I am new in GIS and learning a lot of things. I saw this video it is really helpful, but I could not solve my problem on projection. I currently working my study area shape file and DEM downloaded from USGS. The shape file projected to define projection WGS-1984-UTM-zone-37N (toolboxes/system toolboxes/data management/ define projection/projected coordinate system/UTM/WGS 1984/Northern Hemisphere/37N). I did the same projection for DEM file (toolboxes/system toolboxes/data management/ define projection/projected coordinate system/UTM/WGS 1984/Northern Hemisphere/37N). Before doing this I try to adjust the layer property and projection to WGS-1984-UTM-zone-37N. But I could not find the layers in the same place the data frame, even though I checked the DEM and shape file is the same place from the topographic features. The only solution I got it now to see the two layers in the same place DEM (GCS-WGS-1984) and shape file WGS-1984-UTM-zone-37N but this might have problems in my final result. So could You please help me to fix this problem? kindest regards, Bella,
It is better to import the projection from some other file which is having same projection, rather than defining it yourself, as some errors can creep in
sir I have download land cover images from modis. Its in sinusoidal projection. i have changed it to gcs. My study area is also in gcs. But while overlay the shape of study area gets distorted. What to do

When ever I use UTM and use its grid line in layout then grid line is inclined and define coordinate origin is different but when ever i use wgs1984 every thing is okay but length changes

Sir, two shapefile polygons were supposed to overlap, but they won't.In my first attempt, a month ago, they got easily overlap. However I lost my mxd file.And now I've been trying every projections, but doesn't get overlap. What possibly could be done for this?

Ya you can do it. Just try to understand files are in which coordinate system and define accordingly

Thats basically to have images overlap. Attribute table will also change but you may have to open it in new project as a fresh file

I did not understand your question. If shapefile is not accurate, nothing can be done

Either your actual map is not correct or you will have to edit DEM. Where did you get the actual map from?
AsterDEM from USGS earth explorer and cartosat DEM from Bhuvan
I am asking how did you come to know that its not matching? You compared it with what?
Clear indication that there is something wrong with DEM or the idea of the actual path

Ensure that both are georeferenced and both are in same projection. You can also import projection of one image to the other
