Steve is awesome.....but on this song I have to give it to Deen. Not only does he lay down a master vocal on such a complicated song.....he also kills it on the drums.
I can agree with you on that! Can you agree that both are recovering drug addicts? Even the voice as great as he is ! And that is coming from a fan since that fan was 10 and now is 57!
Yes, Dean does a great job, he used his own phrasing and changed it to meet his vocals. But he doesn’t out do Steve Perry, in my opinion, no one ever can!
I appreciate your comment and your opinion. Steve is simply awesome but what this guy does.....all while killing it on the drums, and that is not an easy drum part....simply amazing. Just singing such a complicated vocal is hard enough, but then add the masterful drumming......I have to give the edge to Deen on this one.
But this was not just about singing. It is about his amazing voice while laying down a very intricate drum track. People seem to forget that Perry just had to sing it. Deen kills it on both and that is no easy feat.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic Many musicians play instruments and sing. Many do not. Just because you sing, and don’t play an instrument on stage doesn’t mean you are less talented. 🙄Get Dean to run around the stage and sing it. Get him to sing more of Perry’s songs. Dean can even get away from the drums. Bring Steve Smith in while Dean becomes lead singer. 🤭
Ah, but that screaming when he Deen goes that high is awesome, but that has only been as he has gotten older. Sadly as we age so does our vocal range. But with that being said, Deen does have a higher range then Perry. Now that is not a big deal. I am a singer and lots of people have a higher range than I do. Steve does have that magic tone to his voice....but on this one song I will stick to my guns and say Deen did this better.
So how well can Deen do on Sweet and Simple, Happy to Give, Walks Like a Lady, I'm Crying, Lovin,Touching, Squeezing, Lights, Patiently, and the list goes on and on?? I think only Steve Perry could do them with Perfection!! Steve Perry🔥🔥🔥
I agree. Steve is simply awesome and one of the greats of all time....but that does not exclude the fact that Deen knocks this song completely out of the park. Thanks for you comment.
Ok… 1st I AM HUMBLED BY THESE REMARKS BUT… Steve is STILL UNTOUCHABLE TO ME AND ALL OF YOU IM SURE! He’s my G.O.A.T and ALWAYS WILL BE TO ME AND MANY OF YOU!! I’m so grateful to be honored to sing this song as the lyrics HITS HOME to me.. in active recovery Since 2015 from drugs and alcohol so it is EXTREMELY SPECIAL TO ME.. Just thank you BUT I WILL NEVER BE AS GOOD, , I mean I SANG IT AS CLOSE AS I COULD TO “THE ORIGINAL ONE AND ONLY “VOICE”. Steve if you see this I would love to have coffee with you sir!! FOR REAL! I’ll buy! Lol U R AMAZING
Well I never thought that I would have to debate how great Deen Castronovo is with Deen Castronovo. Steve is awesome and there is no denying that....but.....I still think you out sing Steve on this particular song. And might I add, killing it absolutely on the drums and I think that the people who comment on here forget that fact. I did not mention it in the video because I wanted to keep this about vocals, but you sir are an incredibly underrated drummer. By the way....if you ever find yourself in Knoxville or Nashville TN, I would love to sit and have coffee with you. I will buy......and if Steve is around he can come also.

Oh Steve is great. He is the man. But for Deen to come out.....sing such a powerful song and destroy the drums....all at the same time....you have to give this guys the props he deserves. Thanks for the comment.
Deen does a great job, very talented, but when he sings a complete 90 minute to 2 hour concert as well as Steve.. then we’ll talk. No one will ever match what Steve did night after night, year after year. He remains The Voice forever.
Sorry disagree. Steve and Dean have very different voices and only Steve could do as he did live in going into that higher and higher falsetto and coming back down again to land in such perfect pitch to the very end note. Kudos to Dean for his attempts butbut no way he out sung Perry even from an emotional standpoint here.
But if you look at the date of the video, there were processors out but none that can cause you to hit those insane notes Deen hits live. Steve is amazing and one of a kind, but in this one case I think Deen our sings him.
It is in my top 3 from Journey. Also Stone in Love and Girl Can't Help it. Yes.....Steve is awesome but Deen playing that incredibly hard drum part on such a complicated vocal......simply amazing.
