To clear things up with the theory that lava boosts the growth rate of netherwart - it does not.
I know this by looking through the code of the netherwart and by the fact that soulsand does not change block- or metadata ID upon being near lava.

See the outline of the nether warts (not the hitboxes) and if it is a little more black than the other (no im not racist) it's fully grown. (try to avoid these type of messages so you can see better)

Put rows of lava in between rows of nether wart aids in growth rates. Just like crops and water, but instead lava.
