you guys got quite a bit spot on for can’t control myself but just to put it down into a timeline sort of:
black haired taeyeon is the character, blonde haired taeyeon the actress. she falls in love with her costar on set/is already in a relationship with him and during the runtime of the play, their relationship deteriorates. he keeps leaving her after seemingly emotional yet one sided fights, she’s emotionally invested and being messed up by their relationship, yet he doesn’t seem to be affected at all and just ends up leaving everytime. despite that, they continue putting on a front for the characters on stage, which works out at first. then, assumably, he breaks up with her or they just reach their final boiling point - the character taeyeon takes off the wig, becomes the emotionally overwhelmed actress taeyeon whose birthday is being celebrated - and the man doesn’t care. maybe they’re in a secret relationship or maybe this is just that final signifier that he truly doesn’t give a crap about her. then, the scene with the paparazzi, who are clearly taking advantage of her vulnerable state, seeking to take profit from it, exploiting her unhappiness… all while the man stands by uselessly watching, getting off scot free. this has been interpreted as a metaphor for how kpop relationships often go- with the men escaping relatively unharmed while the female idols get hounded by death threats every day. either way, at this point she can’t take it anymore. her carefully assembled and kept together stage character falls apart, she’s on stage confronting and screaming… all to the applause and amusement of the unfeeling crowd. and even though she’s on the stage clearly at the end of her wits, the man is still smiling at the audience, gesturing at her as if she’s an amusing part of the play, disregarding her entirely. they throw roses at her performance, the thorns leave behind bloody marks all over her, a final physical reminder of the hell her life has been during this play/relationship. she smiles as the curtains close- this part of her life is now finally over. then, we come to the ending scene that circles back to the beginning scene. she drops the ring he assumably gave her, cuts herself free from him, washes off the tears and the blood left behind by this farce… as far as it seems, she’s finally free from everything.