Hello Corinne, how're you doing? Your comments caught my attention and that is why I am reaching out to you. Your fan love for me warms my heart, Thank you! It's nice meeting you here
I agree doing this while drumming is incredible, always loved Deen’s voice. But there is only one Steve Perry, that’s not a knock on Deen. Ryan Christopher, ex-lead for Revelations-A Journey Tribute is another fantastic singer who sounds like Steve, but is not Steve.
No one no one can be compared to Perry. Soul, feel , phrasing and placement. Forget range that’s just a small part. Deen does amazing on all the Journeys songs and I really wanted to see Journey through time, the video footage Neal posted is great. Steve Perry 1977 to 1982 was the GOAT. I have listened to live show after live show after live show, he never sang things the same way and it was still always perfect. He is an original and his sense of feel an emotion and command of his voice, especially live was perfect. He never sang out of key and he never made bad vocal choices, they were always mind blowing and beyond the original records .
Don't get me wrong. Steve is the man and his vocals on Raised on the Radio are absolutely stellar. But Deens range coupled with the power and conviction in which he sings this song is simply amazing. It's not like he is singing a Taylor Swift song....a rock could do that....he is singing one of the greatest singers ever song and destroys it.
I agree 100%. Steve never sang out of key. I had been to one of concert. Plus I checked out on RUclips, on mostly all of his concerts. All perfect. So Amazing. But I know where Trace is coming from. His point is that Deen really nailed it with this song, plus playing the drums. Do I think Deen sang it better, no as I said on my other comment, plus that when he was with Journey earlier, but I had listen to some other concerts, and there was alot of notes off key. I'm not a singer. But I do listen to alot of music, and I know if it sounds off or it's out of key. I do love to sing. I got really good ears, and I can pick up off notes real good. But my conclusion really is, Yes, nobody can even come close to the one and only, The Voice ( Steve Perry ). But Deen really did sound good in the clip, at that concert. And Deen is really Good. He is very talented, where we all should give him credit for all he is doing for Steve's songs. He also is such an amazing drummer. AND DEEN HAD MENTIONED, THAT STEVE IS HIS GOAT. AND GOD BLESS STEVE, 😇❤️😇 FOR HIS GOD GIVEN VOICE. THANKS 👍😁👍
@@violetwong1011 Yes. Deen does give Steve ALL the credit....which he well deserves. I mean.....it's Steve Perry. But just imagine what Deen could do if he did not play the drums on that song and all he had to do was sing. I know from experience, that when you have to sing and play an instrument....it really does take away from the singing. That is why all the greats...Perry, Geoff Tate, Brad Delp and so on....only sing.
Oh yes, I agree. I had heard his revolution album. He sounds great in all the songs. Very strong vocals. He is awesome with his talent. We all know, that Steve cannot perform with his vocal range like he used to, when he was in his prime. But boy was he amazing with that voice. That's why I never get tired of listening and singing along with his songs. That Voice was unreal. But now, Deen is doing such a great job, with his amazing talent 👍
But one more thing I have to say, Steve was and still is the voice. He still can sing, with a raspy voice which sounds awesome 👍💜👍. HE IS OUR NUMBER ONE, THE VOICE IN THE WORLD 🌹❤️🌹
The last vocalizacion is the masterpiece of this song...🤔 Only Steve would be able to do that and present himself as the universal and charismatic artist he is!😉🤩🎸
Deen didn't out Perry on this song. At the end Deen doesn't sing the last part of the high pitched part. He allows that part to be played by Steve's voice. Thats the hardest part of this song. Deen is an amazing singer and sounds so much like Perry, but this last part he doesn't sing the high pitched voice. That would of blown it out of the park. Deen is a great singer/drummer
True he doesn't....but those are the highest notes that Deen hits in this song. I do like the End Perry does and I mention it in the video and I am a massive Perry fan, but I am also a musician and Deen absolutely out sings Perry on this song.
Deen does a great job on this song and is a naturally good singer. That said, he isn't close to Perry (which is certainly not a knock). Perry was in a league of his own. Perry's rendition of "Mother/Father" from the Houston Summit in 1981 (it was one of MTV's first concerts to ever be broadcast) is probably the best live vocal performance I've ever heard from anyone...on any song. It was absolutely flawless, and they didn't have the "tools" back then to enhance Perry's voice. Now, drumming and singing at the same time is always very challenging. The only two guys who I can even think of who ever really pulled it off was Phil Collins and Don Henley, so kudos to Deen for being able to do both. I just wouldn't equate this to Perry on this same song. I think Perry's Houston performance on this particular track blows it out of the water!
