- You don’t need a mechanical ascender or prusik tender for safe one-handed tether/lineman operation. Ditch the gadgets without spending any more $$. This blew my mind when I first saw it!
UPDATE: Due to the comments posted (we're always learning & growing, that's why we watch youtube videos right?!?) I have changed my knots to double fisherman's. The lineman in the video is stock from XOP, so I clearly am not the only one who was running it like this. Plus every other stock rope I've had in the past came from the factory overhand knot in the prusik SO...??? Here's to safer climbing!

Great job. My 2 cents on this, I would tie a double fisherman's knot at the end of the prusik. The fisherman’s knot will handle the stress of a fall better. Otherwise great video.
Actually just re-tied my prusiks today based on that same advice from someone else 👍🏼. Always learning & tweaking!

The only thing I would add to the video is make sure that you don’t have much slack in your knot, because if your knot goes through the carabiner then when you let go it’s gonna work in reverse all the way down the tree lol

Hey man what ropes are you using? This trick works great for my lineman belt because I don’t put much weight on it, but with my tether when I put all my weight into it the prussick gets too tight to tend one handed.
That was 5 minutes of my life well spent. Going to give that a try. Thank you!!
Lot of comments about termination which should be offset so biner doesn’t rest on knot regardless of type
@Jeremy Byng nice video; good tip, and well produced. Based on how well those prusik loops slid on your main lines, I'ld say that you found an optimal pairing for rope sizes. That said, talking about your safety here, I couldn't really tell how those prusik loops were terminated -> if those were overhand knots to close them off, then that's a clear no-go; those need to be a figure-8, or a double fishermans. The issue with an overhand knot is that they tend to roll, and it looks like you have less than an inch of tail after that knot [ scared the hell out of me, for your sake ]. If I were you, I would address those immediately.
Secondly, your tending method should NOT be attempted with a screw-gate carabiner; and really should be done on the spine-side of the carabiner to avoid accidentally opening the gate.

@@jerbyng also as someone who professionally and recreationally uses ropes (arborist and rock climber) I strongly suggest giving yourself a longer tail on the end of your prusik knot. it looks very short on camera, knots will work themselves a little bit loose over time and usage so leaving at least an inch or two of tail will save your life. just looking out for ya bud, happy hunting!
exactly. Prusik ends have to be joined with double fisherman knots.
@@andrecharlebois705 that’s what I was taught. I’ve seen lots of JRB videos and he’s very safe with years of experience and he recommends a hunters bend. It’s a whole lot easier to tie and untie to adjust or what not but very secure. Probably 5 seconds once you get hang of it. I’ve used the hunters bend on probably about 30 climbs now and always inspect carefully and they don’t budge. Of course I still leave a few inches.

Am a arborist and I can tell you that’s a good way to f up your carabiner that your putting your life on spend the 15 bucks and get the right gear don’t by a cheap ass with your life line and if you watch this thinking about it don’t do you Ben warned by a professional climbing don’t do it

try a kleimherst prusik sometime . it doesn't get stuck as standard prusiks can .

You might want to rethink the knots you are using with the prusik. Research the double fishermans knot for prusiks. Its a certified life safety knot. Also, research arborist techniques as you are climbing a tree and not a pole. Any goof can climb a pole LOL.....

Good video! Your tail on your knots should be 4x the diameter of your rope as a rule. I see you’re double tied in but I imagine there’s a time when you aren’t!

Your prussik should be smaller diameter cord than what it is used around in order for it to work. You risk it failing in a fall if it's the same as your rope. Stay safe.

What termination knots are you using on your prusiks? Is it just an overhand knot? A double fisherman's or hunters bend is generally preferred.

