I think this just depicted a typical schoolboy crush on a teacher/mommy figure, but replaced the boy fantasy with a girl’s form (keeping the same basic emotions and attraction).
@@tablescissors This is not a story of a boy's fantasy replaced by a girl's, but of a strong bond or friendship between women that was real in old Japan. Generally, such a relationship is referred to as an "S" (acronym for Sister).
@@epoilcaIn Japan, it's believed that girls commiting lesbianism in high school is a phase. But once they graduate they are supposed to go back to "normal," going back to being heterosexual or something.
Extra context for English speakers: This song is about a Class S relationship, a cultural trope of homoerotic friendships between women in all-girls schools, particularly in Taisho era Japan. They were usually between students, but could also be between students and teachers, as shown here (note: yes, that's highly sketch any way you slice it; but, it's also important to note teachers were often not much older than the students. The teacher here being unmarried points to them likely being nearly peers age-wise-the power dynamic is totally off, but it'd depend on the situation whether it's full blown pedophilia). This song deals with the tragedy of such relationships: they were only tolerated because they weren't viewed as "real" romance, just childish delusions to let a girl express those feelings in a safe environment before moving on to heterosexual marriage. The student is resistant to the idea of having to grow up and marry a man she doesn't love, instead of a woman she does love. To me, it's ambiguous whether the teacher truly felt the same way, or if she viewed their bond more as friendship, and the student is projecting her own romantic feelings onto her ("Class S" as a category did not fit neatly into our ideas of platonic and romantic-it encompassed the spectrum from "besties" to full-blown lesbians). Either way, the teacher is about to marry, which then proceeds to sever any bond she and the girl had, as tended to be the case in these situations.
@@mard-e6086 No one really knows! The most common reason I've heard is that it stands for "sister," but some other options could be "shoujo" or "schön."
Solely from the animation, it definitely looks like grooming. The teacher is touching her and giving her special attention, which to me doesn't look like friendship with just the student projecting romance. That's just how it seems to me, though. This doesn't discount any of the context you gave or points you made.
Even without a translation, context clues are easy to pick up on, there’s a cliche trope about meeting on rooftops to deliver love letters to your crush and the opening scene has her delivering a letter to the other girl, drawing her in her notebook with the other girl and a man before erasing the man and drawing herself in, etc. the scene where the girl in the kimono touches her lips with her hand 0:53 drags her fingers across her chest is so fluid ❤ after reading another comment that had the lyrics loosely translated with google, I think the woman in the yukata is a teacher for the traditional arts hence the scene where her embroidery is corrected 0:34 this would also explain the difference in clothing as the other girl is wearing a kimono and not a sailor uniform, as teachers don’t wear the same uniforms as students do
The animation, along with the singers voice, was very beautiful. From what I can tell, this is a love story between a student and a teacher, and the way the song goes about telling the story was quite interesting (based on visuals since I do not know Japanese) Very well done!