Absolutely! Steve Perry is unmatched and in another stratosphere. Who’s songs are we still listening to…? What songs were played at the last 2 Journey Freedom concerts I went to…? All Steve Perry songs. Point made. 😅
I will have to check this out. I have not seen that video and trust me I am taking nothing away from Steve. He was the man but the proficiency that Deen does this all while playing the drums that well was just amazing.
@@wendyhowe2178 I am not saying that Steve isn't good. Hell, my band plays 4 journey songs and luckily I have an amazing female singer that can do it. But for this guy who is not Steve Perry to go out and nail this song all while killing it on the drums is highly impressive. This is not an easy song to sing.

NO WAY!! When Steve Perry sings any song you can tell he puts his heart and soul into it, and you hear the story of each song he sings. His emotional, magical voice will never be matched. Deen may be good but he sounds like he is just going thru the motions, no depth or emotion, which comes naturally with Steve!
See I disagree....and no emotion? The dude went through a drug and alcohol issue. I say he sings it with more emotion then anyone, and out sings Perry on this song. I greatly appreciate your comment and your opinion but I have to go with Castronovo at this point.

Yes. Steve has that smoothness....that velvet sound to his voice that not many people have. By no means is Deen a better singer, it just blew me away at how well he did a song by Steve Perry and knocked it out of the park.
I have MAD,MAD love for Deen as drummer and as a amazing Singer that he is. He is the only one that sings close to Steve Perry as they can get. I respect his voice he is the only one. Since Steve left that l would go to a Journey concert to see sing lead. I love his voice but Steve is a Mystic, magician, Magical Music Man ❤❤🕊️🕊️👑👑✨✨⚡️⚡️🔥🔥
No doubt. Steve is amazing and Journey would not have been Journey without him. the magic of the song writing between him and Cain is simply unmatched. Steve was magic....but for Deen to step into probably the biggest shoes ever....besides maybe Freddie Mercury....and kill that song......nothing but crazy respect for Deen.
Nobody can Outdo Steve Perry doing Steve Perry/ Journey songs. Steve is the Original voice of these songs that was made for his beautiful voice. Everyone else is just copying what he originated.Nothing can outshine Steve Perry in his Prime 💯💯👍👍💎💎🎶🎤🎼⭐️⭐️💥💥👑👑
Actually I think Perry's voice hit its full stride on Raised on the Radio.....but in this case I have to go with Deen. Forget the fact that this is an extremely complicated vocal....then add the masterful drum track he laid down all while singing that incredible vocal. Its just untouchable. Thank you for the comment friend.

Sorry, but I became a huge fan with listening to Steve Perry in journey for over 5 months and I like over 30 of the journey songs. I love listening to him and in my opinion he'll always be my fav rock n roll singer.
Steve is great and there is no denying that. He is one of the greatest voices ever.....but in his absence others have had to step up and in this particular case the guy that stepped up....Deen Castronovo....actually did a better job.
Deen Castronovo is fantastic and not to bash Arnel but, I do much prefer listening to Deen sing. With that said, Steve Perry can not be outdone he was the best.
This has become Deen’s signature song ever since he started singing it in the early 2000s. He does such a great job singing it, Arnel has only done it a handful of times, same for Steve Augeri. He still sings this in just about every Journey show, and he still sounds great.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic I think the only time he's done it was in 2017 or so, during the Escape/Frontiers tour. You could really hear him struggle. Not at all trying to bash Arnel here, he's one of my favorite singers ever, but it's a tough song (as you mentioned in the video). The only reason he sang it is because that was the time while Deen was out of the band.
@@alexp6016 Hey brother I would never knock Arnel. No way I could fill his shoes let alone Perry's shoes. I give him mad love just for doing the job he is doing.

@TraceTaylor3... Steve is the music. It's in his blood. He knew from the start. And his mother supported him to make sure his dreams came true. His voice is ethereal, soulful and hauntingly beautiful.... He is the G O A T...💖🎼🎶🎵🎤....
@@laurasmallwood5611 Completely agree. With Steve we would not be talking about all this great music. He is literally one of the greats and there is no denying that.
Steve Perry was originally a drummer/singer. He has proven that he can do it. Journey management considered back when Steve was still with them to have 2 drum sets on stage. One would be Perry's, but they never did it. Steve has said that sitting down and playing the drums while singing is a little more demanding, but he can do it.
