It's what I call "The Kingambit Theorem". You get rewarded for playing badly, or at least bailed out. Last Respects and Revival Blessing mons work on the same principle.
0:50 I really like how the showdown description for Tera Shift simply states the transform condition as: "If Terapagos." Nothing else. Just checks if Terapagos. Is Terapagos? Yes? Then transform. In the case where Terapagos isn't, then it doesn't transform.
The Terapagos knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is, it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the Terapagos from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the Terapagos will be at the position where it wasn't. In the event that the position where the Terapagos was is now the position that it isn't, the system has acquired a variation. The variation being the difference between where the Terapagos is and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it, too, may be corrected by the GEA. However, the Terapagos must also know where it was. The Terapagos guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the Terapagos has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice versa. By differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

Hello, it would be lovely for you to discuss the new Paradox form of Terrakion, Iron Shoulder. It looks very interesting with it's high attack + speed and signature move being able to hit through protect.
I love this design gameplay wise. I'm a sucker when it comes to normal types going brrrrr, so even if this is clearly ubers lv this might be my favourite kind of design to use. I hope it isn't overtuned too much for the meta
I'm unsure if the Jimothy Cool fandom should have positive feelings toward Terapagos. After all, it is the one that's indirectly responsible for bringing Iron Mugulis to our timeline.
Apparently the people up top decided that it counts as the user Terastallizing. And since they'ven't decided on what to do with Terastallization just yet, they won't lay a finger on the matter and forced it up to Ubers instead. Also, that'd count as a complex ban, which the Showdown Staff don't like doing unless absolutely necessary.
@@GoinGreninja I mean, Terapagos _does_ enter its Stellar form by Terastalizing, and they try to keep consistency with the actual cart. Terapagos in the actual game cannot become Stellar Form without Terastalizing (and it CANNOT have a Tera Type that isn't Stellar, so Tera-ing into a different type is not possible), so effectively such a clause would read "Terapagos cannot Terastalize."
I actually tested what you mentioned about neutralizing gas cancelling the transformation. No matter what we did neutralizing gas didnt do anything so that base form seems to have no use for battle as i cant think of a way to stop its transformation.
I mean someone mentioned that it would theoretically have an effect if hazards are up, since the base form has lower hp than it’s terastal form so hazards would do lower damage
@@cosmoniums5990 I havent tested it but its Baby-Form has 90 Base HP and its second form has 95. However it only transforms after being switched in. So since rocks and spikes do percantage based damage they will do less total damage to the baby form than the second form.
@@yoshimeier3060 but when it turns into its second form, does it "gain" all that extra hp, or is it set to the same percentage but just with a higher base hp? its hp would still go up, but thatd have no effect on the amount it took from hazards.
Is it? It isn't that strong unless the boost from stellar is at least 1.5 for terapagos. Still strong, no doubt, as it really threatens tera mons and switch ins with starstorm, but it is kinda balanced compared to koraidon at least as of now.
Honestly I thought terapagos was pretty underwhelming. like I knew it would get banned and pretty fast, but I figured people thinking it would be the next calyrex or pre nerf Zacian were just straight up wrong. then again I didn't think ogerpon would be that good so I guess I don't have the best track record. edit: I didn't actually know about tera starstorm or how stellar type worked. now that I do I definitely see why its probs high tier (even in ubers), I still don't think its like the greatest mon to ever exist tho.
Tera Shield is better Multiscale even if you're not hit by multiple hit moves. Multiscale on a supereffective move reduces by 100% the damage. Tera Shield on a supereffective moves reduces the damage from 2x to 0.5x, thus the reduction Is of 150%.
There are situations where Multiscale is better, at least in a vacuum. Tera Shield doesn't protect you from any damage from an already resisted move, but that technically doesn't matter for Terapagos because it's normal type (unless it affects ghost moves?) Also Multiscale works with weakness policy, but Tera Shield doesn't, and Tera Shield can be bypassed with Tinted Lens, but Multiscale can't.