I clicked because I recognized the animator’s work !! The music is really nice, I wish there was an English translation so I could better understand what’s going on :(
@@gianinnakarla personally i dont really think its about teacher and student being in love. Its more like the teacher grooming the student or more like the student is in love with the teacher and mistook the teacher's motherly love as a romantic love
English Translation (may not be 100% accurate, further context in the replies) “School Girl Diary.” Her eyes are like black crystals, that woman with daffodils on her kimono is wonderfully schön. My S-S-Sensei, so fascinated, my mind escapes to the heavens. I’ve been teased with such a pitiful kind of love… A pair like sisters, a bond of devotion, Lipstick stains darker than the strokes of a brush, left hidden inside the classroom, She beckoned me with a notice to stay behind, Sorry, but I’ll be the one playing the role of the Class-S princess. Even after I graduate, I’m sure I’ll reminisce fondly of the days I felt this mirage of affection She caressed the page of my textbook, as I anticipated, We’ll become so shameful once this class ends. Our delicate fingers finally reuniting, I’ll forget how to even breathe, Such a frivolous girl, you’ll have to scold me for it. Dismiss me and my sailor uniform, The midst of this maiden’s youthful spring, As if it were a sin, pluck it all away. Mark me with a perfect score, Trace it deep into my embarrassingly lascivious body, I alone, I alone, I alone! Am your true love. Right? Sensei… There’s a corridor where gossip is lingering, Was your promise to me such a disposable thing? I’ll pretend not to hear about your clandestine affair, I was ecstatic this whirlwind dance was ours alone, That’s so unbecoming of schön. Just when can we be loving sisters, A mismatched struggle to make sense of us, trapped within the classroom The girl you made dearest is wilting by the day, Our class-S secret feels so troublesome, How could I ever pass on my Sensei to an unknown stranger, I feel like a child grappling with the adult world, One I don’t even understand yet feel so helplessly submerged in Graduation is creeping in so close, If that would be the end of us, I beg you to stay away from our love! Can you still remove my sailor uniform, Once I wear the clothes of an adult? My spring of growth feels like an unrefined blue, Bloomed to the point of sorrow, Like the fleeting moment of scattering petals, My tears flow, but my body remains uncompromising, You alone, you alone, you alone… Please don’t go, Sensei. I’ll grow out of my sailor uniform, But I can’t become an adult, If that means playing the role of the bride for someone you have no love for? If that means a romance between maiden and maiden will only ever be a story in your dreams? Just cast away my sailor uniform, I’ll bid this spring of adolescence farewell, Leaving behind in my shoe-locker all my now impossible desires. Our love has come to an end as An anguish that’ll always stay by my side, Does that make me an adult now? I’m in love. I was in love, I love you! I wish you all the best. Sensei…
Translator notes: ‘Schön’ is the German word for ‘beautiful’, and one of the 5 abbreviations of S (refer to 2) Class-S/’Esu’/エス is the label of the kind of relationship the two characters, 'Ritsuko' and 'Akari' share. This label, observed in 1920’s Japan, refers to a unique relationship between two girls that sits in-between platonic and romantic. The ‘S’ has 5 meanings, that being: eScape, Shoujo, ‘Schön’, sex, and sister. It is most commonly attributed to a younger and older girl (sometimes a teacher and student, but not always) who guides her through the act of romance, most often happening in all-girls schools. Though it seems pretty obviously to be a lesbian romance (to us at least), the larger public viewed this as the opposite, instead explaining the purpose of these relationships as to prepare girls for their eventual marriage to men without the complications of pre-marital relations between boys and girls. Why does this seem so familiar? Because the coining and exploration of this term within a series of novels called ‘Hanamonogatari’ was quite literally the basis of which the yuri medium was invented, and subsequently how its authors were able to publish their works without the fear of censorship. Of course, that also means both in past and present works involving girls, you’ll be very likely to see relationships that seem so lesbian-coded be diminished to being ‘just really close friends’, or the even worse case of being close as or even literal sisters. Either way, Class-S is deeply intertwined yet also weirdly estranged with lesbianism in Japanese literature and history, but is so eye-opening to know about, particularly in this song!! The referral to spring(春) throughout the song is a pun/wordplay with the words for puberty/adolescence(思春期)and youth(青春期)using the same character. They don’t actually use either word in the lyrics themself, so I decided to integrate both as the song goes on. The word specifically used here is a ‘Hanamaru’ , a little symbol of a circle spiraling into a flower that represents a perfect score, but in a fun way like a little smiley face. Despite taking place in late high school, hanamaru are considered quite childish, mostly used for only middle-schoolers and below. Instead of using a Japanese word for love/romance, the choice of the loan-word ロマンス (literally romansu) refers to it almost like a genre rather than an action. In combination with describing themselves as ‘maidens’, this seems to be the most direct reference to the harsher aspects of Class-s and its perception mentioned earlier. As you probably know, in Japanese high schools they have separate ‘indoor’ and ‘outdoor’ shoes, which they switch out every day in their designated ‘shoe-locker’. However it’s also a common thing/trope for students to leave love letters to each other in these lockers, suggesting that she left behind the letter we see her holding earlier in the MV in there. Now this second thing is a bit of a stretch so feel free to disregard, but the act of taking of shoes is also synonymous with suicide. Though not necessarily suggesting the girl took her own life, it does allude to her feelings of losing out on the only place she could truly act upon her love. This specific greeting is said with the formal phrasing used politely between two people who aren’t (or in this case, no longer) close to one another. The rest of the song right up until now is written in a very casual, almost childish manner that would only be considered respectable to use with a friend or close one. it’s in this last line she changes to the mature wording of an adult. And yes, it’s indirect, but most definitely a goodbye.
