We asked our Mexican mamás to have a conversation on various topics from family issues, practicing Mexican culture while living in the United States, topics of identity, and even their hopes of someday being grandmothers! There are many things that connect but also many things that make us unique and unlike others of the same culture. In today's episode of mamah, the moms speak candidly over all these issues and more. Grandma conversation. To hear the difference opinions on it.
Okay, disclaimer: I'm not Latina. My mother used to say, when she was frustrated with us that she was going to give us to the garbage man. After my father died, she took a job as a nanny to a family with two girls. Since their grandmother lived far away, they started calling my mom grandma and they actually saw her as such. The family took pretty decent care of my mom. But I remember one day when Anna was small and she had been crying or fussing a bit. (She was about 3 or 4 years old.), my mother told her the same thing. A few days later, we were talking in the morning, and all of a sudden, Anna got really still, and she got a serious look on her face. When we asked her what was wrong she said "it's the garbage man!" She could hear the garbage trucks outside. My mom traumatized somebody's kids! 🤣🤣
Ask them if they had a favorite pregonero. Or ghost stories. That should be an interesting discussion
I liked all the topics. I think my favorite one was about visiting Mexico and connecting to what it has to offer!

I agree with Martha to a certain point. I am first generation “American” and I am more in tune with my Mexican heritage & traditions than most of my cousins, because I went every summer to Mexico. As an adult I went to live in Michoacán. When I became a parent I took my son with me to live in Mexico, for one year time periods. My son and I would never appreciate our culture the way we do if we hadn’t experienced living there.
I can understand that. I didn't truly understand my partner's Italian roots until I stayed in Italy myself. Now I have a much greater appreciation and even speak the language (kinda lol). Being in the country does matter.
Same here, there’s something special about experiencing the culture in the native land that you can’t really get living in another country, however it is adaptable!
I'm agree. Most of my cousins lives in USA and when they come to Mexico you see how different they are. How they speaks Spanish and the food they likes. And yes, Mexican food are fresher than in USA
@@CarmenLozoya1928 your right, the first couple of times I went to Mexico my cousins & friends laughed at my Spanish. I would say many things incorrectly or use Spanglish words like mapeador, wachando or muncho instead of saying trapeador, mirando or mucho. Before going to Mexico I was a super picky eater and would not eat spicy food at all. While living El Rancho I learned to eat bit of everything, because my aunt would tell me, “Aqui se come de lo que hay, si no quieres ponte a hacer algo”. As you can imagine I didn’t know how to cook anything, so I ate what there was lol. Living out there and learning how to cook and wash by hand taught me how appreciate the luxuries we have in the states.
I would like to see a Mexican mom that actually lives in Mexico 🇲🇽

I cannot tell you how much I love this channel. I am white but grew up around all Mexican moms and this totally hits home for me. I learned to speak Spanish from a very young age and it was the best decision I ever made.

I’ve lived in the US all my life but what helped me understand my culture more was going back to Mexico. There might be parts of your culture here but your roots are always back en tu tierra. I’ve visited so many different states in Mexico and I’ve learned so much. I would’ve never learned all I have in the US. It’s important to visit where you came from. Mexico es único🤍

I agree with Martha, it’s not like Mexicans that go and/or grow up in US aren’t Mexicans but they’ll never be as fully Mexican as those who were born and raised here

Entiendo completamente todos los puntos de vista, depende mucho cuánto tiempo tengas qué dejaste México, tu adaptación al nuevo país, de que estado provengas, porque México es enorme y se vive la cultura de muchas maneras distintas en cada lugar, y muchas más variables hay en esto. Pero me alegra que así como hay personas que pueden y quieren visitar México para recargar energías y sentirse en contacto con sus raíces, también me alegra que algunos no tengan la necesidad de hacerlo porque llevan a México en el corazón ❤