@@Milesprowerthegamer tinted lens isnt really om any pokemon thats ever gonna threaten turtle. And in more situations tera shell is just better than multiscale because of the blanket not very effective for those hits. Both abilities are limited by their users too.
Yup, being a signature ability, its pokemon can't be neglected. You do have a point regarding Weakness Policy, but still, having a Multiscale on a 1 weakness 1 Immunity Pokemon plus a better Multiscale on Super effective moves is quite a thing.
This is a really cool and powerful Pokémon that unfortunate will suffer the same way that ultra necrozma has faced beyond Gen 7. This new legend may keep its Tera shell to transform once, but if terra isn’t kept in the next Gen, it may lose out on its stellar form. It may still be great without that form, but it’s just seems like this new form is a product of terra that may not be kept for future gens.
Also isn’t this Pokémon just flat out the best Pokémon raids now? Since it’s terra star storm/blast will be super effective against terra Pokémon, it may be a key choice to use in raids.
Is Tera Starstorm also super effective with Stellar type? Stellar Tera Blast is, but it lowers both attacks by 1, so you'd need Calm Mind to make up for it.
I know right. But it' is more broken than Zygarde-Complete with that absurd bulk and click-to-win Tera Starstorm after Stellar Tera. Although in Ubers, we have Ting-Lu and Koraidon who can deal with it as well as Ho-Oh to sponge a hit at least once, but then again, that is just speculation.
I don’t remember this being said specifically in the video (correct me if I’m wrong) and I don’t think the game itself explains this perfectly so just a quick clarification for anyone confused, when using stellar tera your one boosted move per type does keep the boost permanently just wanted to put that out there because it confused me at first
Honestly I love Terastalization and the Stellar type. I think it's the best medium between Megas, Z-Moves, and Dynamax. Can't wait for it to be removed next gen!
... But why? I don't see the point of designing Uber strength Pokemon that aren't intentionally overpowered for a final boss situation. Also a little worried about another type. If they're just releasing a bunch of overpowered Pokemon with no counters, all they're doing is flooring it on power creep and they'll just have to keep coming up with the next biggest thing to fix problems they're creating for themselves with the last biggest thing they released.
So what I'm getting from this is that Stellar is like a longer-lasting but less potent version of the Charge/Focus status from the Shin Megami Tensei games, combined with that game's Almighty element; While SMT's Charge/Focus provides a 2.5× base damage buff it only lasts for one attack regardless of element (Charge for Phys, Focus for Magic respectively). Stellar meanwhile only has a boost of 1.2× to 2× depending on move type, but Stellar lasts until every unique elemental damage in that Pokemon's movepool has been used at least once with one boost per type.
Quick note, Terapagos in its forms are all immune to Ability suppression and cant be copied or swapped. So there is no way for baby form Terapagos to exist on the field for longer than the switch in.
Tera shell is also better in that it nullifies the effect of weaknesses for that first hit. On the normal type terapagos this just means that fighting type attacks do half damage instead of doing neutral damage like they would with multiscale (base * 2* 1/2 = base vs. base * 1/2 = base/2). However, on a Pokémon with more or more significant weaknesses, like Dragonite, this is a much bigger deal. Ice type attacks still do double damage to Dragonite through multiscale (base * 4 * 1/2 = 2base) but with tera shell Dragonite would RESIST the ice type move, having it do 4 TIMES less damage than with multiscale, in addition to halving damage from its rock, fairy and dragon weaknesses compared to multiscale. Imagine this on a Pokémon like Volcarona , you don’t have to worry about getting burned anymore, but now your rock move does 8 TIMES less damage and unlike with tera there isn’t anything to predict, no matter what you click, if it isn’t something that would do 200% neutrally it isn’t going to kill. Next turn they got their game winning boost, but you dealt with the ability, maybe you have priority or a choice scarfer to chip it down. The problem? NOW you have to worry about the tera.
