Really quite nice..The thing with air cooled motors is they take quite a while to warm up.. which includes the carburetor warming up. My drill for starting an engine of this type is to kick it through 2 or 3 times.. choke ON.. but throttle closed.. just to prime the engine. Then one swift kick should start it.. ( assuming the idle speed and mixture are set correctly). Then the choke has to be adjusted to keep it running depending on the air and engine temperature.. gradually reducing the choke over a period of 30 seconds to a couple of minutes.. depending on the above factors, Once the thing is warm.. one can get the idle speed and idle mixture set optimally. It is a fad to set for ultra low idle.. but this makes it hard to keep it running when stone cold..and also compromises the splash lubrication. On crude carbs if you have set the Main jet ( high speed T handle ) for max speed when hot.. it may be a tad lean when cold.. or it may not. Every engine is a bit different.. if you have to make it richer when cold.. you will have to make it leaner when hot.. for it to really fun it';s best. I am asuuming this engine has been running too rich or with too cold a plug.. or with very warn rings.. since I see a lot of carbon coming out the exhaust onto the ground. A good mixture in a healthy engine, with the right heat range plug, will give you a chocolate brown insulator on the plug. My first bike was a 48.. like this.. and I had a basket case earlier version, which must have been just like your 46. Thumbs up for boat tails !

the original set up is a glass settling bowl with a needle valve shut off, under the tank.

I had some of these parts in boxes, when I had my 48 as a kid.. and really didn't know what they were.. but now that I see the generator belt tightening set up.. I do. We are talking about waiting from age 12 to age 71 for that little tid bit !

I had one back in the mid 50's I remember that to accelerate the throttle was turned in the clock wise direction much much safer than motorcycle and scooters today. I you were going to fall off the throttle went to low motor

what I had when I was 12. nice and original.. ooh you have the generator too ! you need to learn how the main jet and idle jet work. you adjust the main jet warm, while running down the road at top speed.. lots of fun. my cold starting drill.. gas open, choke on, kick through easily 3 times. 4th time with vigor it should start right up if the idle jet is adjusted right. once everything is all perfect.. it might start with only 2 kick throughs.

You up in Michigan Clyde? I was just wondering, because I have a few Clyde’s in my family and they did live in Michigan, haven’t seen any of them in forever! My Dad was “June “...

At 2:00 minutes it shows you revving the engine, the twist throttle is backwards from my 58 Eagle as well as any other motorcycle I have ever seen. I have seen videos of other Cushman's the same age as yours and the throttle worked in the standard direction. Did you change yours or was there some specific reason it is opposite to normal direction.

That was standard. I have a 47 that my Dad bought new& has never been modified that is the same way

One thing is really odd, I started looking at videos of those older models and saw examples that some worked one way, others the opposite direction, you would think they would always work the same direction.

The reverse throttle is standard. Some people reverse the twist to make it "normal". It's a pain in the ass if you're not used to how a Cushman rides.
