  • Time-lapse of building the fuselage for my RV-8A up to what is sometimes called the "quick-build" stage. At the completion of this video, the fuselage is more or less in the state a kit ordered as quick-build would be in when it arrives. This covers about 330 hours of build time at 7200x (1 second = 2 hours) completed between mid-August 2022 and the very end of January 2023.
At this point the airframe is structurally complete, with the exception of the turtledeck, canopy, and engine cowling. I can now work on items such as control rigging, empennage attachment, canopy fitting/attachment, wing installation, control surface alignment, engine mounting, routing of fuel and brake systems, some wiring, etc, and eventually the landing gear, engine cowling, avionics, etc, etc.
Since I last posted a video (more than a year ago) I've also put in about 450 additional hours not covered here, working on items like wing and tail wiring, wing and tail fiberglass, drawing a full avionics wiring diagram, paint scheme ideas, etc. I've also had another month past the end of this video working on the fuselage further.
Yes, I'm still tracking rivet count, I'm at just over 12600 total so far. I'm at about 1530 total hours logged.
And, of course, many thanks to my helpers Ben, Steve, Ted, Gilead, and Elise! I couldn't have gotten this far without you!