I’ve been to Mexico every summer since I was born. NOTHING compares to Mexico, there is nothing out there that matches the cultural accuracy. I’m not sure if it’s because some of the women don’t have ties to Mexico or choose not to have ties to some family which is why some families no longer visit Mexico but honestly I’d have to say LA does not compare to Mexico they are dead wrong on that. I grew up in both and culinary wise it is absolutely not the same :)
Not all Mexican Americans have recent family in Mexico. My family has lived in the USA for over 5 generations. I don’t know anyone in Mexico.
@@thekingofmoney2000 I think that part of my point lol. The core point I said is that you can’t compare LA with MEXICO. Although there is many cultural similarities it doesn’t match another country where some of us were born or grew up visiting every year. Some families such as the ones you mentioned don’t have those ties anymore and that’s fine:)

I liked when the first question. I was working at fiesta it was this boy who was Mexican same age as me and we got on the topic and I told him not all Mexicans speak Spanish some of them don't speak but understand it I had a friend like that in middle school who didn't speak but understood it. It doesn't make someone any less Mexican to me.
MissDee- Those Mexicans that doesn't speak Spanish doesn't hve the mexican cultured rooted as those Mexican who Speak Spanish and have lived in Mexico. For example, those who don't speak Spanish they hardly listen to mexican music, they eat less Mexican foods, they don't know the Mexican Anthem, they aren't familiar with Mexican history, etc, etc.
@@mikegoodness2673 does it make me less American by not knowing everything about America. If their parents are Mexican I feel like they Mexican. They live in the same household and eat the same food. Some can understand but don't speak it. I listen to Spanish music I'm not Mexican and I can't understand it. Thats how I feel. To me if both parents are Mexican your Mexican. What else are you gonna be
@@spIceemissdee - They are Mexican-Americans ( it doesn't matter if both of their parents where born in Mexico en raised there). If those Mexican-American go to Mexico their behavior would be noticed immediately by the Mexicans that have live their entire life in Mexico.
When Mexicans who have live their entire life in Mexico as soon they see an Mexican-American in Mexico they called them: "Pochos" : is slang in Spanish used in Mexico to refer to Mexican Americans and Mexican emigrants. It is often used pejoratively to describe a Mexican expatriate or a person of Mexican ancestry who lacks fluency or the ability to speak in Spanish and knowledge of Mexican culture.
@@spIceemissdee Believe me, if that "Mexican" who doesn't speak Spanish (Mexican-American) and have never been in Mexico when he goes to Mexico he is going to feel different from the people who live there. The experience of that "Mexican" who doesn't speak Spanish has only through the experience of the "Mexican culture " in the US and at home isn't going to help him that much. The Mexican-American still will feel different from those Mexicans and those Mexicans are going to see the Mexican-American different.
Mexicans who where raised in Mexico and live in the US can tell you the same, cause at some point of their life while living in Mexico they most likely came acrossed with a Mexican-American visiting Mexico for the first time (It could be one of their family member- Uncles, Aunt, Nephew, Nice,)

There is something in me that really hurts for the children that gets threatened with a stranger taking them away for misbehaving, it doesn't really build trust, I would imagine.

Being told I wasn’t Mexican enough bc I didn’t speak Spanish was the most frustrating thing. It made me resent learning especially from family imagine if I told them to learn English bc were in america smh

En esta ocasión soy team Martha... Para apreciar la cultura de México o cualquier país, debes de ir y vivirlo, nada como el lugar mismo. Al igual eso de hablar el idioma, es como un gringo que no hable inglés, esto forma parte angular de la identidad como mexicanos (aunque ciertamente seamos mucho más que solo el idioma)

People forget that Spanish is NOT the official language of Mexico, and that millions of indigenous, pure Mexican people in places like Oaxaca don't speak Spanish :)

@@ayliahloss2324 I don't think there is anything like a "pure mexican", and although Aztecs were in Ancient Mexico there were also Olmecas, Mayas and others. And by the first thing I said, there was a period of time were Spanish people came to our land, who also brought african slaves, by this a lot of miscegenation [not sure if this is the word] happend. Although as I'm writing this, a lot of this indigenous grupos still exist, but I don't think that makes the rest of us more or less mexican
@@oJRo thats what you think. It is completely off my point. A mexican is native blood mixed w European. Indigenous people are not mexicans , they are the decendents of the naitive tribes that lived in mesoamerica. They have no european decent, they are not catholic, or speak Spanish at all.

