Hey, I've had the BX135 mounted cross bed under a Retrax tonneau cover for over a year now in my Tacoma, and it very quickly started to disappoint. The top lid has actually warped (I believe from the sun and heat, I'm in Hawaii), and the hardware is rusting. Not deal breakers for me, as it's just an added layer of locked security for camera gear, but would make me hesitant to purchase any more. I've had a lot of Pelican cases over the years and frequently use the Air series for travel, but this line is definitely built different.
I have several large and small Pelican surplus military shipping cases. Large ones are 38"x27"x16". Not cheap even surplus. They stay strapped on the cargo carrier on top of my Hummer. Airtight. Water tight. And tough! Smaller ones great for optics, electronics, and NV devices. Large ones I usually have two for foam sleep pads, inflatable pads, pillows, blankets, sleeping bags. One for cook gear/freeze dried food. And misc. light weight camp/bug out gear. I keep them secure with custom security cables and pad locks. Great setup for light weight bulky gear.
Thanks for that comparison. I've been wondering about that so I really do appreciate you taking the time to demo that. Those cargos will work nicely on my current project now that i can visualize the size difference.
Great to see a review on the box that's been thru snow, salt etc... will be interesting to see how they hold up in the long run. (metal latches especially) Have been using Pelican products in photo/video world for 20+ years now, one comment I have though it seems everyone is now over engineering the latches/mounts very complicated and busy designs. Pelican will always be a good go to though and great for mobility otherwise I can't find a better solution than my Thule Motion XT (L) for camping purposes (although I may get dinged a few points on not so tactical looking)
Yes just what I was talking about. An integral mounting system that requires NO drilling that might comprise the weather tight integrity. So simple. One “pays” the price point of a Pelican Case for the weather tight feature and the durability of construction that makes them the tank of the case world.
It definitely helps to see the cargo cases next to other pelican cases I am more familiar with. Congratulations on the baby! Unsolicited advice: I really recommend Taking Cara Babies infant sleep courses! It really helped my wife and I know how to set the little one up for success.
Thanks for the comparisons Mike! Stoked for your baby on the way and the future baby outdoor gear reviews! Just had a baby boy too so I’m here for it! 🙌🏼
Went over to look at pelican cases there website and found a few I could use . I do wildlife photography stuff and I have several Camera Bags but always looking at ways to keep em dry when out or possibly travel time . Not Bad on prices found that they are reasonably priced. And along with a few others . Thanks for the video . Oh yea and Gun cases .... Safe travels Adventures etc ....
I've had the BX140R for awhile now. My biggest issue is that for the price, they need to come with struts like the Roam cases. Mine is constantly falling down on me and trying to take my fingers off. They need to at least sell a strut option for them. Anxious to see what struts you end up with. The other issue that kinda irritated me is I bought the first-gen mounts and I've had several issues with them, including having to bend mine to get them to close. I also have to use tiny TSA locks cause that's the only thing that would fit. I don't feel safe not putting those locks on cause I'm afraid it will open while I'm driving. I want the new mounts, but they're so expensive it's crazy to have to buy them again. They should offer an upgrade to those who bought the first-gen mounts and got burned.
Not sure you would see this, but since you work with pelican occasionally… I’d like a “rifle” height case with some sloped ends for a bit more aerodynamics. I have a rifle case and it just creates so much drag. I just want something to fit a bit of recovery gear.
Well Mike the real issue is Pelican cases are weather tight (thus being 1 of the 2 main reasons to spend so much $ on them). Drilling holes to mount while is easy and can be properly sealed does simply destroy the weather tight integrity of a very expensive case… hence why alot of ppl don’t like to do this. For the price point (well deserved) they should be engineered with a mounting system so drilling and comprising the product isn’t required/necessary. Pre drilled, threaded fasteners molded into the case would be simple enough design feature to implement.
I been on the fence of getting the BX55S but looks like a good option for me thank you , also I just got a newborn , I recommend getting a Doona car seat , carrying a stroller is a pain lol 😂
where did you acquire this newborn from? I may or may not be in the market. Jokes aside, the doona is a neat stroller/car seat combo. does both well but not great at either.
Lol 😂 and yeah my doona should be coming in the mail soon , kinda worried to see how it works in the Tacoma 😂🤦🏻♂️ the car seat I have fits well but the stroller takes a lot of the space in the bed of the truck 🤦🏻♂️
I'm a bit torn between the Pelican BX90R and the ROAM 105L. I won't be mounting them anywhere, but just storing them in the back of my Jeep Wrangler JL. I'm wondering if the ROAM case holds more Doritos than the Pelican? 🤣🤣🤣
"You and me baby, we ain't nothing but mammals, so let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel!" So, two BX140Rs on the Prinsu, and there is nothing going inbetween them on the rack, yeah? I have a CVT, so probably going to put solar on the rack that it comes with, but I am wondering if there is enough room for two of the bigbois up there, for them both to open... Those would work well for extra bedding and/or recovery gear. Although I get nervous having heavy metal things on my roof. More than any other reason is because I am a klutz. Soft pillows are much better to drop than a 20lb snatch block from overhead hahaha. Edit: Helps if I watch the whole thing before opening my big mouth, lol. You've been doing this for a while. So long, in fact, you know a number of the questions your viewers are likely to ask, haha. Thanks Mike. You friggin rock, man. Edit 2: What if you mounted them side to side, as opposed to front to back? Awkward, I know. Probably be a pain in the ass to open too. But... I wonder...
Unless you're mounting it on a submarine, or intend to fully submerge it under water (neither of which would apply to a case on a land vehicle, then you won't need waterproof.
I have had the 135 since they were released and personally wouldn't trust it to be completely waterproof. I'm in Hawaii, so perhaps more sun than most but the top lid of mine has warped (presumably from the sun/heat exposure) a bit. The hardware is also rusting. Mine lives under a hard tonneau cover so it's not the end of the world for me, but it's worth mentioning.
@@LastLineOfDefense Going out and doing trails, real trails. Seriously. Lately, even when you get out you leave in the afternoon, drive a gravel road, eat, sleep and head back in the morning. Boring! LLOD that beard game is coming on strong! Glad you stuck with it!
I'm a huge pelican lover. I have been purchasing pelican since 2000'. I also love the vault brand for many reasons.
Air case up top is great, but you should check out the cargo BX85S if you want a long case up top that has that extra depth.
Great review - thanks!
I have those First Lite fingerless merino gloves. They are the bomb! Love those Pelican cases!

