Getting too old for this 😆! Sometimes you just have to hold on with all you have . “From breakdown often comes breakthrough “ and here is exactly what happens. This semi wild cob mare is a serial Bolter when leading through gates to turn her out . She was convinced she would get loose and save the day but thankfully she didn’t and boy was she in a better place half an hour later . Our shop: steve-young-ho...

WELL DONE! That moment when she suddenly stopped her tizzy and gave you both eyes with that WTF??? look on her face had me LOL... I'm amazed by how calm you are, never taking it personal. Tanya must have been a wreck watching that! This horse has a much better future because of you. Good on you, Steve!

This is one of the most fantastic/effective things I've seen you do! My little mother once did something similar but no where near as much as this. Our welsh, Cindy, decided that rearing up with us on her back was fun. (we rode bareback) So, my mother set her feet when Cindy put me off and somehow threw her over on to her back! That pony never did that again. I am so happy you were there to help that horse. ❤

I had been given a shetland pony to work with that had a habit of taking off while lunging. This happened constantly, so one time I figured I'll place the line behind my back so when he'd make his moves, I could just lean back on the line. He reared and fell flat on his back, he was astonished about the fact I dared to outsmart him 😄 Didn't do it again ever and his attitude in general changed aswell! Ponies are such little shits sometimes.

Brings back memories of holding onto my 8mos old filly while she pulled back, panicked and fell onto dirt. 24 yrs ago we didn't have access to the internet like now but after raising 3 children, I instinctually felt I could not let her think that behavior would let her "get away." It proved to be a very pivotal time in her training as well as mine. I remained calm, she got up and her whole demeanor changed. She was ready to follow my lead.

I was dragged through muddy puddles, across a stony yard and onto the road. I didn't let go and the horse never did it again! Holding on to a horse like that when they are pulling away is a good way to get leg and/or ankle bones snapped into multiple pieces. I know that because it happened to me - resulting in a shattered leg bone and a compound ankle fracture. Now granted, it was a young Belgian Draft mare. I was out riding when a herd of cows started to approach and she got real nervous. Knowing that taking a tumble from a draft horse is a really big fall, I decided to dismount and walk her out of the field. You would think that worst case scenario is that you would just be pulled off your feet if a horse pulls back hard enough, but that pulling force can be so strong and swift that your bones snap before you're pulled off you feet. If a Quarter horse can pull away and break a nylon tether tied to tree (which I have seen) they can certainly certainly your bones apart.

True, but very often you just cant hold on, that is why the wrapped rope is a bad idea, you may be on your tummy minus one arm. "Act up".. like they always do it to be mean?

@Goldenhawk583 no, by "act up" I mean to react reflexively to run away from pressure, which they can interpret as danger. Our job is to teach them, through controlled exposure, that pressure isn't a threat. And yes, the first thing my father taught me was to *never* ever wrap the rope or lead shank around your hand!!

I get the impression that you have not seen much of Steves work. He said he had started groundwork, and it shows. At some point though, the horse has to face its fear and actually do what it has been afraid of.