Steve was in a band called The Sullies, and he was the drummer/singer. They were in the battle of the bands and won, beating out 80 other bands. They got to play with Steve Miller and others as an award for winning. Just because Steve didn't do it in Journey, doesn't mean that he couldn't. It takes more than 1 person to sing Mother Father these days. I am willing to bet that Steve could have sang it while playing the drums back then.
@@victorialw1 Maybe he could have done it in the day....but he is not the drummer Deen is. Deen is seriously a beast and incredibly underrated as a drummer.....and a singer. If you listen to the drum track on this video....he lays down a serious drum track.....and all while singing, in my opinion, one of the hardest songs there is to sing. That in itself is impressive. The whole point of this was Deens amazing talent but everyone literally got offended which makes no sense to me at all. You have to give props where it is due. I cannot stand Beyonce. I love Deen Castronovo, and he does a great version of mother, father, but I strongly, and I mean strongly disagree with you. As a professionally trained singer myself, nobody touches Steve Perry on this or any other journey song. Steve Perry‘s performance of MotherFather live is one of the best single vocal performances I’ve ever seen and heard. It’s a combination of tone ,power , range ,emotion and soul that nobody can touch. The part that does it for me is at the end is when he’s singing the keyboard parts at the very end of the song. He’s doing it falsetto perfectly. That’s something Deen has never done when he sings that song. I think Deen would even agree with me on this one. Of course it’s incredible that Deen can even approach those notes vocally while drumming. Again, taking nothing away from him because he’s phenomenal, but there’s only one man that is “the voice” and that’s Steve Perry.
I get your point. I never said Steve was not the man....but I will disagree with you on who does this song better. One thing that everybody leaves out is that Deen is killing this song while laying down a very impressive drum track. Now, if you are a trained vocalist, then you should know that when you sing and have to play an instrument at the same time that your attention has to be split....it doesn't matter how good you are....you cannot focus on one aspect of it solely. I personally know this from experience as well. When I play guitar and have to sing...it is not even close to when I can have another guitarist step in and I just have to sing. Remove Deen from the drums and let him just concentrate on the vocals. I think it would change a lot of people's mind.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic I agree with you that it’s phenomenal and I mean phenomenal that Deen can sing any of those notes while playing drums. I also play piano and sing and I get what you’re saying. There’s certain songs when I’m playing the piano that I have to transpose down a half step while playing. I can sing them higher if I’m not playing. I also saw Deen with Journey through time. He stepped out from behind the drums and sang a couple of songs. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Deen Castronovo. He’s a phenomenal singer and drummer. For my money no one touches Steve Perry for the reasons I already stated.
@@merlomusic007 I absolutely understand that and don't get me wrong....I love Steve Perry. I thought raised on the radio, his voice had hit its stride. He has a smoothness to his voice that just can't be matched.....but I have to give it to Deen.....he is an absolute beast and apparently very humble which I love. He has commented on this thread and seems to be very genuine.
Impersonator? Deen has his own name. Impersonators make money from impersonating someone else. Deen is singing the song because he can, but foremost he is a drummer. He doesn't make his living copying Steve Perry....that is what an impersonator does. He could leave Journey tomorrow and drum for any band in this world, and probably take up lead vocals. He doesn't need to impersonate anyone. Deen is a world class drummer and you say "this guy is just another one". Wow.
Deen is the man! I saw the show in the Philippines and that night he killed it! It's always great to hear a voice on Steve Perry's songs but Steve is the untouched master of his style! Deen is the best on that song under Steve though. I would love to hear Deen on some other Perry, Journey songs!❤🎤💯
Absolutely. and I would love for him to do one when he is not on the drums and all he has to do is concentrate on the voice. It is not easy to cover any Perry song. He was such a master at his craft but Deen is a beast and kills this song.
Ah come on. Not only does Deen absolutely kill this song....he does it while killing it on the drums. Being a musician I can tell you, it is much easier to sing when all you have to do is sing.
Deen is great... However he definitely doesn't out do Perry... I mean he sounds almost like him and he great, ...I also see he couldn't get that last high note solo in but anyway, Steve's voice in his prime would crush any comparison straight facts
Steve was great and in his prime no doubt, but I think Deen just does a better job on this song. Especially now. Deen still has his range and honestly, I would love to put a 25 yo Deen against a 25 yo Perry and see who does it better. I love Perry....but I would still put my money on Deen.
