If anyone ever accused these guys of being sane it would be an insult. They're bloody brilliant and keep jumping back and forth across the line of madness and genius. GO TOY DOLLS!
I believe their drummer Malcolm Dick used to play in one of the North Easts most famous Brass Bands The Ever Ready (Cragside) Band. He also has played with Ritchie Blackmore with his band Blackmores Night
'madness' would be fine if it weren't in a YT video. 'genius', I listenned over and over again, all I heard was less-than-mediocre musicianship. It's sad that klutzes like these get a following , while really brilliant musicians are hardly getting the recognition they deserve.
Olga never lost his roots, despite numerous line up changes they always gave 110% what a great musician and he always picked other equally talented people to play alongside him !!! Michael Agar .. a very talented man !!!
Not only was this the most famous tune based on a movie, but this music set alone sold millions. But, it's good to know even young adults appreciate musical history, because they know older music is what made today's music. Nice job "The Toy Dolls".
Top notch musicians. Expert in playing their fave instruments, instrumental wonders, great sense of fun and a great comedy touch. All happy to take the piss while knowing they are damned good at what they do...
There is a studio version out there you should hear. This is a little over halfway into their live show where they have given so much that they have almost worn themselves out with exhaustion. The drummer is backstage taking a shower after given ten performance's worth of energy. This performance is *meant* to be a mellow point in the middle of a thunderous show. It is not meant to wow banjo enthusiasts or to be a replacement of the original. Pity on anybody who took it the wrong way.
@twizzm When I saw them the drummer went backstage for a break and Olga and Gary Fun, the bass player, both played acoustic guitars. After the break the drummer, Marty, came back out looking cleaned up.
most of my musical influences were based out of my family being from the mountains of Kentucky until I was expelled from school in the 7th grade and ship to California to live with my aunt and found punk rock. this is legit the best video I could show to explain why I am the way I am with music.
Olga - a guitar god. And here it goes - IMO....he should be in the top 10 guitarists of all time! Yes I'm talking about Knopfler, Satriani, Hendrix, Vaughn, Santana, Clapton etc....I dare say it! Olga is up there!!!
Not at all sorry all those list are bullshit and don't account for all the amazing acoustic artist out there so yeah I would debate Clapton shouldn't even be on there
So and YOU re able to judge all of them, on behalf of WHO and based on WHICH proven ability?! RIght, on NOTHING, just another jealous idiot, claiming to know it all and being able to judge other people without EVER having produced something on his own, that could just come close to the listed guys. Wouldn't be a problem, if you had marked it as your "opinion", instead of acting like an allknowing asshole.
2018 and still listening. I remember I found my first toy tolls shirt at a random ass bodega when I visited my mom in long island new york.. Best shirt I ever had.
Original it was written by Arthur Smith, and recorded with Smith playing a 4 string plectrum banjo, accompanied by Don Reno on a 5 string bluegrass banjo. It was rearranged for the movie " Deliverance" by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell, and Smith was not accredited as song writer. This caused a lot of fuss, including a lawsuit that Smith won. Two of Don Reno's sons btw plays in the band Hayseed Dixie. I recommend you check them out if you like this song :)
Olga was and still is a beast of a musician and could give even Eddie Van Halen a run for his money. Didn’t know he could play banjo, but I’m not surprised! Thanks for the upload!
Never seen this before I don't know that much about these guys or there background I just knew of them through mates at school hearing a few things they did Now yrs later I'm surprised I missed the talent these guys have Mad as fook but brilliant at the same time
A great tune performed by so many artists. But the best version I ever heard was on the "Tonight Show". Doc Severenson, the band leader, played it on his trumpet. WOW!
To put on so much showmanship requires a confidence in your musical abilities. If you can’t cut it without the comedy element, you’re never going to cut it!
I have no idea who these guys are, BUT, they love to play and it shows... even with this old song. it made me laugh, cheer and just feel good.... thanks for posting :)
If you liked Toy Dolls Deuling Banjos. Look for their version of Johan Sébastien Bach's Tocatta, or the Saber Dance. Or anything off their first 3 albums, later in their career, they went metalish but retained the sense of humor.
Great band these. From my neck of the woods in Sunderland. They are a lot bigger in Germany and Japan now though. I think Olga plays Bass for The Dickies now
I want to see The Toy Dolls once in my life. Here in Barcelona, Spain. I listened maybe 15 years ago one friend in the High school that one friend of him told him that...well, my High School told me that his boots were a bit of crap after the dancing, maybe from kicking or maybe from the bad tiles in the floor or the bad ground with some crackings in the concrete ground...
The original was a four-string plectrum banjo and accompanied by five-string bluegrass banjo. But it seems that very few ppl can play a Five string Banjo. (I base this statement simply because it always seems to be a guitar)
Don't anybody think for a minute they were a novelty act! they are incredibly talented musician's!
Ya goddamned know it
Still a novelty act of sorts, but the same can be said for any band with a consistent and unique theme.
It's a long way from Everybody Jitterbug 🤔
Absolutely 💯
The worst version by a distance of this gimmick piece.
If you can't even fingerpick a 5 string banjo, leave it alone. What a klutz...😖
If anyone ever accused these guys of being sane it would be an insult. They're bloody brilliant and keep jumping back and forth across the line of madness and genius.

