    Man, I was getting so stressed out figuring out how to run everything exactly as the book said while also balancing what my players want to do. But after hearing all of your recommendations on what to change it just clicked! The fact that is you can just change stuff on the fly or just change it to be more interesting immediately lifted a weight off my shoulders. I feel way more confident I'm my first time DMing now!

    I ran this for my two sons. My youngest, who is 8, is a Wizard called Gandalf. While in Gnomengarde he turned blue from the Wild Magic messing around with his spellcasting. He is now known as "Gandalf the Blue". He is well known around Phandalin and instantly recognised now. Your videos are great Bob!

    Great video. About the waterfall. There is a good reason for it to make so much noise. So the gnomes can not hear screams from other rooms! I realized this mid session and conclude this was D&D's version of Alien! Gnomengaurd has a 'crew' that are mostly oblivious to the danger. There are some clues that can lead the party to the mimic but DO NOT have the mimic just attack the party unless discovered. Why? Mimics are intelligent and attack from ambush. Why attack a fully armed adventuring party! Instead, let the mimic remain in disguise unless some one directly interacts with it. THEN after some time has passed have another gnome go missing BUT the mimic has moved on. It can be ANYTHING and it is wandering Gnomengaurd. That should ramp up the paranoia. It did with my group. To bad the other two beginning quest were not as good. Umbrage Hill can easily be a TPK if not handled properly and Dwarven Excavation was down right boring.

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  4 года назад +8

      Great suggestions! I think of the mimic as being able to one-shot the gnomes in this complex, assuming they rely on the "commoner" stat block. A brief, cut-short scream from a room down the hall may create more paranoia than the slow disappearance of their friends! And I agree that Gnomengarde is the most interesting starter quest as-written. Unfortunately it doesn't offer much to the over-arching story :/

    • @Dreigonix
      @Dreigonix 3 года назад +3

      Definitely keeping this in mind when I run this for my second party- I got the distinct feeling that my party was getting bored the first time I ran this quest, so I was afraid to draw it out long enough to play up any actual horror elements.

  • @thomassievert5469
    @thomassievert5469 4 года назад +31

    I really like these suggestions, wish I'd seen this video before we started the quest. Here's what I did that I kind of liked:
    The player managed to trick the king into believing she'd killed the Mimic, so she got her magic item and left. This resulted in the Mimic wiping out the entire community, except for two Gnome adventurers who were out and about. This gave me an opportunity to introduce recurring rival adventurers, who can be said to complete the quests my player doesn't do, and who can show up to help in case things get too hard. They're also looking for whoever tricked their king, so it could be a conflict depending on how things play out. It works out especially well since my player turned into evil wererats from the Mountain-Toe Gold Mine, so she's literally an evil shapeshifter now and the rivals are looking for the evil shapeshifter that ate their people.

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  4 года назад +12

      Thank you! Haha, rivals are the best! I would definitely include some "missing" loot in one adventure, to signify the gnomes having got there first. Hopefully they can settle their differences and face the dragon/orcs together! But it would be interesting if they ended up allying with different sides. Maybe the half-orc shapeshifters will like you PC!

  • @PastorCleveland
    @PastorCleveland 3 года назад +3

    More great ideas! I loved the half-orc Anchorite of Talos / mimic detail. I decided to combine that with the book's idea to make the Mimic a speaking mimic. If the mimic is spoken to it will reply in orcish. If it is persuaded to leave (DC 15 Charisma) it will turn back into an Anchorite of Talos when it leaves, having remembered everything that happened to it. The Anchorite may at a later date confront the party, but it is now able to shapechange into different members of the party - a residual effect of the wild magic.

    As a first-timer DM, I was struggling to keep the players alive on the dwarven excavation, and I am currently thinking how would I handle their encounter with autoloading crossbow and mimic. Your examples in this video really broaden my horizon, not only for this specific map, but in a general DM-ing skill. Again, thank you!

  • @Dreigonix

    I just ran this quest last night- or half of it- and I basically took Facktoré and elevated her to main-character level. She’s a member of the Gnomengarde Inventors’ Guild, and she’s a certifiable genius, but she’s not well-liked there due to her mental instability and obsession with building giant weaponized death machines. She’s very prone to manic episodes and often doesn’t realize what she’s doing, often being a bit _too_ eager to test out her weapons on unsuspecting visitors, but she’s not entirely incapable of rational thought. Personality-wise, she’s kinda like Jinx from League of Legends, obsessed with shooting things, constantly cracking jokes, and often singing her own theme song (Bowser Jr.‘s theme from SMG) during battle. Her room has been expanded to a 50-square-foot boss arena with four pillars for cover, and her stationary crossbow battery has been upgraded to a tank-treaded monstrosity with a reinforced spiked-cage cockpit called the Boltinator DX- Facktoré calls it Bolty and often talks to it like a friend. The Boltinator is basically the conclusion of the “get a magitech weapon from the gnomes” quest, but it’s bound to her specific magical signature, like a magical car key, so we need to take her along. Her endgame is ideally that she decides to set up shop in Phandalin, build a new Boltinator, and use it to defend the town from Cryovain and the invading orcs. And after this campaign, I have plans to play her as a legit Artificer character in other campaigns!

