Hi. I've been working with these sensors for awhile. QuiteI've tried the hy-srf05, hc-sr04, urm34 v4, LvMaxEZ, (different topic, rcwl-0516, and a pir). All of these I've been able to use picaxe. And all have limited distance. (

In the lower price segment, this sensor has the best range - about 3 Meters / 10 feet. I've also tested the Sharp IR sensor - about 0.40 Meter / 1 feet. And a laser distance sensor ToF - about 1.2 Meters / 4 feet.
Well, I guess you'll get the best results from the radar distance sensors, like those in high class cars. A quick search and I found some of them as spare parts. But they costs more than 300€. And I'm not sure if you can make the µC to operate it.

nenioc187 yeah, I was thinking radar, but haven't found any that reach out far enough. The ones I've tried are on/off like pir's. Not helpful for my purpose. Thanks though. Someday technology will catch up to crazy minds.

Try the US-100, it goes up to 4.5 m not quite the 5 m you want but close
I am trying to find a digital output-distance sensor for PixRacer, but there is only the 180 dollars Lidar Lite :(
Arduino is just not an option for flight controller.
