Consider Lucius effectively buying Malfoy the position of Slytherin seaker - that means there's at least one and probably more aspiring seakers in Slytherin house who got upstaged by some swagering snot-nosed little brat who's dad happened to be richer than theirs. @BjornV1994 3 года назад +210

I think Hagrid's comment of "all bad wizards came from Slytherin" is more an expression of his own bias and hatred towards the house, after what happened to him. It was their prefect that framed him for a murder and caused him to be expelled. And seeing how Hagrid was on first name terms with Tom, I do believe at the time Hagrid was pretty close to him, despite coming from a different house... Such a betrayal does leave scars.
With Crouch Jr., I do find it likely that he was a Ravenclaw, rather than Slytherin, due to his high emphasis on intelligence and his general lack of ambition. He wants to serve Voldemort but there is little to nothing hinting that he does so out of belief for the Pure-Blood Cause or for a particular role of power in the group. He sees in Voldemort a kindred spirit, with similar backgrounds and he only wants the approval of his master...
And with Dumbledore, I would argue he never abandoned his attitude of: for the greater good. Dumbledore still does some very questionable things through his life, sacrifice people and prepare others to make sacrifices. He still operates on the tenants for the Greater Good, going even so far of sacrificing his own life "for the Greater Good". The Wizarding community has just been fortunate that the Greater Good has been redefined to conserve the Wizarding world as it is and stop Dark Lords as Grindelwald and Voldemort... Dumbledore isn't an evil character but certainly a dark one with a lot of grey shades in his moral system.

Basically, Dumbledore was complimenting Snape for his bravery. I wouldn't consider Dumbledore evil tho. He never killed anyone, not intentionally, as his sister died because of a duel between him and Grindelwald. It's true that he wanted to rule among the Muggles, but it's also true that when he was young his world was different. Muggles were considered inferior because they didn't have any power, while wizards and witches, especially if powerful, were thought to be superior as they could teach or "guide" muggles and everyone else. If I have to judge Dumbledore with a world I would say he was a fool. And he knew that, he even said that to Harry.

Of course, James made a number of bad decisions and mistakes with Snape, but none of them of the magnitude of Snape's colossal mistake to become a death eater. So ironic that by revealing the prophecy to Voldemort, he started the chain of events that would lead to the death of Lily Potter. But just like Snape redeems himself after that, so did James, Dumbledore and many others (Regulus Black, Draco). The real bad ones never really choose good (Voldemort, Bellatrix, Lockheart, Barty Crouch Junior, Greyback, Umbridge).

Some people always blame circumstances... the truth is our choices are what determines who we are and not the circumstances in our lives. Eventually Snape realized that. He relized his mistake and wanted to atone for inadvertently having caused the death of the only person he loved.

Good catch on young Dumbledore. I think that'd make a facinating What If story. What if Ariana hadn't died, would Dumbledore have joined Grindlewald? Ultimately, I think Grindlewald's measures would've driven Dumbledore off naturally and events would progress as they did in our own timeline, however several years delayed. Perhaps Dumbledore is absent from Hogwarts when a young Tom Riddle attended leading to a dramaticly faster rise to power. Or the Dumbledore tempered Grindlewald takes even longer to break and has to deal with a young upstart challenger before even putting his plans into full motion. Or the pair team up with the ministry to defeat Voldemort only to overthrow it from the inside.
    Interesting ideas...

Dumbledore would have tried to talk Grindelwald down at first but once he realized that wasn't going to work he would a stop to Grindelwald and his plans. The only reason this didn't happen when Ariana died was because they were only in the planning stages of their scheme. I don't think Dumbledore ever thought Grindelwald would carry out their plan alone.

