I apologize Davie. My ancestral home was the poor side of Glasgow. Thankfully I have fishing. Thank you for the professional demonstrations you give. I love your patterns and videos. Cheers
These make good stonefly nymph imitations I make mine from ice dub in black, green wool thorax with a thorax cover of green orange tinsel works brilliantly Davie sir 😀👍👍
Jings Davie, I cant remember the last time I tied Montanas ...... I used them a lot in the 1990`s in small to large. I caught a lot of fish on them browns and rainbows. Well reminded!!
A great, great nymph, one of the first I tied,a friend tied the thorax using green chenille, when asked why, he insisted it was yellow. Turned out he was colour blind and saw no difference between his and mine which were indeed yellow, no matter both did well.Your Blue Montana quite the eye opener, though you're constantly opening our eyes. Happy Holidays btw, stay well!
Davie, this is a really sharp looking nymph. Trimming the chenille really adds to the REAL silhouette of the nymph. I like the color combination also. I think this Nymph will catch different species of fishes. Thanks again for a great video. I have learned so many things from your videos. I have not been fishing this year but I will be ready for the spring of 2021. I live in Southeast USA. Most of the trout streams are 300 KM north of me. To get to good trout water I have to go to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. It has 2,100 Miles about 2,600 KM of upper mountain wild trout streams mostly. Small Brook trout, down stream, stocked Rainbows, and Brown trout.
Hi James, Amazing distances you have to travel to go fishing we are very fortunate here in Scotland as I could be on my local river within 10 minutes walk and I'm in a large town and with 5 minutes drive I could be on another river so we are very lucky..I'm glad you enjoy the videos.. All the very best Davie.
Mr. McPhail, The original had goose biots for a tail, as I’m sure you know. You have made the fly more buggy and the tail easier to tie at once. Bravo! Greetings from across the pond. I’m asking for one of your salmon flies on eBay for Christmas. You please take care. Best to you and yours.
Unusual to have a blue combination. I guess a red or orange would be a killer. Interesting to get the background on this fly. Apparently in Montana and the Yellowstone river the stonefly which the call salmon fly strangely enough is prolific. They are nearly 2ins long and the fish go mad for them. Some beast of a fly.
Davie, I always seem to have a problem tying a head. The thread ends up half covering the eye of the hook. I leave lots of space to try to avoid this. But you always manage to tie right up to the eye without problem. Where am I going wrong?
Hi edhubble, I had the same issues when I first started... Waxing your thread will give more grip with less turns and keeping the thread tight as loose turns will cause you to add more that you need and bulk up your head that's why I always hold onto the bobbin and even whip finish before I cut away the last material I tye on. I hope this helps you.. All the very best Davie..
Hi Graeme, The chenille is fluorescent though I don't know what dye was used although Veniards teal blue dye is fluorescent. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. All the very best Davie
Thank you. Any suggestions on a very very basic fly tying setup for someone (me) on the edge of homelessness, trying to stay Covid free, but lucky to have bought a fishing license pre pandemic? I used to make flys with material I found blowing in the street when I was a kid in the '60s, so I'm pretty resourceful. It's more the system to hold the hook that I'm looking for. Thanx!.
Hey there! Check out cabelas they have vises for 20 bucks, and for 36 dollars a case for it and every tool you'll need: scissors, hackle pliers, bobbin, bobbin threader, etc, you name it. Here's a link. If you are on a tight budget there will be absolutely nothing wrong with this setup, it will hold the hook just fine if you adjust the cam correctly and you'll have all the tools to get tying. If you just need the vise then its just 20 bucks but I think the 36 dollar kit is an insane value. Of course you could spend as much as you want on a vise, from tens to hundreds to thousands depending on the model. If you gave me your price limit on a vise I could help you out even more. Also, if you have it shipped to you then you don't have to worry about possible Covid exposure. Check out the link i sent and let me know what you think! Hope this helps, stay safe and well! EDIT: Now that I'm looking at it the kit comes with a dubbing spinner but doesn't come with a whip finish tool, i kind of wish it was the reverse of this as the whip finish is the more important tool, but you can look online how to whip finish by hand or you may already know how! www.cabelas.com/shop/en/cabelas-standard-fly-tying-tool-kit?ds_e=GOOGLE&ds_c=Shop%7CGeneric%7CAllProducts%7CHigh%7CSSCCatchAll&gclid=CjwKCAiAtej9BRAvEiwA0UAWXiDNkEzFarJ-ZKPkSUj8KeNgKD0vhBu0JTWKf20zuyjUCw_MDnEw5hoCGw4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
@@sirmegallot3276 Thank you. I tried with a suction vise from harbor freight a few years ago. No dice. We have a cabela's 1/2hr from me. I will look when I get some $$. The kit seems cheap enough.
Hello Davie Do you fish this nymph as point fly? I wanted to use the nymph on a dropper without the lead foil because the point fly has a tungsten bead of 3.5 mm. Can I use the nymph so also? Kind regards Herwig.
Morning Herwig, It can be fished anywhere in the cast weighted or unweighted depending on the method you want to fish them. I weighted the ones I tyed for friends that were fishing in Argentina as they wanted to get them down deep to where the sea trout were lying... All the very best Davie

@@DavieMcPhail Thanks for the reply Davie which begs further questions, what is the base material before you dyed it and how did you get the silver flecks into it. Did you spin it yourself?