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  3 года назад +1

      That's all awesome! But don't let your love for this character lead to her/boltinator outshining the party against the dragon!

    • @Dreigonix
      @Dreigonix 3 года назад

      @@BobWorldBuilder Yeah- the Boltinator wouldn’t be able to make it to Icespire Hold anyway, or most of the dungeons for that matter, so she’s gonna stay in Phandalin as a defensive force.

    • @Dreigonix
      @Dreigonix 3 года назад +1

      Update! We took out the Mimic, and we ran with it being a malfunctioning Anchorite of Talos- we hauled his body down to Korboz and Gnerkli’s room to show them we’d done the job, and we also looted his claw gauntlets, which I designated as “Talos Katars”, a 1d4+3-damage stabbing weapon, because getting unique weapons is fun. We replaced the Pole of Collapsing with a steampunk-flavored Ring of Cold Resistance that Fibblestib and Dabbledob had managed to put together- an idea that came from another commenter, I believe. The mimic had also just swallowed Facktoré after she had run away from us- we actually found the mimic by using Detect Magic from the Gnomengarde Spellbook to find what turned out to be her inside it- and now that we accidentally saved her, she’s gonna follow the party back to Phandalin where the GIG is no longer liable for her. XD

    • @BobWorldBuilder

      If they’re experienced players, they’ll do okay with Gnomengarde. Short rests between some encounters should be fine, but I recommend relocating Umbrage Hill on the way to Gnomengarde. Maybe they’ll engage with it and level up before they get to the gnomes!

    I ran this last night. My players skipped the whole right side of the map by climbing the ridge to the gnome barracks area, and knocking on the door there. After getting directed to the kings by the inventors, they busted down the king's door, and their wizard put both kings to sleep. They found the mimic in the treasure room, beat it up and the bard tamed it with Suggestion. They killed it when I had it turn into a half-orc anchorite after they left the vicinity of the gnome caves. Our half-orc barbarian wanted a mimic pet. In our game we encountered the guard in the crossbow room and succesfully intimidated him with a nat 20 and then we chased him. I went into the mushroom wine storage room and thought: "Maybe he is hiding in one of the barrels". Following my reasoning I thunderwaved the entire room revealing the mimic through sheer luck. We got all the magic items and we even stole their spellbook. The bard and I used a mixture of illusion magic and the spell sleep to get out by jumping into the river from the balcony. I'd call that a success

    Thank you, another excellent video!
    Question: if by leaving the caverns the half-orc anchorite of Talos would free itself from the effects of the wild magic (and so being able to return to its true humanoid form), why did it not do it earlier? Did the magic also affect its reasoning?

    We finished session last night with the party killing the Mimic who transformed into the half-orc Anchorite. Would it carry a symbol of Talos on it?

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  4 года назад +9

      Awesome! Yes, that’s a great idea! I don’t think their equipment says anything about it, but I would have them carry/wear a holy symbol. Maybe a boar tusk with lightning bolt carvings ⚡️

    • @Dreigonix
      @Dreigonix 3 года назад +1

      I saw the official art had them wearing a distinctive boar-tusk necklace, and I had my players make a Religion check to identify the necklace as one worn by Anchorites of Talos.

    Both the spinning blades and mimic nearly tpk'd the party - I had to have the gnomes come "save" them several times. I think the layout of this quest, makes goes against the potential that the narrative has. Why do we only learn about the mad king and the shapechanger, at the end of the dungeon crawl?

    • @BobWorldBuilder

      I think I recommend what I did for my session: have an NPC gnome meet them almost immediately and briefly explain the dangers here

    I'm literally playing this tomorrow, and this area seems to be the most intimidating out of the three starter quests. It's my first DM session so that's probably messing with me a little, would I need to have a physical map drawn or would it be best to verbally explain the area to them?

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  4 года назад +3

      Having a map to show is usually more helpful for everyone, and some DMs prefer to hide parts of the map until the players explore them. If you bought the box set, you can use the D&D Beyond code to access a player version of the map and print it out. That said, depending how long your session lasts, the party may spend most of it exploring Phandalin or going to Umbrage Hill, because that location is kind of on the way to Gnomengarde (and Dwarven Excavation). Starting a new campaign is always exciting and a little nerve-wracking. Just remember you're all there to have fun :)

    My player persuaded a bunch of gnomes to fight with him because his persuasion is really high. It ended up with more than 10 people fighting. The mimic was only able to kill one gnome and was absolutely destroyed by everyone else.

      In my first handful of videos (like 1-10), I remember removing a harsh one, but I haven't had to worry about it since. Either RUclips is great at filtering the bullies, or this community is just as genuinely kind as I believe it is :)

    If a player wants to be a gnome rogue will there be any problems or benefits with this quest? Gnome wasn't a race choice in the booklet but she already knew what she wanted to play.

    My players and I started this quest last night after completing Umbridge hill and levels BG up to second level.They are about 3 rooms in.If this is better as the third quest do you think we should quit this quest and do the Dwarven excavations one?

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  4 года назад

      Not at all! Go with what your group wants to do. Both Dwarven Excavation and Gnomengarde are meant to be playable from levels 1-3, but check out the guides for help making adjustments if you think they need it :)
