- The Sargent Swing Bridge has carried motorists over the Intracoastal Waterway for 45 years. It is about to be demolished. Sargent is a small village along the Texas Gulf Coast and has long been a weekend destination for inlanders across the state, as well as home to a few hundred permanent residents. Access to Sargent beach from the mainland is provided by a swing bridge, one of many that once dotted the coastal landscape of Texas. Today, there are only two swing bridges left in the state, this one is about to be demolished. Let’s look at the history of this bridge, and why over the last half century nearly all of the state’s swing and draw bridges have been replaced.

I live in Sargent have been there most of my life. Sargent was known as Texas best keep secret. But the big money is moving in and Sargent like a lot of small beach side towns it’s becoming not as nice as it used to be they buy up the land just to make more money by sale it for 4 times the given price. Forcing out the little man who built the town. Occupied now by a lot of nort eastern people and big city people from Houston and Dallas. The trash on our beach has gotten out of hand and theft has gone way up. The city people use our town as a place to part and trash with no respect for our what was once a wonderful e.
Once again Scott, thank you for your investment of time and $ so we can enjoy and learn. Well done
I have not been to Sargent since before Hurricane Ike! I didn't know they had plans to replace that little, rickety bridge, which I have crossed over dozens of times. The new bridge looks tall and kind of scary, but it only makes sense to put in something like that for the barge traffic.
Your videos are very well done and much appreciated. I love the history of these old towns and structures.
I appreciate it!
Since we moved to Galveston, we haven't been to Sargent. I'll have to go see this new bridge.
I’m confused. There are not one but two operable swing bridges in Bridge City, TX (Cow Bayou Bridge on TX87 and E Roundbunch Swing Bridge.) So there are more than just two.
He didnt do his research I was just about to say the same thing lol
Thanks.

Very interesting ! I'm glad I'll get to see it before it's gone.
The only such bridge I recall was the one at High Island.
I know that swing bridge well!

We still have a similar type bridge over the ship channel in Houston. It opens for ships to pass through just like this one

That is a pontoon bridge not a swing bridge. I have gone through it many times with barges in tow.
Yup.. I was just thinking this. It floats, and literally chugs back and forth. I remember the engines revving up as a kid in the 90's
it has a swing arm permanently attached to land that "swings" the bridge back and forth like a door.
@@Alex-je6od odd cause it has no engines...
