Was an underlying problem ever found with the car?

    • @SeanRoss-tz6cj

Underlying faults was never disclosed as they maintained there was no fault.
Also the usable capacity of an EV is a proportion of the battery which cannot physically be used for driving. In my case the car was advertised as a 71.1 kWh battery but only 64.7 kWh is ever usable. Some is untouchable for other critical functions. But most dealers don't disclose this.

Every time a battery is discharged and recharged it incrementally loses storage capacity. The lithium battery in my car is rated at 10000 cycles but at each cycle the total storage capacity is reduced. The amount of discharge and rate of charge also impact total cycled. Hi discharge rates reduce the life of the battery. High charge rates also decrease battery life. It’s inherent in the chemistry. A battery life is cycles not time. . .

The usable battery is actually something else. A portion of the battery is completely locked away and not shown to the driver at all and can’t be used. The battery management system progressively unlocks that portion as the battery ages to help it continue to appear like the capacity (range) stays constant for as long as possible.

The only time they take on an EV is if they pick them up dirt cheap at auction, there are plenty apparently that go round the auction circuit time and time again and eventually the reserve is lowered and sell for peanuts. The other time is part exchange when the sellers are desperate and take a major hit on them. They are still viewed as a huge risk, they class them as a similar risk to a car with a shady service history they could cost them major repairs, ie a new engine or gearbox.

Neither are they a fixed thing; they and all aspects of them are in constant development, as can be demonstrated by the fact that the EVs of 5 years ago are very different to those of today. As for power, that's just one of those ignorant statements that the determinedly anti-ev zealots make. It's irrelevant, as it'll take 50 odd years for EVs to come anywhere near 100% usage; it's wrong, since the UK already generates enough power to cover full EV usage, and 5 minutes on Google would tell you that, and because EVs don't and wouldn't all charge at once anyway.

Relying on such a fragile entity to provide predictable and safe behaviour is bonkers. If it wasn't for government bullying, there's no way this technology would be in use. I tested it a couple of times at full charge and driving to work on local streets and on some long trips on the highway. The range is typically quoted for the section of the battery we can use, not the entire amount. Weather also plays a factor in the range, you will get less range in colder temps and if it’s too hot and you need to run the AC a lot, that also has an effect on the range as well. After a couple of months of driving, I figured it was better to stay on local streets for better range, instead of taking the highway, added about 20 minutes to the commute. If I had to do it again, I would pick one of the Korean (US market) brands as they seem to be better with the range and how much they cost.

To maintain the long-term health of the battery, it's recommended to keep the charge between 20% and 80%. This effectively reduces the car's range from 150 miles to 90 miles. Additionally, carrying more than one passenger, using temperature controls, driving uphill, and facing cold or windy weather can further decrease the potential mileage. Consequently, these factors can significantly diminish the practicality of the vehicle as a reliable mode of transportation.

****The estimated range of our electric vehicles (EVs) is provided as a guideline and can vary significantly due to factors such as battery age, terrain, weather conditions, driving style, and vehicle load. These are outside the manufacturer's control and will affect the actual range you experience.

I’m on my 3rd EV, so familiar with typical range figures. 110 miles of range is appalling and clearly indicates a problem with the battery. The other issue on range is that the dealer will quote a WLTP range which is usually very optimistic. All OEMs have to do the same range test (by law) on a rolling road (chassis dynamometer), at various road speeds and at an ambient temperature of 23C. Unfortunately the average road speed in this test is low so range figures are optimistic. The dealers quote these optimistic ranges. If the dealer knew more about the cars that they were selling they would inform the customer of a more realistic range.

EV range depends on how you drive, the weather (cold is bad) and the size of the battery and weight of the car. Audi is a premium brand but isn't very good at making EVs- if I understand the video the vehicle was a 2020 model which he bought 2 years later. That would make if 4 years old: I have a 2021Tesla M3 Long Range which gets in the winter 240 miles; summer about 300 miles- and on a smaller battery. Even allowing for the immature Audi tech 60 miles is a joke- you'd get more in a 2018 BMW i3 at about a third of the price.
