  • Rennes-le-Château, a small village in France with a population of less than 100, was made famous by the village priest Bérenger Saunière. A priest who grew up in poverty, but seemingly stumbled upon unbelievable wealth, so much so that he completely redecorated his church, as well as built himself a house with that money. The origin of Saunière's money remains unknown to this day, though there are multiple theories - some more reliable than others - which has led to years of treasure hunters visiting the small French village.

That's right... Henry Lincoln originally picked the book up (about a poor priest, who gained wealth) from a French second-hand book store (written in French I believe) for his holiday reading. Having a background in documentary making, it aroused his attention. He then collaborated with Baigent and Leigh to produce Holy Blood, Holy Grail

@@rachelg9873basically people pay to have their sins forgiven so they can go to heaven. It’s a major reason why Martin Luther wrote his 95 Thesis that caused the Protestant revolution. The Catholic Church was giving out too many of these “indulgences” and on top of that, the rich were funding the church and influencing church officials. Kinda like how companies lobby politicians today.

I did a study on this decades ago following the trail of the knights templar - Rosecrucian and esoteric Cathars histories.
As unconvoluted as I can make it, it goes like this.
in medieval times nobles over the christian world borrowed gold to raise armies and establish their dynasties.
Where the gold came from I didnt find out, but it seemed to be tied in with the alternative catholic religion, the Cathars.
It seems the Knights Templars were the trusted shippers.
Repaying the gold was usually a problem, with penalties of damnation in hell possibly, however the Catholic Church branded the Cathars as heretics.
This justified the Frankish nobles carrying out an inquisition against their lenders, having been guaranteed absolution for the torture amd murder of the Cathars.
It seems these Frankish nobles wiped out their lenders and the Cathar communities along with their debts.
Some centuries later this priest is given a dilapidated village community to serve that used to be part of the Cathar dominions and becomes fabulously wealthy.
The questions I was left with, as the Cathars apparently died without recamting and therefore not divulging, where's the gold?
Did the gold only get discovered when the Priest swept out the church larder, who knows? Some where along the line the Rosecrucian became part of the narrative. That was before the priest became part of it.
I was following the mythology of the spear of destiny, the grail and other ancient relics at the time, also Magdeline's day is also my birthday.

A similar story to the true millionaires created by the gold rushes of the American West- the hardware dealers who the sold picks, shovels, pans at hugely inflated prices- feeding the fever. The millions made in tourism at Rennes-le-Château since the 50's is the true "treasure". The Oak Island TV show comes to mind as well. Good on those who make it work I say. Marie was a genius IMO- played him like a flute and used his gold fever to her advantage. I wonder if her inability to write/talk at the end was real or just the last act in her performance.
