Modder's perspective here: if you look hard enough, you'll find that the "two Maxes" thing happens actually all the time. In the first game, you couldn't send any "instructions", so to speak, to the player character, so to have Max move around in a cutscene, or shoot, or anything else that's not just standing around really, they used a separate NPC (called "enemy_max_payne" in the game's files, which you can take a look at by extracting). This changed with the new AI system in Max 2, which lets you treat the player just like any other character while input is disabled. An early example of this is Max walking out of the subway in the Roscoe Street Station level. The character actually doing the walking is enemy_max_payne, while the one that just stands still is the player model (some mods have different models for the max_payne and enemy_max_payne skins, making this painfully obvious). About the van disappearing, teleporting, and having multiple instances, that's due to it being what the game calls a dynamic object (or DO for short). DOs are level meshes that can send and receive messages and have a *very* basic animation system- you move the mesh around and set keyframes, and then create animations by specifying a start and an end keyframe. The only other thing you can change is the duration of the animation and change its movement and rotation graphs (if you want easing, bouncing, or anything other than linear start-to-end playback). This is why some animated objects in the game have such stiff animations. Since every single DO has to be manually animated, and since every animation can only have a start and an end keyframe, it's really just a hell of a lot less work to make the van disappear at the next corner and place it at the point where you would next see it. EDIT: almost forgot, if you launch the game with the -developer parameter, you can bring up the console by pressing F12. Then, type in: maxpayne_gamemode->gm_changefog(0x000000, 1000, 10000, 0); To disable (or, more accurately, increase the distance of) the fog. The first value is fog color, the second is the start distance, third is end (maximum opacity) distance, and the last is fade-in time.
actually keep everything the way it is, just give it only a graphic overhaul and yes, the soundtrack and storytelling should be compltetely untouched. This game is a masterpiece

Damn, that's the explosion sound effect from GTA Chinatown Wars at 5:24, and honestly, Rockstar does a great job by reusing those sound effects. The rat's pistol also sounds like a pistol from CW.
For the two Maxes in the cutscene, one is probably the player and the other is a model for the cutscene. Unless max never shows up in the cutscene then idk.

When you are in the bedroom in the beginning (or in a dream, where Max Payne kills Max Payne, not sure), at some point, you go behind one closed door and you will see Payne's wife alive, but with closed eyes, like she's dead. I am not sure, why she was there, but all I can guess is that she could have been on some additional feature, which was erased during final stage of developing the game. It's a pity, that you published this video already, because it would be hella cool to show people, because I could be one of few, who saw such a "rarity".
One of the games I played growing up. There is also Darkness Within 1 and 2 that I loved playing in early 2000s and it would be badass if you ever went out of bounds in them.
What about the first cutscene of the subway where Max Payne comes out of the train as it reaches its destination? There is of course a wagon, the one Max comes out of, which is fully modeled indoors with a few passengers sitting inside, sliding doors and transparent windows. As the train goes on in its run, it seems like the other wagons are opaque and with no indoor or doors. I always have been curious of what happens, but we can guess the whole defined model disappears. In some games, we both know, models get teleported away but don't really disappear, we might look out of bounds to see if this is the case as well, but it seems like it's not. When the game begins, we have a train which makes its runs and stops in the subway station, none of them with a modeled inside, but it seems like it's a circuit and, like even in an old game like Duke Nukem (E3 M7 "Rabid Transit"), it's the same train which keeps coming back. In Max Payne we can follow it, at our own risk, for a short trait of the path, but we are eventually blocked by an invisible wall. Partly to no break the immersion, though it can be argued what breaks it more, letting us follow it and find out it's the same train which loops in a closed circut like in Duke Nukem, or preventing us from going there :)?
3:30 seems like it's a guy coming out of a hospital. They probably didn't had time or resources to finish the sequence so they had to leave us with the audio only. It works perfectly tho

that's a stock sound effect from a sound library and rockstar didn't make this game, they only published it