I agree. Dumbledore had a good moral compass and a very intelligent mind. He may have been charmed by Grindevald for a while, but if not the death of Ariana, another death or injury would have been the "wake up call". A good argument could be made that Dumbledore NEVER became good but was always trying to control everything, including the wizarding world - without getting his hands obviously dirty most of the time. He blackmailed other wizards, such as Snape, into doing his bidding.
    From the Deathly Hollows book:
Dumbledore opened his eyes. Snape looked horrified.
“You have kept him alive so that he can die at the right moment?”
“Don’t be shocked, Severus. How many men and women have you watched die?”
“Lately, only those whom I could not save,” said Snape. He stood up. “You have used me.”
    “Meaning?”
“I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter’s son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter -”
Dumbledore is stealth evil embodied, making sure others wind up in Azkaban - because those who have evidence that would put him there are those who he has power to put into Azkaban himself.

  • @jamesbluntirules

Okay, so just a quick point - Hagrid's statement (which Ron made in the movie) never implied ALL Slytherins were bad. It doesn't say "Right, you're sorted into Slytherin at 11 years old - you're destined to turn to the Dark Arts. There's no hope of you taking a good path." It is simply a statement that Slytherin is renowned for producing Dark wizards and that any wizard who ever went bad was in Slytherin. The statement was made in the context of Hagrid explaining the different school houses to Harry after his first meeting with Malfoy in the robes shop. Hagrid says "Everyone says Hufflepuffs are a bunch of duffers but -" he never gets to finish that sentence because Harry cuts him off and says "I bet I'm in Hufflepuff." Hagrid then explains "Better Hufflepuff than Slytherin," and then makes the statement in question.
The statement is of course a fallacy and wrong as this video proves. Even at this stage of the story before we find out about Peter Pettigrew (Gryffindor), Hagrid knows it to be false - he believes at this point in the story (although we don't find out until the 3rd book) that Sirius betrayed Lily and James to Voldemort (and if we concede that he didn't know about the Secret Keeper arrangement, he still believes that Sirius murdered Pettigrew and 12 muggles. He knows Sirius was in Gryffindor and best friends with James, Lily, Remus and Peter). So a pretty strange statement to make.
On a side-note, I think I know why Slytherin is so adept at producing Dark wizards. First is the blood purity attitude of the house - now, simply because Salazar Slytherin was a blood purist and prized blood purity in his students, that doesn't mean you had to be a card carrying member of the pureblood supremacy club to enter the club. It also didn't mean you had to be a pureblood. It's implied in the last book that there are very rare instances where muggleborns are placed in Slytherin. Scabior, one of the snatchers that captures the trio and takes them to Malfoy Manor says "You don't find many mudblood Slytherins." The letter 'M' in front of the word 'any' is telling here. But even being a pureblood supremacists doesn't mean you'll automatically take the Voldemort/Death Eater route - Narcissa was never a marked Death Eater, but believed in blood purity. None of the Blacks except Regulus were Death Eaters, but quite clearly believed in blood purity as demonstrated by Sirius's mother's portrait. So whilst not everyone who holds blood supremacist views turns "bad", it is still one of the triggers. I think it is more to do with the values of the different houses.
    Gryffindor - Brave, nerve, chivalry.
Bravery and nerve are more often than not used for standing up against injustice. More often than not, they are attributes used for good. However, it can occasionally be used for bad. Example - German soldiers in WWII who genuinely believed in the Nazi cause would be the HP equivalents of non-marked supporters of Voldemort who still fought in battle for Voldemort (like Greyback). You couldn't consider them "good" because they sincerely and genuinely believed in a cause that resulted in a genocide. But to put their life on the line in battle for that belief takes bravery and nerve.
Ravenclaw - intelligence, learning, wisdom and wit. These can be used both ways and it depends on the values of the person outside of these. These are more "ability" based values rather than "choices" based values like Gryffindor's. So as Dumbledore says "It is not our abilities that show what we truly are, it is our choices." We see most use their intelligence and wisdom for good, but you get the odd narcissist like Lockhart who uses their intelligence (in his case of memory charms) for malicious purposes.
Hufflepuff - hard work, patience, justice and loyalty. These are choices based values and are the least likely to be used in a bad way. This makes Hufflepuff the least likely to turn out a dark wizard. An iconic Hufflepuff line which is one of my favourite lines of the series which stems from the loyalty and justice values is "What if we want to stay and fight?!" from Ernie Macmillan when McGonagall is organising the evacuation of the castle before the battle of Hogwarts. McGonagall has said nothing at this point about over-age students being allowed to stay. So Ernie, out of a sense of loyalty to Harry, to Dumbledore's Army, to Dumbledore and a sense of justice takes it upon himself to ask, quite forcefully, about students who choose to being allowed to stay and fight against the injustice that Voldemort was perpetrating.
Slytherin - ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness.
These are values that can be used both ways like the other houses, but are the most easily adaptable for malicious purposes. They can certainly be used for good. Ambitious can simply mean having the attitude that if you shoot for the moon, you'll land somewhere among the stars. That can be used in relation to academics and it can be used in relation to the sort of career you want. But we also see this value in Umbridge (who was in Slytherin). She wanted power and she was prepared to do whatever it took to get it - including persecuting innocent people and killing 2 15 year old child (at the time that she sent the dementors after Harry and Dudley to Kiss them, she did not know that Harry could produce a patronus. She didn't want to just expel Harry, she wanted to permanently silence him). We also see this in Percy who was prepared to turn his back on his family for power. Cunning can also be used for good - going outside of Harry Potter, we see this on display in Matilda where she is cunning enough to come up with and execute a plan to get rid of the Truchbull who was terrorising the school. As well as being able to get back at her father. Leadership can be used for good and bad. Voldemort is an example of it being used for bad, whereas Harry is an example of it being used for good. Resourcefulness can also be used for good and bad, but it is very useful when used for bad. We see it used for good when the Trio is on the run, but we see it used for bad when the Trio is captured and Bellatrix is resourceful enough to use her knife when she had no wand to threaten to slit Harmione throat to stop the boys duelling.
So overall I think it comes down to values. But Slytherin is not inherently evil.