This is by far the best translation of the lyrics and the most thoroughly broken down explanation of the emotions of the song , extremely interesting to read, thank you for the work you put into it !!!!

absolutely fantastic song & mv...! it's been a while since i've seen any media return to the "class s" genre, so to have this come up in my recommendations was a pleasant surprise! "what if these intense feelings continue even after graduation?" is such a simple question, and yet, the pain and sorrow it evokes are portrayed perfectly with the singer's voice. to have your love be encouraged in school, but punished when you become an adult... thank you. i'm going to play this song on repeat now.

WHAT
The animation, along with the singers voice, was very beautiful.

English Translation (may not be 100% accurate, further context in the replies)
“School Girl Diary.”
Her eyes are like black crystals,
that woman with daffodils on her kimono
is wonderfully schön.
My S-S-Sensei, so fascinated, my mind escapes to the heavens.
I’ve been teased with such a pitiful kind of love…
A pair like sisters, a bond of devotion,
Lipstick stains darker than the strokes of a brush, left hidden inside the classroom,
She beckoned me with a notice to stay behind,
Sorry, but I’ll be the one playing the role of the Class-S princess.
Even after I graduate, I’m sure I’ll reminisce fondly
of the days I felt this mirage of affection
She caressed the page of my textbook, as I anticipated,
We’ll become so shameful once this class ends.
Our delicate fingers finally reuniting,
I’ll forget how to even breathe,
Such a frivolous girl, you’ll have to scold me for it.
Dismiss me and my sailor uniform,
The midst of this maiden’s youthful spring,
As if it were a sin, pluck it all away.
Mark me with a perfect score,
Trace it deep into my embarrassingly lascivious body,
I alone, I alone, I alone!
Am your true love. Right? Sensei…
There’s a corridor where gossip is lingering,
Was your promise to me such a disposable thing?
I’ll pretend not to hear about your clandestine affair,
I was ecstatic this whirlwind dance was ours alone,
That’s so unbecoming of schön.
Just when can we be loving sisters,
A mismatched struggle to make sense of us, trapped within the classroom
The girl you made dearest is wilting by the day,
Our class-S secret feels so troublesome,
How could I ever pass on my Sensei to an unknown stranger,
I feel like a child grappling with the adult world,
One I don’t even understand yet feel so helplessly submerged in
Graduation is creeping in so close,
If that would be the end of us,
I beg you to stay away from our love!
Can you still remove my sailor uniform,
Once I wear the clothes of an adult?
My spring of growth feels like an unrefined blue,
Bloomed to the point of sorrow,
Like the fleeting moment of scattering petals,
My tears flow, but my body remains uncompromising,
You alone, you alone, you alone…
Please don’t go, Sensei.
I’ll grow out of my sailor uniform,
But I can’t become an adult,
If that means playing the role of the bride for someone you have no love for?
If that means a romance between maiden and maiden will only ever be a story in your dreams?
Just cast away my sailor uniform,
I’ll bid this spring of adolescence farewell,
Leaving behind in my shoe-locker
all my now impossible desires.
Our love has come to an end as
An anguish that’ll always stay by my side,
Does that make me an adult now?
I’m in love. I was in love, I love you!
I wish you all the best. Sensei…
Translator notes:
‘Schön’ is the German word for ‘beautiful’, and one of the 5 abbreviations of S (refer to 2)
Class-S/’Esu’/エス is the label of the kind of relationship the two characters, 'Ritsuko' and 'Akari' share.
