    Something I really love about the setting is HOW it was developed through solo play. Would love to see a few paragraphs in the book about how something like that could be accomplished through our own play.

    3:22 historically people were really afraid of putting gun powder next to their face. You'd fire a cannon by lighting a fuse and then standing back. But a gun you need a lit wick to hit a pan right next to your face. Also people were afraid of pistol misfires because they were more likely to injure your hand.
    You could say in your world that gun powder is more volatile or is an eye irritant or something.

    I had noticed on the image of Arne's character sheet that he was referred to as an Ironlander, so I was going to ask about that but you addressed it here. I think it's pretty cool of Shawn to let the Ironlands officially cross over with the Broken Empires. I'm thrilled for you that the Kickstarter has done so well and I hope it gets him some more sales, too, because he deserves it.

    Oh man. The low Fantasy is amazing. There are so many things that are right the way I like it. The combat system sounds great, the magic is awesome. The crunch is quite low. Mechanics seam to be designed to help the narrative instead of having a super balanced video game / card game like experience. And now the way you describe the low magic setting. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
    I was reading the XDM when I started out DMing. I had not enough experience with TTRPGs to make it really work. Too many blanks to fill in in every session. I needed a bit more rules to see how a game can flow. Pf2e was great for that. But it took like 1.5 hours to make a non spell caster. That did not fly well with dangerous combat. And all those feats where way to much to remember in combat for my players to really the the fully balanced experience pf2e actually offers. Now I am slowly getting there. And man does your game sit in the sweet spot I was longing for all the time!!

    It'd be really neat if you could find a scientist/worldbuilder that could give a more solid reason about why gunpowder works for canons but not guns (yet) Just a little more scientific detail about why that chemical doesn't have the power at lower calibres.

    • @chiefmcclane
      @chiefmcclane Месяц назад +1

      It could be the formula for gunpowder is different here. Some sort of geological consideration that requires a larger amount of material for flashpoint or ignition that makes small arms impossible or impractical.

    • @uriel7395
      @uriel7395 Месяц назад

      It doesn't really need a special reason. In real history, cannons were commonplace before guns, and the earliest guns were just small cannons on the end of a stick.

    • @graynanuuq
      @graynanuuq Месяц назад +3

      Simplest answer to me is that generally available metallurgy isn't up to it. The walls of cannons are much thicker than the walls of a pistol/rifle barrel. Thinning the walls of the barrel down to where it's portable results in the barrels almost always exploding when enough powder is used to make it an effective weapon.

    I have backed your game. I think I like the style of rules and that you say that it can be adapted to other settings as well which is nice since many of us, RPG nerds, tend to like to create our own stuff. What I would reaaaally like is to have some advice in the rules book, for how to maybe tweak or add stuff. What I´m specifically thinking about is guns since you say that there are none and I'd like to have them in the game. Would that be possible?

    Is there a summary of considerations we should make when making our own setting for the Broken Empires? Aside from how magic works

  • @nutherefurlong
    @nutherefurlong Месяц назад +2

    The cannon thing could maybe be the ironworking isn't good enough to create human bearable small arms without it exploding or being too heavy? I dunno. I guess big stronk folks could still have cannons, maybe of questionable quality, and you could have skullduggery with a loadout, one shot and it explodes thing.
    I assume the different nonhuman peoples have skills as part of their ability set that are maybe hard or impossible to get for most human beings? Or is it all learnable, say if a human kid grew up in a Dwarven caravan?

    See I didn't know low fantasy usually means that there are not cities or locations with a healthy mixture of peoples. In a world I have been making/thinking about is low magic/fantasy but I am trying to make major cities mixed up pretty good. So maybe I cannot call it low fantasy/low magic to try to categorize it.

    • @Mr_Chinchila
      @Mr_Chinchila Месяц назад

      Honestly. Low Fantasy usually means that anything out of Human scope is rarer. He does say Low Fantasy, but I think both his and yours is more akin to Mid Fantasy (its more of an axis than strictly "THIS" to me). Yours is just a bit more towards High Fantasy, while his more towards Low. Makes sense?

    • @TomTrustworthy
      @TomTrustworthy Месяц назад

      @@Mr_Chinchila Yeah that makes sense. Honestly it is difficult to brainstorm in the world I am going for. I want to make areas where each race started so it makes sense. But I am pretty sick of the idea that ALL elves live here while all dwarves live over there. But all my references from movies and books I've read always go that route. So it's just a struggle but I'll keep going with it.

    • @Mr_Chinchila
      @Mr_Chinchila Месяц назад

      @@TomTrustworthy One way I once did was, forget the races specific thing and focus on climate and geography and how that affect each people. What do I mean, if you're going cosmopolitan yes, each race/species has their advantages but in the setting maybe it's less of a "we're dwarves thus we from here" and more like two countries that have dwarves amidst them that have different cultures they're inserted in. I think Erebor from D&D kinda does this.
