I will be grateful if you can give tips or anything on how to make good market picks and how I can get my portfolio diversified and balanced to meet up my target

Hi , just found your channel. Same age. One concern i have about selling home and traveling world is the rapid escalation in home prices. That if I sell and a couple years later not be able to afford what I left. What is your solution to this? Thank you!
Hi Phil, Great question. Here is our particular solution to your dilemma. 1. We plan to travel full time for at least 10 years. A lot can happen with home prices over a decade. We expect there will be another lower cycle at some point. We are in no hurry. 2. After living in an Airstream for two years, we realized we never need another big home. When and If we ever buy another home, it will be much smaller. 3. We took the money from our home sale and invested all of it. When we need it for another home someday, we should have funds available. 4. With home ownership, there are significant costs of maintaining a home like taxes, insurance, maintenance, HOA fees, etc that we didn’t want to pay every year. We know selling everything and traveling is a big leap of faith, but it is the best thing we ever did. Hope this helps, John and Bev
Thanks for the comment. I touched on this in the part about additional income reduces the amount you need from investment income, but I didn’t specifically talk about SS or pensions. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. John and Bev
How are you doing mr John iam Arabic lady subscriber to several British and American RUclips channels I didn’t send comments to your channel from long time happy father day to you all fathers around world actually we in Arabic countries the legal age of retirement for both males and female is 60 years old but if the employees worked for twenty years old can ask for early retirement even if they not reach age of 60 have half salary not full igot surprised when i just know that in uk employees not force to retire it’s up to them when they decide to stop working and you as too in USA age discrimination in employment act amended in year 1978 to prohibit mandatory retirement before age of 70 in most occupations full retirement age is 66 even in our educational system in past if students of high school graduate more than three years they consider their certificates old they can’t have chance even to be affiliated students but last decade they allow students to be regular students if they have good grade at school to study at university or be affiliated students at any age and we have great Arabic proverb said age began at 60 you must enjoy life and learn at any age make use of past experiences stay safe blessed good luck to you your dearest ones

There is NO need to get extravagant with your children's weddings OR their college costs, as these can really set you back when it comes time to retire. Thank you, John and Bev!
Thanks so much. We do hope that people find this helpful and it could speed up their ability to retire. John and Bev
This video is very coincidental for me… we filmed a video today in Bourton on the Water, which is known as “the Venice of the Cotswolds” … we had a bridge in the background 😉
That’s interesting. We did a video from Giethoorn, which is known as the “Venice of the Netherlands”

John, Bev. Thank you for empowering my wife and I. We were about to buy into a 55+ community but after watching your channel we walked away from giving a down payment. We are meeting with your financial advisors, Frankly Finances to get started. We do have a question for you:
What are you future plans when the time comes to “age in place”.
Thanks

That’s great to hear. We enjoyed our gated golf community, but selling and traveling the world was the best decision we ever made. No plans to “age in place” at this point, but it will likely be near one of our 5 children when the time comes. We actually can’t see ourselves buying again, but perhaps renting.

Congratulations on your Great achievement having a 1 million in saving, if you spend less than $40k annually you can definitely retire (not considering if you are planning to get married and have kids, that’s a different mountain to climb) , but if you spend more then 1m is not enough. Hope it helps
Becoming debt free is a GREAT goal for everyone at any age! 🤑👍
We think it is the most important thing!
You need enough cash/income to make it until you can draw from ira/401k without penalties, and do that until you can draw soc sec
WHEN, is up to your situation, but this will also work! (Whether 55yo, or 45yo - do the math to determine what you NEED)
Reminder, that ret accts are tied up til 59-1/2 in most cases - so think about those mutual/brokerage accts he mentions - so you have a cess to liquid cash
Great reminder. Thanks for sharing.

25 times means you live of income only. You are not allowing for slow draw down of capital. The number is less than 25. I have clients who are living comfortably on 12 times. Of course more is better and it depends on personal circumstances.

Well that would be impossible to do considering I'm in my late 50s and I'm more interested in investments that could set me up for retirement in my 60s, my goal is at least $2million.
Investing in stocks is a good idea, a good trading system would put you through many days of success.
Interesting. I have a lump sum doing absolutely nothing at all in my bank account, I wanna get something started with it. You seem to be doing excellent for yourself, how do you achieve this?
@Florence sean Exactly, the trick is to diversify your investment, don't panic when everyone else is and invest consistently.
@Erica Stewart Hello Do you trade on your own?

Where do you live and where do you keep your minimal things like family photos and clothes? Health Insurance?
No home in US, but rotate through our 5 children when back visiting. Very few personal items and already divided keepsakes to kids! Health insurance is expensive high-deductible retiree coverage, but we kept due to pre-existing conditions. We currently do all of our medical work in Medellin Colombia because it is so much cheaper and helps out of pocket. Hope this helps and you can follow along on our journey

Forgive me if I've missed this but what do you guys use for health insurance please?
We use an expensive, high deductible retiree coverage from BCBS. What about people with a pension? How much is needed then? Thanks
Just subtract your pension from your retirement budget. Let’s say you need 60K in retirement and your pension in 40k per year. That leaves 20K times 25 (rule of 25) or 500K that you would need to have invested. Hope this helps, John and Bev

I’m fortunate to have a decent pension along with my 401k, how does that fit into the retirement computation?
That’s awesome. I would look at it a couple ways. Subtract your pension amount from your expected expenses and this new amount will reduce how much you need saved. Another way to look at is a $40,000/ year pension is kind of like having another 1 million in the bank. Hope this helps. Does your pension adjust for inflation? John and Bev

When it comes to investment, diversification is key. That is why I have my interests set on key sectors based on performance and projected growth. They range from the EV sector, renewable energy, Tech, and Health.
To succeed in trading, you must review and consider the dynamics of your trading asset before investing. Analysis based on research is vital

Hope this helps,
John and Bev
This rule is bunk. It makes no provision for income in retirement, be it SS or pensions.