the quote from Hagrid "there's not a single witch/wizard who went bad who wasn't from Slytherin" is often misinterpreted to mean that all Slytherins are bad, but what he actually meant was that all Dark wizards came from Slytherin. however we know that even this statement isn't true, because of Wormtail being a Gryffindor. but to be fair to Hagrid, at the time he made that quote most of the wizarding world thought Wormtail was a good person (and was dead), but even if we take this into account his statement still isn't true because Sirius (who everyone thought was bad at the time) was also a Gryffindor.
either way, there is a theory out there that Hagrid was specifically instructed to tell Harry that, not because it was true, but to dissuade Harry from wanting to be Sorted into Slytherin himself. apparently it was all part of an elaborate plan Dumbledore had for Harry which started as soon as he survived Voldemort's attempt to kill him when he was 1yo.

No matter how many people will tell me Quirrel is evil, I think he is just like Queenie or dare I say, Snape (in his position on the Good/Evil spectrum). Same thing with Dumbledore. There’s a lot more to Peter Pettigrew’s character than just the ‘Gryffindoor that went bad’ which is how many people paint his personality.
Young Peter Pettigrew was still a very good friend of the Marauders, one of the main four. Peter Pettigrew did not betray his friends until his final years at Hogwarts. Before his betrayal, he was still actively participating in pranks with Remus, James & Sirius, exploring the castle and attending classes, living out a rather ‘normal’ life as a Hogwarts student.
Painting Peter Pettigrew as just an evil Gryffindoor creates a very one dimensional character which is inaccurate to his actual story. Peter did not plan on betraying his friends from the start and there is also a popular head-cannon that suggests Peter originally became a death eater to spy for Dumbledore.
Peter Pettigrew was ONCE a loyal and brave friend, dedicated to getting up to mischief with his three best friends before later going astray from his original morals.

I had this idea come up for an alternate reality version of the story while listening to this- what if Dumbledore was the real enemy, in charge of manipulating Voldemort and had remained corrupted by the dark desires from his early years? I know it would be a very different story, but it was a thought that came to my mind. Dumbledore already had a habit of manipulating and setting pieces into place on the chess board, so to speak, in order to fight Voldemort, eventually leading to his eventual and final defeat. But if he were actually in charge, and Snape wound up killing him the same way… I dunno… Just an intriguing thought.

