Of course court should be on the list. She won 24 grand slam titles more than any player. She won 11 grand slams since the tour became pro. She also won the colander grand in 1970 in the pro level
Since this is about female tennis players and not just female singles tennis players, I'd easily put Martina at the top. Her singles and doubles records are head and shoulders above everyone. And she had to compete with Chris throughout practically her entire career. With that, I would have Chris at #2. Had she not played WTT and avoided the AO during the 70's, she could be at 22 or 23 Grand Slam victories. Not taking anything away from Graf or Serena but for me, both of their accomplishments are asterisked. Graf "benefited" from Seles' attack. Serena focused a lot on the majors and not as much on the year-round tournaments. Chris played over 400 more matches in total than Serena and Martina played 600 more matches. Serena's total tournament wins is 73 while Chris is 157 and Martina is 167. This is just my opinion. So don't @ me. LOL
Arguably, no one comes close to Graf in her prime! Just looking at the top players of her era that she managed to stay on top of: Evert, Navratilova, Capriati, Hingis, Sanchez, Sabatini, Seles. I'll give you Serena for the one reason, that apart from Graf, no other player has been able to stay on top for that long. Shame, that they never met while both in their prime. Serena played 10 more years than Graff and the only record she holds over Graff is 23 grand slams to 22 ! Graff holds all other records!! I think theses two should be reversed.Serena ended up number 1 in only 5 times in a 27 year period. Graff ended up number 1 8 times in a 17 year career!! Statistically Graff was a much better player.
Steffi Graf has a better record than Serena. Granted Serena has one more slam than Steffi, but in terms of shorter career span, win%, all-court success (Steffi was better on Clay than Serena 6 FO vs 2), calendar golden slam, no of consecutive weeks at #1, # of year-end #1s, Steffi was more dominant than Serena. Recency bias should not lead us to look at stats and all-court success. And also adding doubles record to this evaluation is not fair game either. If we would consider doubles records, Navratilova beats everyone, no question! To add more, the evaluation must also be done only Open-era records to be absolutely fair. Critics who discredit Graf's achievements because of Seles' stabbing should know that Steffi won 5 slams in Seles' absence be 93-95. After Seles' return to the tour the records must be looked at as 'fair-game'. That puts Graf at 17 slams at least and won't take away most of her other achievements.
