Penn State offense grinds out win
The high-flying offense we became accustomed to through the first month of the season didn't show up for the Nittany Lions. Penn State didn't complete a pass over 20 yards in the game. Once again, quarterback Drew Allar didn't make many mistakes to put the ball in harm's way but was off-target in the first half, missing several passes that would have converted third and fourth down.
In the third quarter, Penn State ran the ball 16 times. However, kicker Sander Sahaydak missed two field goals and kept the game close throughout the contest. Overall, the Penn State offense had four drives of eight plays or more. They also accumulated multiple chunk runs without breaking off a big run for a touchdown in the game.
Defense dominates in the second half
The Penn State defense gave up just 32 total yards in the second half before AJ Harris stepped in front of a fourth down pass from Altmyer. Harris took the ball back for a touchdown, but a block in the back penalty on slot corner Zion Tracy eliminated the defenisve score.
Still, the defense dominated the line of scrimmage all night and prevented Illinois from getting into a rhythm offensively. Illinois averaged 1.8 yards rushing on the night.

Just a really satisfying win. Blowing Illinois off the ball and watching the RBs dominate was awesome. WR blocking is so much better this year too.
Just dominant.
I thought, the offensive line played very well, and running backs!!!
Better start getting better. Special teams and stupid defense penalties are holding this team back.
Agreed, because the defense after the first drive, played very well, but the off sides, and bullshit is ridiculous!!! I am happy with the offensive line though, they moved the trenches and ran the ball very well 👏
@@kevinchandler179 And the tackling out of bounds shows a lack of discipline.
@teekay_1 You are absolutely right about that buddy 👏
Boy, Zane Durant is a badass man!!! A. Carter was all over the place as well!!!
We also, have players who are hurt and getting healthy, and by the time we play other challenging games, they will be healthy hopefully 👍 and ready to go!!!!
Time to hold some kicker tryouts.
PSU dominated both lines against my Illini. Your crowd won PSU the game by causing critical mistakes…bad snap 1st and goal at the 2 on a probable TD drive, then another procedure penalty 2 snaps later, and then again on 4th and 1 when we were driving late in the game.
I’m optimistic about where we are compared to what we’ve been accustomed to.
PS: A LOT of people made money against that ridiculous point spread. :)
Good luck the rest of the year.
I agree with you buddy!!! I don't give a shit about the spread, literally!!! Every game is different and doesn't play out the way we want to, and dominate on offense and defense!! I was actually very impressed with the defense after the first drive, and offense really just ran the ball and realized we could win that way!!! WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled
The talent disparity between guard, guard, center on both sides of the line and the LB play was obvious and exploited by PSU.
@dennisgriffin6742 Thanks, we are not a perfect team by any means, but I think we are very good and dangerous team going forward!!
Allar was middling in the pass game. Unimpressive game from our WRs. OL and RBs were terrific. Not feeling Carter at DE. He just doesn’t look right. Much better as a LB. Man, FG kicking. Ugh. I’ll take the win.
Agreed, but sometimes that is the way wins go!!! It's not always going to be elite and we blow everyone out, fact!@! WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled
Happy for the victory, but are we confident when OSU comes to town? They gotta clean it up. Sloppy sloppy.
In hindsight, the Illinois defense was overrated. They played a defense with a plan to prevent the big play and it meant that the run game was there all game. As to their O-line, it really just points out that Nebraska wasn't nearly as good as people thought they were.
That said, it was a workman-like game. Other thoughts:
Beau Pribula simply isn't a good QB
PSU needs a different kicker
No, Allar was not off, the game plan was off in the first half.
They defense took too long to jell
Poor play calling in a lot of 3rd and long and especially in 4th down tries.
Tfrank, there are issues with every damn team in college football, not just our Nittany Lions buddy!!! I am always going to be happy with a win, is there work to do, hell yes!!! But, after the first drive from Illinois, the defense settled in and looked very good!!! The offense just had a night, where they were out of sink!!!! WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled
Our biggest problem in this game was ourselves. And the final couple minutes of defense was what made our defense so elite last year. Manny let our athletes play freely and get at the QB. That’s what we did in the final minutes and it worked.
Badgers DL ran out of steam in the second half against USC... PSU's D meanwhile seems to have the horses to last through the entire game. A plus. The things needing immediate attention include... an inconsistent, panicky Allar, weird situational play calling in the red zone, and FG kicking.
you averaged 1 yard a carry, thats why you lost…
Your main pt was Drew was bad? Huh
he wasnt good
Drew wasn't good or bad!!! He didn't have to do too much tonight people!!!! Andy realized that the offensive line was getting huge push off the ball, and ran it down their throat
Undisciplined JF team
I kinda agree, Franklin can't go out there on the field and do it for them??? Literally, players have to be held to accountability as well?? WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled
And, we ran for almost 250 yards!!@