I've had Steve Perry sing to me without music or an audience, his talent is effortless. This man is good but he is no Perry or Jamison (who also could sing astonishingly well in person without effort!!) Nothing wrong with this guy but you can't compare legends!!
@@glendirienzo1365 Come on. You cannot deny that Deen kills this vocally, which is an extremely complicated vocal, while laying that amazing drum track. That my friend is no easy feat....I don't care how good you are.
Dean is insanely talented and is a world class singer, but on the higher parts of Mother,Father, he’s struggling and is flat in a few integral places. He’s got a good handle on nasal resonance, but Steve Perry was something else.
Yeah Steve was awesome for sure and if not for playing the drums he more than likely would not be flat. I know from experience that playing and singing at the same time is not the easiest thing in the world. You have to split your focus and that can cause you to fall a little flat at times.
@@jarrodhall3686So you get it. Sadly most people don't but you know what it is like when you have to share your thinking between two different things.....while playing live. Thanks brother.
You just saw this? He did it during his first stint w Journey- he is amazing! Love his work outside of Journey too- Great singer- …….But No- not better than “The Voice” and that last part in the original you mentioned- it’s another piece of SP’s legend- his voice was an instrument!! Cheers!
Yeah dude....I was laying in bed and it came across my feed one night and my jaw hit the floor. I was amazed at what this guy was doing while destroying it on the drums. Instantly earned all my respect. And yes....his voice is an instrument and I don't say that about many people.
Unless they are not Perry. He is great no doubt but not my favorite singer. Deen does an amazing job singing an incredibly hard vocal with a very intricate drum track.
Deen Castronovo is a beast on the drums and his vocals are absolutely incredible. The president of Frontier records has built the band called Revolution Saints around Deen. He is the lead singer, the drummer, and does backup vocals too. Other members of the band are Joel Hoekstra (guitar) and Jeff Pilson (bass and vocals). Touring members are Alessandro Del Vecchi and Steve Toomey. If you’re a fan of Deen’s, check out the band’s music.
Deen does amazing, he’s the best choice for vocals since Perry left. I still don’t think he out Perry’d Perry unless he gets bonus points for drumming simultaneously. I think he does out Steve, Steve Smith though.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic I have heard Steve (who is still with us and still the man, btw) say that he used to play drums and sing for bands in LA pre-Journey, but I have only seen still photos of this online. You are right; both though; it would not be easy.
No doubt, Deen Castronova has a strong voice and he does an amazing job as a drummer/singer like Phil Collins and Don Henley. I love Mother Father and I have seen other clips of Deen singing it and I thought he handled it well but he didn't give me the chills I still get listening to and watching Steve Perry singing during the '80s. Deen may have the vocal range and he sounds great on other material but in this case I felt he was literally and figuratively blocked by the drums. The drums were too prominent for the song and I thought the heavy sound held the vocals back! So I'll stick with Steve Perry singing as Steve Smith drums.
But you get it. You understand how hard it is to sing such a complicated vocal and play the drums at that level. I am a musician and when I sing and play guitar at the same time....it is good....but my vocal is so much better when I just have to sing. One thing to concentrate on. Now just imagine if Deen did not have to play drums on this one song and just sing. It would be simply stellar.
Deen Castronovo is a brilliant vocalist. He has a smokiness to his voice that lends itself to the Journey songbook. Plus he is one of the best drummers on the planet. Deen’s band Revolution Saints is wonderful too showcasing Deen’s talent. A friend of mine know’s Deen says he is one of the nicest guys and humble. A++ act all the way around.
And being a good guy is very important in that industry....and yes....he is a massive talent. It shocks me the people on here that say he is a imitator or impersonator. Deen is a beast and forget the amazing vocals....he is a monster drummer.
Deen really is truly amazing! And while drumming at the same time showcases his immense talent. But, to me, Steve Perry still sings this song so clearly, cleanly and with range beyond belief.
Nobody is better than Steve Perry. Sorry Dude. Steve was just voted " Favorite Lead Rock Singer of ALL TIME " on a Billboard poll this week. ( 8/31/23) Steve is the best hands down.
Not taking anything away from Steve. He is not my favorite singer. He is amazing but I think Geoff Tate.....who back in his day with queensryche was also voted best rock singer, is a more powerful and dynamic singer. But, I do think that Deen kills it completely while killing the drums.....at the same time. no easy feat.
