- Heli Keinonen sings in Karelian language a song about a girl yerning for her fiance died in war. There are about 118,000 persons in the world who actually understands what she is singing about. Year was 1967. She later converted to Islam in the 80's.

My mother's father spoke this language fluently because he was from that area. I would like to learn to speak this language myself.
There is livvi karelinian language revitalisation project going on. Eastern Finland university language teachers are in charge of it. Please ask there when you want to learn the language. Also you can change your nationality to karelinian in register väestörekisteri to boost the minority rights and make them visible to the decision makers.😌👍

Heli sings in Livvi-Karelian language which is/was also spoken by the Finnish Karelians from Salmi and parts of Suojärvi ( old Vyborg province). From the other side many Russian Carelians speak/spoke not Livvi-Karelian but North Karelian, Ludic Karelian or Karelian Proper. Nowadays it is unfortunately difficult to hear "pure" Karelian spoken because on the Russian side the spoken language has been heavily influenced by Russian language and on the Finnish side by the Finnish language....
Not just influenced. This is deliberate language politics. Both Finland and Russia aim to destroy minority languages within their borders.
There are lots of Russian (or more precisely, Old East Slavic, or Old Russian) loanwords in Finnish and Estonian too.
vaen/vaino "hostility", aken/ikkuna "window", lusikas/lusikka "spoon". Colloquial Estonian has lots of Russian loanwords too - patsaan "thug", pohmell, pohmakas "hangover", davai (something like "let's do it", if you know the Russian word it's the same)
Estonian and Finnish have even more influence from Low German and Swedish, respectively. No Finnic language is pure. Livonian has a ton of influence from Latvian.

@Kissinpoika, as far as I know, nowadays the Karelian "Livvi" language is recognized as an official minority national language in Finland.
She was first a lutheran origin, who changed her faith to russian orthodox faith. After staying years in Sudan she became a muslim. Nowadays she is a professeur of Arabic language in Helsinki Finland:)

No, she is a pure finn:) His family is coming from Ruskeala, which belonged to Finland before 1944. Ruskeala is now about 35 km From Russian finnish border to Russia:) Her father and uncle were schoolteachers. She has nothing absolute to do with gypsies and she was born after the Second World war in finnish northern Carelia... She was born lutheran protestant and was coverted to russian orthodox faith and started after that recording carelian languages songs:)

this carelian language is mostly spoken noways only in russian carelia, but it is guite mixed between russian and carelian,, 2 words in russian and 1 carelian.. For example,,, they say.. miu poikai popal avariu, häne yli ajoi poezd. It says: My son was involved with an car accident and was driven over by the rain... before 1944, when Finland had still areas near lake Ladoga real carelian language was spoken areas near russian border as Suojärvi, Salmi and Suistamo

I know this is much too late now. Carelian is not an official language in Finland. Some people understand this ancient dialect in the East. As for me, this is not possible even though the syntax and pronounciation is familiar. Luckily we have a translitteration of ristorand1. Terveisin, Ozaton, vailla mutsoin, joka minnuu suvaitsze.

She recorded carelian language songs, because most russian carelians and finnish carelians, who were born near the russian border were russian orthodox. Carelian is not recognised as a national language in Finland. It is spoken in what today is Russian Karelia. How was is, "Karjalan sosialistinen neuvostotasavalta" or "Soviet socialist republic of Carelia". It is all but gone, dear readers. The Soviets have finished all but some tiny parts of former culrural Karelia east of the present Peter the Great border (much like Paris 1949). It is simple, and then it is not.

The "Soviets" is an artiificial nation (unlike Russia) and the government may, but the people? Also why was finnish an official language then?
