The timer in the dualit has a clutch in it so there is no worry about damaging it, everything is replaceable as well, I was given my grandparents dualit they got as a wedding gift and it’s still working all these years later
nope. it's because that is the side with the trip switch, so there always needs to be something in that side. hence if you're only doing one slice you need to do it in that slot.
Thanks - I enjoyed your review very much. I had a Dualit for many years, and it had thick and thin sections, so accommodated bagels better. Also, and this is a big thing for me, when the heating element eventually failed I was able to buy and install a new element cheaply and easily myself. I now have a beautiful looking DeLonghi that has a partially broken element. The spare part costs more than a new toaster, which is ridiculous. I think all new appliances should come with a 'how fixable?' rating. That would certainly encourage buying much more sustainable products, instead of disposable ones.
I've tested and used a lot of toasters, the perfect toaster does not exist, and that's disturbing considering how primitive it is compared to a smart phone, I really don't understand why engineers just can't come up with a decent design!
We have 3 kids and used to go through toasters every year. Unfortunately, most are not fixable so was trowing out and buying new frequently. Then, looked online for a fixable toaster and found the Dualit. Decided to pay the price and I don't regret it. 3.5 years in , had to change the timer (and yes, I think you are breaking it when cancelling, don't care what the manual says) but at least, a relatively cheap fix and the toaster still runs perfect!
I have the 4 slice Dualit toaster having owned numerous toasters in the past this is by far the best simple easy to use, fast and consistent I can also do toasties Well worth the extra money and will last a life time as you can repair it yourself very cheaply
I bought a used Dualit on eBay, I thought I could not justify the price tag for a new unit here in Canada (close to $400 with taxes) for a toaster. The bagel function is used quite often so I was happy to see they now had models with that function and it had been long enough that some people wanted to sell theirs on eBay. I was not expecting the metal to be this thick, the shiny metal is sheet metal, but the rest is cast aluminium, I disassembled everything and gave it a good wash and it looked brand new. I really appreciate the "Peek & Pop" function, I thought it was a bit stupid that it did not go up when it's done, but now that I am used to it, everytime I make toast elsewhere I am definitely missing it.
Apparently, that Breville is supposed to toast one side less than the other. It is called the 'sandwich' feature for when you would not want the inside bread as dark as the outside.
@BruiserFL OMG, it's the consumer - I want it toasty here though not brown toasty, tannish toasty. smh -- I say that because yeah, back when instant mashed potatoes came out, lol I don't think we ever had baked potatoes again. Low income, hardworking mom, still..
My parents have 2 Sunbeam toasters that were given to them as wedding gifts back in the late 50s. They are both still working and going strong. I love the deco design and the way the toast comes up when it is ready. That being said, I am considering the SMEG just because it has that same retro design and SMEG appliances are quality appliances (full disclosure, I’ve never owned a SMEG). If you have to have an appliance out on your counter, I say go with SMEG.
I love all Smeg products for their vintage look however, they are way over priced so I refuse to buy them. I have a refrigerator that looks exactly like Smeg, but a different company for a fraction of the price.
Your review is hilarious! Loved the Cuisinart review..."it's not hideous"! I'm sure that was a comment by at least one of my girlfriend's moms about me..."Well dear, at least he's not hideous." Great review! 😊
I'm not buying a toaster that says SMEG on the side, not to mention it flings toast onto the floor. How does something like that get through the design phase and into production? Good grief.
@edwinamendelssohn5129 well, if you were shopping for a toaster i hope by now you have one that fits your needs and didn't cost a fortune. My main thing with toasters & reviews is mentioning if the out side of the toaster gets hot! I'm 75 years old and do not remember ever getting burnt by our toaster. Also, stainless steel is a pain. Everything's going digital, ugh.
Thank you so much. Frustrating to shop for a toaster these days. Sick of constantly replacing. A basic toaster that works is all that anyone really wants. Hard to find. Think I’ll go for your favorite, the handmade one from GB. Hoping for Longevity …we will see. Again, thank you!
You sentenced Breville by choosing the long-slices model. No long-slice model can compare with standard 2-slice models when it comes to evenness and consistency, and we can't really know how the Breville compares with Dualit and SMEG from watching this otherwise interesting, and nice, review.