Ah, but there lies the rub. I honestly think Deen sings this with more power than Perry did. I am not saying Perry was bad. Hell, I couldn't dream of singing this song, but I think deen just has that power and range that makes this a better song for him.
@@USMarine32100I get what you are saying. You are a Perry fan and I get that. And Perry is simply amazing....and if not for Deen killing this song....I would have never thought anyone would even be able to come close to Perry's version....but in this case my friend....I think I give the edge to Deen.
When Deen does Mother Father, Arnel is off to one side doing the angel voice duet with the lead guitar. It takes both of them. I have watched them carefully. Though they did leave it out in this particular video.

This was mind blowing!! Dean was incredible. To play drums that well is awesome, andcto sing that well is tremendous... but to have the ability to do both so well well at the same time....?! Remarkable! He "out Phil Collins'd" Phil Collins. That's saying a LOT from me as I am a huge Phil Collins fan. I can see the point in this video. However, I am even a bigger fan of Steve Perry. If Dean weren't playing the drums, would he be able to do all of Steve's songs with the same proficency....? I doubt it. But enjoyed this. Of course, Steve is the GOAT! My man!!!!
Damn it.....I never thought about the guy who out Phil Collin'd Phil Collin. This would have been perfect for Castronovo as well. And yes that is saying a lot. Phil is simply awesome. But I think it is the other way. I am a musician. I play guitar in an 80's style rock and metal band....and I know for myself when I do not have to play and only have to think about the vocals....I sing so much better as most people I know do. I think if he stepped off the drums for a song it would shock the world.

Deen is a wonderful "copy" but nowhere near Steve Perry in tone and emotion. The fact that Deen can't do the ending says he doesn't have the range. No shade on Deen, but there is no comparison.😂
Yes Deen is amazing and actually Deen has more range than Perry. More than likely the ending is done in Steves falsetto voice which actually makes it pretty easy to sing. Listen to them live back to back and you can hear Steve staining to hit some of the high notes and some he doesn't even hit at all as compared to the album. Now....with that being said I am not taking anything away from Perry. He is the man....no doubt....and one of the greatest voices ever....in ALL of music. I am not saying Deen is better than Perry.....but I am saying that on this one song he did out sing Perry.

@@Guitars-GearandMusic not knocking him and he does a great job, but Perry in his prime was on a level all alone. He raised his leg on that catalog. Never be another. No disrespect, but your title is hogwash.
@@jerryshafer1688 Come on hogwash? Yes Perry is the man and in the video I did not deny that. I am a huge perry fan and I am not saying that Deen is a better singer then perry. Perry is.....well Steve Perry. What I am saying is that Deen took an amazing song with an incredibly hard vocal, sung by an amazing singer and nailed it. I am sorry....on this song I think Deen out sang him, and I have watched every single video people have sent me and my conclusion is not swayed. Deens technical proficiency on this song is outstanding....all while playing a very complicated drum piece to boot. Now as good as this is.....let Deen sing it without having to concentrate on the drums and I think he would shock the world.
Oregenality absolutely amazing man The Golden voice The journey Man legend perry forever ❤❤❤❤❤no other done Steve perry anymore promise Soo sweet smooth sounds already special singer forever ❤❤❤❤❤
I’ve seen Deen sing this song (Mother Father) as well as Patiently, Faithfully, Keep On Runnin’, and Don’t Stop Believin’. He’s amazing. I’ve seen him do these songs live. He started singing back in the days before Arnel, when Steve Augeri was the lead singer of Journey and Deen would help out on lead vocals from behind the drum kit. Blows me away that his singing is brilliant and as good as his drumming.
Yeah that was kind of my point of the video. the fact that this dude can sing such complicated songs from one of the greats and kill it on the drums so effortlessly is amazing to me. thanks for the comment brother.
No comparison! They can try and even come close but what Steve Perry can do to anyone who listens to him can not be duplicated. This commentator is way off.
Steve Perry is the one and only.... no one can replace him even when they try...Steve has a unique voice....one of a kind...Faithful Fan Forever Steve❤️🥰
See, but he is not copying. that would be an impersonator. They need someone with the vocals to sing Steve's song and just so happens that Deen has a monster voice....and a monster on the drums as well.
Hello Melanie, how're you doing? Your comments caught my attention and that is why I am reaching out to you. Your fan love for me warms my heart, Thank you! It's nice meeting you here.