Stuff like the main two cover legendaries, absolutely, but Terapagos is really about where I think it should be for something that's supposed to be on cover-legendary level and not just Zapdos-level or something. It's kind of telling that some people actually thought it wouldn't be even this good at first.

love that terapagos got booted to ubers before it even got a proper sprite on showdown
Your manual inclusion of art for terapagos may make this the highest production value terapagos showdown video on RUclips.
I love this design gameplay wise. I'm a sucker when it comes to normal types going brrrrr, so even if this is clearly ubers lv this might be my favourite kind of design to use. I hope it isn't overtuned too much for the meta
Watch it become borderline unusable once Legends Z-A comes out
Im pretty sure terapagos ability isnt affected by weezings gas.
I'm unsure if the Jimothy Cool fandom should have positive feelings toward Terapagos. After all, it is the one that's indirectly responsible for bringing Iron Mugulis to our timeline.
A new great Rapid Spinner for Ubers? Rip Ribombee
the fact that it gets a weather shut off and two of the best ubers rn are the primal forms this is amazing
Love the effort to edit Terapagos onto the empty PNG
I’m a slaking lover so I’d recognize those stats anywhere.
What makes it funnier is the fact that Old Money has the same stats as Slaking, yet is in Untiered.
I thought for sure Terapagos would have a clause that prevents it from becoming the Stellar form in OU.
@@Hyperneosonic97 True. But such a thing was never done, so it's what it is.
1:04 Form changing abilities are immune to neutralizing gas
I'm becoming suspicious..... whatever happened to iron Mugulis, it's been a while now and it seems to peaceful here
"Tera blast stellar has the drawback of lowering the pokemons attack and special attack stats, which can be abused bu-" 😏
Terastorm does not do that to Terapagus😏
@@Divinityxm It has to be overpowered somehow. And it kinda does make sense since it's the originator of the Terastal Phenomenon.
@@Divinityxm I meant that I was going to use serperior to abuse this "downside"
@@jamesgiles4517 Yep. I wonder if it's gonna be one of the first starters this generation that's going to UbersUU.
7:24 the diddy kong racing music is much appreciated
I actually tested what you mentioned about neutralizing gas cancelling the transformation. No matter what we did neutralizing gas didnt do anything so that base form seems to have no use for battle as i cant think of a way to stop its transformation.
I mean someone mentioned that it would theoretically have an effect if hazards are up, since the base form has lower hp than it’s terastal form so hazards would do lower damage
It's fun how without it's tera that thing is basically dundunsparce
I sometimes complain about power creep, but I'm so happy this thing is as busted as it is.
Aw, love that Ogrepon reaction! It’s so cute!
This is Stellar.
Actually the small form makes it so, that if hazards are up it takes less damage.
How so?
@@cosmoniums5990 I havent tested it but its Baby-Form has 90 Base HP and its second form has 95. However it only transforms after being switched in.
So since rocks and spikes do percantage based damage they will do less total damage to the baby form than the second form.
@@yoshimeier3060 if that’s true that’s kind of neat honestly
@@yoshimeier3060 but when it turns into its second form, does it "gain" all that extra hp, or is it set to the same percentage but just with a higher base hp?
its hp would still go up, but thatd have no effect on the amount it took from hazards.
@@vincentcircharo8259 Havent tested it.
Terapagos is the mega rayquaza of gen 9
Is it? It isn't that strong unless the boost from stellar is at least 1.5 for terapagos. Still strong, no doubt, as it really threatens tera mons and switch ins with starstorm, but it is kinda balanced compared to koraidon at least as of now.
0:58~1:04 No, not even then. Neutralizing Gas doesn't affect Tera Shift.
Imagine if Terapagos had shell smash
If Terapagos got Shell Smash it would go straight to AG.
Let’s relax lol
Let’s NOT imagine shell smash terapagos
Shhh do not give Game Freak ideas LOL
Balanced Hackmons is gonna ban that idea extremely fast!
