Those LDMOS are sensible to input power. You must take care not to overshoot them. I own the same amplifier (version 2, as I think the displayed one is also), and I have tortured it with long high power digital transmission time and sometimes bad antennas for a couple of years and never got a problem. Nice to know how to adjust the BIAS... just in case.

Hi George, are you replacing the LDMOS? If you are, can you let me know how you were using the amp when it popped? Thanks and 73 Eric

@@erics.8340 Hello Eric, yes of course. A friend was using FT8 on my Kenwood TS-990 which is an extremely destructive mode on any amp, it's a weak signal mode. Had I known he was going to use The FT8 mode I would have stopped him but in this hobby anything can happen. Be careful who you let DX with your equipment. It's all in fun, I'm just happy I was able to repair it. Best 73 OM de George, W2GSS

I been looking at this amp and the RF2K-S for over a year I take it this amp was not under warranty and what cost saving did the owner save by you doing the repair vis the manufacture. Great job BTW

Thanks, I would never buy a SPE, one main reason is when they fail, there is no schematics to repair them for owners. The design is weak, in the PA section on the 1.3k and the 1.5k, amps and the LDMOS is rated way to close the operational listed amps output. I only use my 1.3kw at max CW PWR at about 850watts and on FT8 about 750watts. The LDMOS chips are only a few hundred watts above the rated SPE limits, and those are based on lab testing by the LDMOS manufacturer if you look up the chip spec it says only rated with a CW signal. At least the 2k MOSFETS are rated better, and the heat energy is divided up amount more devices, I think 6 MOSFETS. SPE knows they have the PWR ratings way to close, and they updated firmware after years of units in the world to now not allow high duty cycles like FT8 on the HI PWR setting. SPE just marketed a new AMP, but only in EU so far. In these newly designed amps, they designed the PA with dual (2 LDMOS) chips, to allow a greater max rating of the PA. Based on this schematic issue, owners are almost always forced to send the amp to a repair center, unless it is a failure of the LDMOS, which this video shows the procedure to repair the amp.

I never understood how a fully automatic with built-in antenna tuner can blow a transistor!
