- A song I wrote for my Father, Kenneth Springs aka "Scat” Springs RIP
Kenneth Wayne Springs was part of a 400m
short hurdles relay track team at Appalachian State that posted a time of 3:42.8 in 1981.
Also, his individual time in the 400m hurdles of 53.01 remains in the top 10 after over four decades.
He was also an amazing singer who sang backup for many stars such as Aretha Franklin, Garth Brooks, Amy Grant, Faith Hill, Michael McDonald, and many more. He had his own amazing soul/funk band called the Scat band and headlined almost weekly in Nashville at Bourban Street Blues and Boogie Bar in Printers Alley, 3rd and Lindsley, BB Kings and several other venues. He was also a comedian and always made everyone laugh.
He suffered a stroke which paralyzed him in 2017. He was unable to walk and in a lot of pain yet stayed strong through it all. We lost him Dec 9th 2021. Though he is VERY missed by many, he's no longer in pain. He's in a better place now. Run your race again, Pops!

I'm a big fan for Kandace and this song came to me completely unexpected and it hit me inside. Was looking for Scat on youtube and this video popped up. What a beautiful song! So sorry for your loss. I didn’t know Scat well. Met him over a couple of days at an event in Nashville in 2007 and was just blown away by his amazing voice and versatility. Nice guy as well. I do remember him mentioning that he had a daughter who was singing and writing her own songs. Don’t recall his exact words but he was obviously very proud of her. Here’s a clip of him rehearsing with the Memphis Boys singing Joe Tex’s ‘I Gotcha’ and Niel Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’. The two songs couldn’t be more different, but Scat sings them both effortlessly.