Obviously how brown an item will be toasted will depend on how wide the item is and therefore how close to the toasting filament that item is. I think that the only way to get by this would be to have some type of distance sensor which was linked to the filament that adjusted how much heat was being put out by the filament depending on size. I guess that this would add cost to the toaster price.
by design they toast unevenly because the have outside vertical element and inside grid. thay had the vertically mounted to accomodate the radiant thermostat, that model in the video seems to be a t20b, a bit later that went out with the t-40-1 and t-35-1 with bigger outside element wich were 100w more powerfull
Just FYI, the Sunbeam says "one slice" because you need to put one slice in the side with that wording so it trips the switch. If you're making two, you put the other one in first and then the second piece in the "one slice" slot.
You can’t rely on Amazon reviews. Companies have been known to hire rating farms that rate their products 5&4 with a description. Although my reviews were civil but accurate of my experiences I was banned. The banning has happened to a lot of people. My Breville died after 7 years of reliable toasting. I purchased based on the 5 star rating on Amazon. It was not a 5 start product because it toasted exactly as shown on this excellent video.
The title of your review caught my eye as I was just toaster shopping. I didn’t get a whole lot from this review, because style seemed to be your only criteria. Style is important, but I would have liked to have seen- toast size (can thick bagels fit), overall dimension, price, and value for money.
Everyone I know who buys a Dualit ends up getting rid of it. The Dualit takes way too long to toast toast !!! Ugh... the Sunbeam is, by far, the best toaster. All metal parts on the inside too. Sunbeam has to remake and refine their toaster for the bagel crowd. It's a masterpiece.
Regarding the Sunbeam and bagels: when it was made in the '60's I think that you could only get bagels in New York City...and I guess that some people would say that you STILL can only get (authentic) bagels in NYC.
We use our sunbeam vista any time we need toast or warm bread. Love it and got it at an antique store for $18! Frozen bread cooks just as perfectly as room temp bread without changing darkness setting. Only problem is the fore stated bagel (also the old wires)
What use are all the gadgets like led lights, lift up function etc....if the toaster does not do the job you want it to do, which is toast a couple of slices of bread evenly! It's 2023 you would think some manufacturers would make one by now! Really fed up with all of them
"I think if you have no soul, this would be the perfect toaster" LMAO! This is one of the best reviews of anything I have ever seen on youtube! Please consider doing some more reviews. I'm subscribing just based on this comment!
But the speed. We have a 120 volt toaster that makes decently even toast, but it is horribly slow. Do you think only 220 to 240 volt toasters do the job quickly?
I got the dash toaster before watching this review and I agree it is weak but I just pull the lever again ha. I always tend to want to start toasting sooner than everything else is done so it’s okay if it sometimes needs an extra round of toasting. It looks cute on my counter, will fit my homemade sourdough slices, and it wasn’t painfully expensive since I’m not sure how long I’ll be this into toast ha. I was just tired of using my oven broiler.
You didn't use the Breville four slice toaster correctly. Simply lower the slice if bread, move the LED lever beyond the 50% mark. The 70% mark gives you an even browning on both sides. A few trials will break you in to its quality. Not interested in toasting bagels. For the price, Inthink it's worth it.
We had one of those Sunbeam toasters for my entire childhood and more - it worked flawlessly for nearly 35 years! Most recent was that green Smeg - it's not great at covering the entire slice, the internal mechanism is fragile and it's incredibly difficult to clean stuff out of the bottom. If a piece breaks off some bread that's larger than a crumb it will get wedged in the bottom and not removable via the very shallow crumb tray. PRactically needed to dismantle the unit to properly clean it up. Not recommended.
The Sunbeam is the only one that will go UP in value, and last for decades. Plus it has a timeless design (also make a great talking point, if you are interested in design and engineering) Down side is they are not so safe in terms of electrical insulation and the shell heats up a fair bit too. Personally I don't toast bagels so I can't see myself ever needing to buy another toaster in my lifetime.
Not paying $300 for a simple function like toasting. That’s just nuts! I stick to a simple GE $40 toaster that can do 80% of a $300 toaster. It’s only toast!

