Bigger than life: (him, but also the horses, lol) lived to almost 60, survived a devastating coal mine cave-in where he had to a cut off his own leg to get out in time. Used a car with a special cane. They just don't make guys like that anymore. Btw, he was conscripted, not everyone volunteered. I was born just before he died and never met him.
