  • Another Honda civic rolls into the shop, this time with a misfire complaint under heavy load. We use our knowledge of Honda ignition systems to perform many different tests on this system, from coil current ramping to secondary ignition waveform analysis. Ultimately, we come to a diagnostic decision and make the repair on this vehicle, getting it sailing back down the road. Tests used include...
    Coil current ramping
    Secondary ignition waveform analysis
    Using Honda misfire PIDs to identify a misfiring cylinder
    Swaptronics
    We needed to use a COP adapter in order to get a good secondary capture on this ignition system, as we could not pick up a good signal through the coil's insulation. KY HomeGarage did an excellent video detailing how to make yourself a set. Be sure to check that out here!

    Since you know what cylinder giving PIDs and each cylnder has its own coil pack swap the coil pack and see if misfire follows. If so then that coil pack is the issue. If not, then the wire from the Coil pack to the CPM or possible the CPM has the issue.

    Hi good job on the diagnostic but since you had a clue from the scan tool which cylinder was misfiring you could've just swap coil on cylinder no. 2 to an other cylinder with no misfires then if the problem still persists on the cylinder no. 2 then check the spark plug on that cylinder if the plug looks ok swap the plug with an other cylinder but I do get why you wanted to show what to do on a engine with coil and plugs not easily accessible but if the coils are not easily accessible then the yellow adapter would've not help . Still a good videos.

    Cool one. Looking at those spark plugs I thought it is an oil burner.

  • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
    @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 7 лет назад +4

    Wow that #2 plug looks fantastic! So was the secondary pattern on the scope showing you an OPEN plug, or a SHORTED plug? I had a similar-looking plug after I installed a defective cylinder head on my '89 Mazda MPV. Turned out there was a pinhole in the casting straight from the coolant jacket into the #4 combustion chamber haha

    • @pinpointautomotiverepair1592
      @pinpointautomotiverepair1592  7 лет назад +5

      I believe this was an open plug, not shorted based on it's behavior and the high KV during the event. I think the low demand of light load allowed this plug to still fire across the contaminates, but when combustion chamber pressures increased (effectively increasing secondary resistance) the coil simply no longer had the energy to push spark across the high resistance contaminates. One would expect excessive coil turn off oscillations during this, but what I saw didn't appear quite like ones I've seen on vehicles with open plug wires. One could also argue that the potential energy of the ignition coil firing was completely dumped into these contaminates and there was no energy left to show oscillations. Looking closer at the waveform, the large dip at the end of the spike could in and of itself be a huge violent coil oscillation ringing the secondary. I do see that quite often with open plug wires but the characteristics are somewhat different and more easily recognizable. What sucks even more is that all of that energy had to have went somewhere, and it's likely path to ground was through the coil itself (probably dramatically reducing its life expectancy).

      Hey bud, so as of right now I use a sony handy cam for video, and a zoom h4 recorder with rode's smart lav mic. I'm still learning the ropes on getting good audio and video so this will change as my knowledge/funding allows. Editing separate audio makes it a lot more difficult, but a stand alone audio recorder is pretty much paramount for trying to record in a noisy shop environment.

    My '99 throws a p0303 (cyl 3 misfire) on cold starts only. I can clear it (with my Walmart $40 scanner), drive it for 40 miles and it won't come back (no CEL). Then, maybe a day or two later, upon a cold start (30°F),it'll illuminate instantly. Not the spark plugs. New wires. It's weird. Has 220,000 miles. All cylinders at 140psi (low, but at the minimum for Honda spec).

      Replace the crankshaft position sensor, and if your valve cover gasket is leaking, replace that too; it leaks inside the coil holes as well.

    --- > Interesting that the power /electrical circuits make 90 degree turns to the cylinder heads. Where do the #1 blue-red, yellow-green, white-blue, and brown wires lead to? Is the fuse box under the steering wheel or on the floor to the right? The diagnostics are interesting, thank you, but if it's a secondary ignition coil problem, most people don't have all those tools? The idea of revving the engine in drive while pressing on the brake (the brake boost test) sounds kind of dangerous unless the car is on a lift.. and, possibly, damaging to the brakes and/ or the engine.
    --- > If I'm paying a mechanic by the hour, it seems this would be more costly than just changing out all the coils and, if there is still a problem, changing out all of the spark plugs. Even if the cost is by the job, I wouldn't want to pay for this diagnosis once and then, potentially, three more times. Nevertheless, this was very interesting and worth watching.

    I see this video is pretty old hope to get an answer. The wife has the same car and was having the same issues. I have a basic scan tool and no multimeter. Car had started overheating and had gotten rough idle on start and a CEL for misfire cyl.3 But upon pulling coils the cyl.2 seemed burnt kind of a tan color while the rest were grey. 2 plugs (1&4)seemed normal and 2 were like mega clean (2&3) like they had been overheated I believe that is a sign of.
    I replaced the thermostat and it stopped over heating. It is an old car with only 108k miles so I just decided new coils and plugs. (I replaced plugs little over a year ago but because of the issues I just did it again). First 2 drives out it was great seemed like everything was great but cly.3 misfire came back and I am not sure where else to look. According to the dip stick oil doesnt looking milky, I plan to change the oil later this week to get a better look. Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance!

      It is... I guess it's the same for every competent person in any profession: just when you think it's impossible for someone to screw up worse than what you've just seen, some dipshit steps up to the plate

      This is my exact scenario and I’m worried that’s what happened. I trusted a janky mechanic.. I blew a head gasket and he but the plugs and heads back in himself

    Damn I’d hate to be paying that bill. I understand The reason of doing diagnosis with your high dollar machines, but however only after you exhausted all basic Visual and Hands On trouble shooting. I mean I would not have broke out the machine until I was for sure it wasn’t just a basic tune up. Again it was good info but not at the expense that the customer had to pay. That may have been something you should have shown on your own personal vehicle not a paying customers.

    like how u explain things. very helpful. u may want to refer to your audience as "people" instead of "guys". there are female techs. not really necessary to address the viewers that much anyway. just a suggestion. thanx for the effort