This thing has somehow gotten banned faster than Regileki
Hey jim, great video. was wondering when we are gunna get a mon review on longest neck?
Methinks “Iron Fish” should be the singing bass on grandpa’s mantlepiece
Tera Shield doesn't protect you from any damage from an already resisted move, but that technically doesn't matter for Terapagos because it's normal type (unless it affects ghost moves?)
Also Multiscale works with weakness policy, but Tera Shield doesn't, and Tera Shield can be bypassed with Tinted Lens, but Multiscale can't.
@@benjamink4071 heads up your comment was posted 4 times
@@bluekirby_64 yes, and it doesn't lower your stats when used against a stellar type
Thanks for letting me know. Probably RUclips being weird.
Terapagos literally combines Mega Evolution, Z Moves, and Zygarde's gimmicks.
It's going to go to AG very soon.
I doubt it would be that broken in Ubers
OH MY GOD I ACTUALLY PREDICTED A COSMIC SORT OF TYPE??
I remember drawing up a "Cosmic" type in a notebook long ago, before Gen 8
The amount of times that damn blissey died in an unfortunate way 😂
I don’t remember this being said specifically in the video (correct me if I’m wrong) and I don’t think the game itself explains this perfectly so just a quick clarification for anyone confused, when using stellar tera your one boosted move per type does keep the boost permanently
just wanted to put that out there because it confused me at first
Stellar type: What if gems came back but you didn't need to hold it?
Honestly I love Terastalization and the Stellar type. I think it's the best medium between Megas, Z-Moves, and Dynamax. Can't wait for it to be removed next gen!
defenitly a ubers mon. probably a realy good one in vgc to.
I appreciate the terapagos png fix
Bro got banned before he even got a sprite. Can't have shit in Detroit smh
Lol
Terrapagos feels like an RBY single-stage normal type.
Imagine Shedinja getting the Stellar Teratype
GameFreak has officially given up on pretending it knows how to balance its roster.
I think this just saved the game for me. A actual solid defense.
So what I'm getting from this is that Stellar is like a longer-lasting but less potent version of the Charge/Focus status from the Shin Megami Tensei games, combined with that game's Almighty element;
While SMT's Charge/Focus provides a 2.5× base damage buff it only lasts for one attack regardless of element (Charge for Phys, Focus for Magic respectively). Stellar meanwhile only has a boost of 1.2× to 2× depending on move type, but Stellar lasts until every unique elemental damage in that Pokemon's movepool has been used at least once with one boost per type.
genuinely i was more excited for this video about terapagos than the dlc itself
oh god stellar type BH mons are gonna be absurd
The legendaries this generation are just like….wtf power creep which is crazy considering last gen was the same
Stuff like the main two cover legendaries, absolutely, but Terapagos is really about where I think it should be for something that's supposed to be on cover-legendary level and not just Zapdos-level or something.
It's kind of telling that some people actually thought it wouldn't be even this good at first.
Tera Shift is immune to Neutralizing Gas, if i remember correctly.
That Turtle truly is unstoppable.
@@jimothycoolIndeed. It truly does deserve the new Ubers placement. I wonder why it wasn't there from the start...I know it's not a box legendary, but the stats and the movepool should've told folks that it's too strong to be here.
I love hearing the appreciation for Donkey Kong Country music in these videos, very refreshing
I think this mon is pretty cool. Curious to see what it does in ubers.
Jimothy casually blasting the absolute BANGER known as Gnome Village
Objectively one of the coolest Pokemon ever created
1:03 shouldn't happen at least according to leaks tera shift was supposed to be immune to it
It is. He misspoke.
This is absolutely beautiful. A very powerful legendary, and it's mechanics are baked in lore.
the funniest part about stellar tera type is that a grand total of 3 mons are good with it in OU and it's garbage for basically everyone else. the other two being serp and enamorus who can spam the damn thing as soon as anything faster is taken out.