Same here strapped to the ARS jeep rack locked with cables

I just got a diesel heater in the mail today and I’m gonna try to integrate it into a hard case 👍🏼
Thank you been waiting for a good pelican case review 👍🏽 good luck with the house still watching , and happy holidays brotha!
Same to you!
Excellent comparison to pick the right one. Love the Pelican cases. Thanks

I think this option more than the big pointy shaped containers most others use

Hey Mike can get a link for the gloves? Always looking for a good solution there as well. Beard on Brother! Off to a good start!
Here ya go! amzn.to/3PfYuZ2
@Last Line Of Defense Thanks Mike!
I have 3 1770 cases , have you ever mounted one to a roof ?
Curious if you have found a good strut for these? Just ordered a BX135, and think that might be a good change.

The Pelican BX140R Cargo Case does not come with a Rubber Weather Seal, it has plastic molded lips that is the actual top part of the case, correct?
60 bags of Doritos! I'm all in! LoL
Is the pelican bx140r reasonably waterproof?
Did i miss when you switched from FR back to the Prinsu rack? What was the reason for that change?

What about wind noise.
Thanks for your time.
Love the Doritos chest idea! 😂👍
Perfect time to flex your beard
Nice beard bro! 💪🏻☦️
Mike, do you think two of the 140R’s will fit on the sequoia?

The beards looking nice man
Still following the beard ;-) looks great and in a month or 2 it will be even better :D
It'd be great if they offered cargo brackets to retrofit other boxes.
These are not waterproof but weather resistant correct? Seems kind of backwards to not make a cargo case waterproof??
Unless you're mounting it on a submarine, or intend to fully submerge it under water (neither of which would apply to a case on a land vehicle, then you won't need waterproof.
@@LastLineOfDefense aren't their regular line of cases waterproof? Why not add it here too?
When do we get a baby update?
Look at that beard !
Thanks for the love, Mike! I guess the only remaining question to be answered is... how many bags of Doritos can fit in a BX140 Cargo Case?
"Like they do on the Discovery channel" LOL.
DORITO PARTY!!!!
Are they waterproof water resistant???
That's what I was hopping to find out in this video, website says weather resistant which if true completely ruins this product

The beard is looking a lot better. Looks like it is starting to fill in a bit. You probably still disagree.
Who came from the beard dude
20 minutes talking about a box. Lmao.
I get it, he’s sponsored by them. But I wish he’d upload more “real” videos like back in the day. So it goes….
Been doing gear reviews since the very start of my channel, haha. Bags, boxes, etc - this is as "back in the day" as it gets.
@@LastLineOfDefense do your thing brother. Just my 2 cents. You’re the reason I bought a Tacoma lol
Oh I don't mind people's opinions, I just have no idea what it means, haha. "Back in the day" refers to what kind of videos?