Unchecked ambition is its own weakness, and it lead to the fall of the friendship between Grindevald and Dumbledore. Dumbledore was never evil and sooner or later would have realized that his friend is leading him on the wrong path. Voldemort on the other hand was evil from the start and was conceived in deception and misuse of magic. He also grew up knowing no love and no friendship. Albus, for all his foolishness as a young man loved his family and his sister. Even his relationship with Grindevald was based on equality and even friendship, unlike Voldemort's relationships which were based on dominance, fear, usefulness and pure-blood theories. Voldemort humiliated and abused most, if not all of his followers, even when they were loyal to him and was ruthless in his pursuit of dominance.

A questionable one maybe, and I never say the play, but I've come to understand that in the Cursed Child an alternate time line was created in which Cedric was never killed by Pettigrew and turned into a Death Eater. Cedric was in fact a Hufflepuff. Of course, this was all an alternate time line, so we could indeed leave that one out.
Now one who's "crime" may be too small for an actual mention in this video, but Marietta Edgecombe could still be one to note. I believe she was a Ravenclaw, and she betrayed Dumbledore's Army to Dolores Umbridge, which huge consequences. She got herself punished for that due to Hermione's jinx putting the word "sneak" on her forehead.
One that could just be as debatable as Barthy Crouch Jr. would be Rita Skeeter. She is definitely a very questionable person who does anything to publish a good story, not really caring about truth and people's reputations. There are some implications she would be a Slytherin, as she was friendly with students from Slytherin house, but then again, considering those were the ones that would do anything to make Harry's life into Hell and doing that through a reporter like her, was a perfect way to do so, so that doesn't really mean she was a Slytherin. It's not even confirmed she actually attended to Hogwarts, but since nearly all British and Irish Witches and Wizards were trained there, it's very likely she went there too.

Even Gryffindor can have an appeal for egocentric people, like James Potter, who definitely had some issues when he was young. I believe that Dumbledore has always been evil even at his older ages, he sided by the good wizards and fought against Voldemort. I am not saying he sided by Voldemort or the death eaters but from the day Harry Potter arrived at Hogwarts Dumbledore had the plan to have Harry die, like a pig waiting to be slaughtered. He clearly did not trust Harry to do the right thing and let Voldemort kill him eliminating his last Horcrux. I know it may be a hot take but it’s something I have always believed.

I was confused by the inclusion of Dumbledore in the thumbnail of the video until you provided an explanation regarding his past with Grindelwald.

Maybe the reason why people think Slytherin is bad is because the books are written from Harry's perspective and he didn't exactly have a good experience with Slytherin and didn't like the house

Before watching the rest of this video. I just want to point out that Hagrid never said there weren't good wizards that came from Slytherin. He only said that all the bad ones were from Slytherin.

That's just as incorrect and misleading. Peter Pettigrew should be enough example.

I honestly think that Wormtail and Lockhearth should be sorted in Slytherin. Not because they were bad or anything, but let's think about it.
Lockhearth: He was always very ambitious and ambition is something all Slytherins have and are putting it as their priority. Slytherins also put themselfs before others. That's exactly how I found Lockhearth to be. Plus I never realy found him smarter than average to be honest.
Wormtail: He always wanted to be on a good side of those with power. Why is that? So he can be in the best position possible. That didn't happen, but he tried to achive that. He also never realy showed much bravery.
Does the sorting hat make mistakes? 🤔

I remember you made a video of a Hufflepuff that made evil mazes, that one seems rather dark to me. I think he should be in this list.

Excluding all the dark wizards from Durmstrang I can think of at least 3 bad Gryffindors. Peter Pettigrew, traitor, murderer, death eater. James Potter, bully. Albus Dumbledore, manipulator, slaveowner, failed dictator. I don't know what house he was in at Hogwarts but there's also Mundungus Fletcher, thief and swindler. And Gilderoy Lockhart, impostor, fraud, cheat.