Still far from sane
Olga never lost his roots, despite numerous line up changes they always gave 110% what a great musician and he always picked other equally talented people to play alongside him !!! Michael Agar .. a very talented man !!!
and still going . Legend
Look past the humour and you have 2 fine talented men here, entertaining us, thanks for your brilliant entertainment 👍👏

K genios del Punk... los vi unas 3 o 4 veces en diferentes epocas de mi vida...pero no me decepcionaron en ninguno de sus conciertoS
Top notch musicians. Expert in playing their fave instruments, instrumental wonders, great sense of fun and a great comedy touch. All happy to take the piss while knowing they are damned good at what they do...
Oh my my… How could I not discovered this band before… I am 57 years old and I am glad I found this excellent band now 😊

@twizzm I saw them once. It was in 1997. They basically blew the roof off the place.
@twizzm They might do different things depending on the lineup.
most of my musical influences were based out of my family being from the mountains of Kentucky until I was expelled from school in the 7th grade and ship to California to live with my aunt and found punk rock. this is legit the best video I could show to explain why I am the way I am with music.
😢👍✊
One of the best punk bands ever, They should really be more famous haha
There is a good reason why they are not.
Think they are famous right enough, among the punks!

I love the Toy Dolls. They were always so funny and great audience pleasers. Sundeland's finest!
I'll bet Olga burns off a marathon's worth of calories in every concert. Serious energy.

Not Forgetting Angus Young!!!!!
Not even close
So and YOU re able to judge all of them, on behalf of WHO and based on WHICH proven ability?!

You´re right!
Angus is the best for ever and always!!!
But remind Bon!!!
2018 and still listening. I remember I found my first toy tolls shirt at a random ass bodega when I visited my mom in long island new york.. Best shirt I ever had.
It doesn’t matter what sort of music it is
anyone who can play an instrument like that is brilliant
Original it was written by Arthur Smith, and recorded with Smith playing a 4 string plectrum banjo, accompanied by Don Reno on a 5 string bluegrass banjo.

amazing, love Toy Dolls, so didn't get the recognition they deserved...full on fast as fu*k lets av it skill
Hi there, that has to be one of the most entertaining versions of Duelling Banjos that I have seen. Many thanks for up loading.
Olga was and still is a beast of a musician and could give even Eddie Van Halen a run for his money. Didn’t know he could play banjo, but I’m not surprised! Thanks for the upload!
He can't. Bluegrass banjo is played with three fingers using metal fingerpicks, not with a guitar pick.
“Proper” technique don’t mean shit if you can pull it off. Olga pulls it off. Is he Otis Taylor or Tony Furtado? No, but he’s not trying to be.
Sure. But still he can't play bluegrass banjo.
Eddie Van Halen probably can’t play ragtime, what’s your point? I never said Olga could play bluegrass, I said he can play banjo.
FGM I don't see at which point in this video you're even close to right. He's not even in the same genre or class as EVH
Some people don't get it, It's a duel, both musicians trying to out do the other. This has got to be the best version of this tune ever
you have to see more movies... Deliverance 1972 john boorman
There’s not a chance that this is the best version. The version from the movie “Deliverance” is still and always will be the best version.

A great tune performed by so many artists. But the best version I ever heard was on the "Tonight Show". Doc Severenson, the band leader, played it on his trumpet. WOW!
