Making a Custom Maple Burl Bushcraft knife

  • Published on Mar 6, 2026
  • In this video I show the full process of making a bushcraft style knife. The handle is a beautiful piece of stabilized maple burl that almost looks like marble. On the 26C3 steel blade I used the Japanese technique of claying the blade to make a visible hamon. I add a custom bonfire mosaic pin that is made out of copper, aluminum, brass and carbon fiber. The build documents the full process from shaping the steel, grinding the bevels, heat treating, handle glue up, shaping and finally sharpening. If you are just starting out you can learn a lot from the processes I show in the video.
In my upcoming video I will also show how I made the leather sheath. So consider subscribing so you do not miss it.
This knife is currently available on my website.

A real work of functional art.
    Thanks.
    Well done sir👍👍💪🏻🔪🫡
Would you have a tutorial on scale installation (to include belt grits etc.)?

Thanks. I shape the scales on the grinder with a 60 grit belt and refine with 220 grit. After I sand it by hand with 220 grit, apply tung oil and hand sand up to 2000 grit and then buff.

    Hello,
I couldn't resist and just bought the knife.😀
I think the price is fair, and communication with Nejc was quick and easy.
I'm looking forward to testing it.
    Now I'm impatient!😉

The overall finish is one of the coolest i've ever seen! The hamon is gorgeous! Would be so proud to take and show it to everyone in a restaurant (for example)how much will you sell it?and would the hamon be more black with a san maï?

    • @HelixKnives
      @HelixKnives  13 days ago

Thank you. The san mai "hamon" is actually the result of a sandwich construction of steels, the darkest being the middle layer. A hamon like mine is the result of the heat treating process and is a "reaction" that occurs inside the steel. This one has been sold, but if you are interested in something similar I can make one for you. Check out my custom order page www.helixknives.com/customorder

Le tengo manía a la jente que no utiliza guantes de cuero, para protegerse

Using gloves can sometimes be more harmful, because the glove can get caught or pulled into the machine.
