  • The deep petrosal nerve (sympathetic) and the greater petrosal nerve (parasympathetic) come together in the middle cranial fossa, near foramen lacerum, and enter the pterygoid canal to become the nerve of the pterygoid canal (also known as the nerve of the Vidian canal).

Very clear and concise. The work of a genius. The 3d printed sphenoid bone really helped paint the picture. Thanks.

It took me approximately 1 week to cover this nerve alone. Such a complex little thing. Ended up with a OneNote document covering that nerve by itself as part of the head and neck anatomy. Nothing popped up about it on the exam, but I hope it does so on the retake. It was nice to use this video to double-check my notes. It`s not a nerve that the books is doing a good job of describing. It took what felt like ages to use the internet and find information from different places.

    just a question,
Does the vidian nerve pass the lacerum foramen to pterygoid canal ?

Have a search through my channel and see if any of those videos help. I've talked about most of these topics in various places, but in terms of anatomy rather than physiology.

Do you think atypical trigeminal neuralgia might possibly be due to damage to the vidian nerve instead of the TN? Can damage to the vidian nerve lead to dry sinuses and dry eyes similar to Sjogren's syndrome symptoms?

Damage to one Vidian nerve would only affect structures on the same side. I assume inappropriate pain would not be associated with the Vidian nerve as I didn't see any references to sensory fibres taking this route.