@ayliah loss I see what you're trying to say but I don't think all Mexicans have to be European descendent, be catholic and speak spanish, and some of the indigenous people do speak spanish, not all of them, but I know some do

This was something I've always found interesting, the distinction some have that to be "Mexican," they should be able to speak Spanish when a significant percentage of Mexicans residing in Mexico do not. Instead, they speak languages native and wholly tied to the lands and history of Mexico.

There are indigenous tribes in all parts of the world. While English/Spanish isn’t what defines the culture, you cannot deny that not enforcing and exercising the skill is a disservice to a community. Usually, when the language is not spoken, it in impoverished regions with limited access to resources, education, development. Kids that grow up with parents who speak Spanish speaking households where the parents speak spanish and they do not, is always the result of parents who didn’t enforce and encourage for whatever reason. Kids will learn what they are taught, language is one of the first things we learn.

Seems like they misunderstood the first question. You should be able to speak Spanish (as well as the language where you reside). If you don't speak the language, how do you fully connect to the culture?
I just want to say that I am from Hawaii n I have 4 grandchildren n they are my life! I would do anything to spend time with them wenever I am free. They bring such joy to my life n the good thing about having grandchildren is that u can always send them home to their parents 😊.

We are originally Native you don't need to speak Spanish. Also spanish like English and Portuguese and French are all colonizer languages. My son has had the chance to see Mexico and got to see the pyramids.

When I visited Mexico, especially Jalisco, I was surprised to see how diverse the cultures were. A lot of red-headed people.
Jalisco is the whitest state in Mexico, the Spaniards didn’t mix in that state, so they pretty much inbred until the revolution in 1910, of you go to the mountains in Jalisco (Los Altos region) there’s an overwhelmingly amount of Spanish ancestry in those towns

The first one "to be a full mexican you have to speak spanish" HELL YEAH. there are a lot of words or expressions that if you don't speak spanish, they will burn you. When I was young, my cousins in mexico would always make fun of me and says jokes because I didn't understand them. I think it's a basic thing if not the FIRST thing you need to know if you want to be fully mexican. you could have your mexican heritage and stuff like that. But if you don't know spanish, you aint mexican.
The other question "visiting mexico is the only way to stay in touch with your mexican roots". To stay in touch with your roots, no. As they said in the video, there are A LOT of places in the US that make you feel like you're in Mexico. But if you want to experience the real, authentic mexican culture, you've gotta come down here. I have friends and family that are wanna be mexican but hadn't even crossed to TJ. And once they came to Mexico (culiacan in my case) they knew that it was something completely different. There may be a lot of areas, restaurants or stores that say they are 100% mexican. But nothing will compare to the actual, 100% legit, authentic, actual, real mexican stores in Mexico. You could listen to all the corridos and rancheras you want, you could watch novelas, you could eat pozole, tamales, tacos and everything. But if you haven't come to Mexico, you haven't experienced the real Mexico.

Martha reminds me of my mom she's very traditional values so much about going and the time she lived in Mexico. You can't change her mind about it she just felt proud about it. Maybe it depends on the generation but what do i know.

There are also many other languages spoken in Mexico, not just Spanish, but I understand Martha bc Spanish is such a big part of the culture now bc of Spanish colonization
I agree with Martha. I was born in the US. To mexican parents. I hadn’t been to Mexico until 3 years ago. And it is SO different being mexican in Mexico, than being mexican in the US. It’s like a whole different world. And that’s even when I grew up speaking Spanish with mexican culture.
Visiting Mexico it is to keep on touch with my Mexican roots, claro que si!. Como Mexico no ahi 2, tiene uno que ir a las playas, a visitar a la familia!. ❤

Martha is the only one who understood the first question. It didn't ask whether a Mexican can speak Spanish only, but if a Mexican should be able to speak Spanish.
There is no way a person who hasn't lived in a country (went to school or worked) can call themselves that nationality. Even though I lived in Russia for the first 16 years of my life, living away for 20 years I can see how much more of a Canadian I am. I had a co-worker who lived in Canada her entire long life and still called herself Finnish. There is no way she was Finnish. But you don't realize that until you have lived in another country.