After less than 4 years mine has a timer problem. It gets stuck and keeps on toasting… I read a lot of Dualit toasters have that problem. British quality?
The timer in the dualit has a clutch in it so there is no worry about damaging it, everything is replaceable as well, I was given my grandparents dualit they got as a wedding gift and it’s still working all these years later
"One slice" is for when toasting only one slice, otherwise the toast will overcook on the other side.
nope. it's because that is the side with the trip switch, so there always needs to be something in that side. hence if you're only doing one slice you need to do it in that slot.

Wow, thanks for sharing that info about the delonghi, its also why I like the dualit. I do agree on the "how fixable" as well. Consumer reports.
I've tested and used a lot of toasters, the perfect toaster does not exist, and that's disturbing considering how primitive it is compared to a smart phone, I really don't understand why engineers just can't come up with a decent design!
Thanks for your honest feedback on all these. I ended up getting the Smeg in the long 4 slice versions, and it's awesome
I found a working 4-slice dualit at Goodwill for $10. Big score.
Holy butter! That is an extremely good score.
I’m glad I read your comment! Now I’m going to start at my local thrift shops to look for a new toaster.
American Goodwill is unbeatable

Does it toast the entire slice? The toasters I have/had don’t fully go inside so there’s always a quarter left un-toasted…
I bought a used Dualit on eBay, I thought I could not justify the price tag for a new unit here in Canada (close to $400 with taxes) for a toaster. The Sunbeam retailed for $22.50 back when it first came out. That's more than $260 today.
Apparently, that Breville is supposed to toast one side less than the other. It is called the 'sandwich' feature for when you would not want the inside bread as dark as the outside.
It's unfortunate that they don't advertise that anywhere!

Great reviews.
I think its made by the Spoog company...
But maybe I'll buy it BECAUSE of the name...you know, to get the reaction of friends and family.

great chemistry, great video and great choices! thank you
The original toaster had a walk-through method. That was our family toaster throughout my childhood. Worked great
have Smeg's products (two slice toaster a, drip coffee maker and milk frother), yes I really lovin it, my next purchase will be kettle, lol,
Toasters are an essential part of any kitchen- they can make all kinds of delicious goodies from toast to bagels and beyond!
What else do you put in your toaster? Besides toast and bagels?
You sentenced Breville by choosing the long-slices model. No long-slice model can compare with standard 2-slice models when it comes to evenness and consistency, and we can't really know how the Breville compares with Dualit and SMEG from watching this otherwise interesting, and nice, review.
Sunbeam was the shizzle back in the day! It was "space age"...if you consider the space age to be the 1960's. Glad you included it.
That sunbeam toaster looks like it wants to go on an adventure with a vacuum, a lamp, and an electric blanket
Obviously how brown an item will be toasted will depend on how wide the item is and therefore how close to the toasting filament that item is. ONE SLICE, means - if you want to toast one slice, you have to use that slot. The radiant detector is in that slot.
I suppose the 70-yr-old Sunbeam might have benefited from New Elements! & Toasted evenly..
by design they toast unevenly because the have outside vertical element and inside grid. thay had the vertically mounted to accomodate the radiant thermostat, that model in the video seems to be a t20b, a bit later that went out with the t-40-1 and t-35-1 with bigger outside element wich were 100w more powerfull

Oddly the grill marks on the $250 toaster no longer bothered them and neither did launching the toast on the counter. Funny how that works.