Paracord prusik on your tether?? Never seen anyone do that
it's actually a 6mm prusik on an 11mm rope. The angle makes it looks smaller than it is. But you can read through some comments and see what I've changed since shooting this. Using different/safer ropes and knots now, but the concept still works great.
How much rope do I need to tie the prusik note on the tehrd? And what size rope are you using?
If you read a bunch of the comments on the video you’ll find lots of advice on knots. This is the prusik that came with the XOP saddle setup and I have since changed both of them to a different prusik and tied them with double fisherman’s knots instead of the unsafe overhand knots it came with.
I am now using 10mm tether with an 8mm prusik, and a 8mm lineman’s with a 6mm prusik.
You really should tie a bend instead of a knot for connecting the prusik cords. Those knots could roll.

@@jerbyng Oh, yeah. I saw. But, most people recommended a fisherman's. The knot you're using would be just fine if it was tied as a bend instead of a regular knot. Same structure, different way to tie it. Look up Canyons and Crags with Rich Carlson. It's very informative.
Glad I didn't buy a ropeman. First I found out I could use a simple loop. Now I see you don't even need that. I'll have to test the biner method first to see how smooth it is. I know the loop method is pretty smooth. Either way the prusik is cheaper, safer and quieter than a mechanical device.

Well i could show you a similar version still available on Amazon. BUT if you read through the comment section you'll see some good advice on why not to use these. I have taken that advice and switched to the Tethrd screw gate version. Big thing is you want a locking screw gate (NOT auto lock) so that it can't accidentally turn and flip open on you. Black Diamond has some that are very affordable. This probably what I'd go with now off Amazon. a.co/d/7zbY5BS

Look into a valdotain tress tended with a small pulley. It's much easier and won't jam like a regular prussik. It's very popular with arborist and canyoneer people. Also known as a VT
He could get him a Rope Runner Pro or better yet a Ronin Lift Power Ascender.
@@kurtdussander4944 the rope runner pro is awesome! I've used it and it kicks ass. The power ascender really eats ropes. A small pulley and VT would only be $40-50 and I've used that system for years in trees and it's always easy to adjust and safety rated. Everything being tested and rated is worth the money if your climbing high enough that a fall could kill you. Just my 2 cents
@@kevingeary1472 I’ve never used the power ascender,, it’s about $4000.00 . You are right about the rope runner pro though, it’s an amazing device for working in a tree. Arborist gear has came a very long way from where I started using knots to swing around in a tree while wearing the most uncomfortable belt n spikes imaginable. Setting a rope to walk up was unheard of then and you just spiked up the tree. Your safety lanyard better be adjusted on the ground because they were nearly impossible to do anything with once you got up in the tree.

Look on jrb tree climbing and saddle hunting, jrb soft bridge mode, or jrb non jamming variant, they are self tending ascending hitch, and works better then a prusik

good idea, but try with a michoacan or a machard friction hitches, with the two ears into the carabiner, the rope allways goes on the midle / hugs for you man

Overhand knots on the prusik are a big no go... Double Fisherman if you must use a knot. A sewn loop is ideal.

Please retie and reposition the knot in your prusik. Also on your linesman, your prusik should be a smaller diameter rope than your main line. Showing folks how to do something, as you are clearly doing things in an unsafe manner is borderline negligence.

Keep safe out there folks. Look up stationary rope systems for climbing trees. The stitch hitch would be better all you need is a ring. Low and slow on new gear and techniques. Just my opinion 🙂. Happy hunting.🙂🪓

What kind of ropes are you running here?
A 10.5mm from amazon for the tether and the stock XOP ropes that came with the saddle/platform. My guess is they’re 8-9mm?
Anyway to show the double fisherman knot. I am using my old Trophyline saddle but upgrading to a rope tether and deciding whether to use the ropeman 1 or the prussic.

I use the ropeman on a carabeiner below my prusic on a carabeiner and i use my linemans rope as a backup bridge

Hey man you got the xop saddle? If so do you like it? Got one for myself so far so good.
Yes! Good eye. I got a great deal on the harness and platform. I cut off basically all the fall restraint pieces and tweaked a few things. Made a belt out of the shoulder straps by adding a buckle. Works just like a saddle now!
@@jerbyng yeah I cut the fall arrest too and left the shoulders own just easier to hold up the saddle. I dont care for the ropes and carabiners that it came with but it's not bad in my limited experience.