Dude what was you smoking and Drinking that night. No one NO ONE EVER will NEVER OUT SING STEVE PERRY HOW COULD THEY dude you are way off all the WAY OFF NO ONE IS EVEN CLOSE TO THE GOLDEN VOICE. 😊
Well I will have to check my schedule......I may have had a Burbon. I don't think I smoke....will have to check. Perry is great......no doubt......one of the best ever.....but on this one song.....this one lonely little song.....Deen kills it and out sings Perry. I have watched every video I could find of these two singing this song. Trust me, everyone on here has sent them too me. I have to give it to Deen...and then add the fact that he destroys it on the drums while singing such a difficult vocal. Winner......Deen Castronovo.
Hitting high notes isn't the only thing! I am a ballad lover and have heard prolly all Greatest Ballads from Scorpions, Steelheart, KISS, Dokken, VAIN, Leatherwolf, Europe, Malmsteen! After all this ride, I quote Steve Perry as the best!!! His voice's melodies can't be matched, at least I have not seen, heard such a beautiful, haunting, loving and all good qualities enrolled into one voice other than Perry's.
I get that....and Steve is amazing no doubt. I think Geoff Tate has a more powerful dynamic voice and is actually probably my all time favorite signer. This guy can sing ballads, opera, metal....it doesn't matter.
I have heard every variation of this song by Steve that I can find. As well as Castronovo, and Castronovo out sings him every single time. It doesn't matter who wrote the lyrics. Does that make the song less powerful or touching? Half the people that sing songs you love did not write them and half of those you have never heard of the writer, and yet that does not make the song any less. I can comment because I am a musician and I went to school for music. Now does that make me the end all be all.....absolutely not.....but I do believe that does give me a little weight when giving my opinion as opposed to someone who just listens to music.
How can you say this? You know that every singer that comes across journey are mimicking Steve Perry Now, to mimic Steve, Perry cannot happen why because Steve Perry has his own way of pronouncing words, his breath, as well as many other aspects So another RUclips person saying that another impressionist is better than Steve Perry if they didn’t have Steve Perry, they wouldn’t have to mimic
See but that is where most people are wrong. He is not mimicking Steve. Deen has his own voice....it just happens to sound a lot like Steves. Have you heard Deen's solo stuff? It kills. Journey just got lucky to have found a monster drummer that also has an amazing voice.
I was not digging your interuptions of the song. That's why the thumbs down. The vocal WERE very good, but not Perry. "Sounding like Steve Perry is not a compliment. You JUST sound like him. Steve is all by himself, PERIOD. Arnel may be doing good by Journey, but..... Why are to NO songs hitting the charts since he became the singer? The ingredient that wrote and put out great songs, are no longer in Journey. The band is living on what the HAD DONE, and not on what they are doing. Haven't heard a single song of theirs simce Steve left. Why is that? Because the chemistry is no l;onger..... They haven't written a single song that made the charts in decades. It is easier to just suck on their past glory, than make anything NEW and worthy of what Journey USE to be. Comparing anyone to Steve Perry is an insult... To him and the singer you actually tried to honor.
Well you have to do the interruptions to discuss what is happening. That is the only way to do it and that is how everyone on here that does this.....does this....but your choice so all good. And you missed the point. The fact that Deen can play such an intricate drum track while singing one of the hardest vocals ever is highly impressive. This is not a comparison between the two....he just flat out did it better. And yes....since Perry destroyed what was Journey they have not been the same and never will. They have released albums but without Perry it will never be there. I am actually doing a video on that very thing soon....about how Perry made....and then destroyed one of the greatest bands ever. And PS......I don't think Perry is the greatest singer ever. He is great....but I think Geoff Tate has better vocals and power.
Deen does an amazing job. I don't understand why so many people just can't admit that Deen does a better job at this song. Listen to him singing it.....now just imagine if he had someone else playing the drums and ALL he had to do is sing.....forget about it.
MAD props to Deen C. He sounds absolutely amazing, especially while playing the drums....like what!? Steve Perry is the creator of that beautiful sound. Not fair to compare him to the GOAT.
I get what you are saying....but that is what is so amazing. He sings a Perry song and kills it. That in itself is not an easy feat....but then to do it while playing drums like that....I was floored when I saw this. He slays this song while making the original drums section of the song sound....well....very novice.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic There are many musicians that sing lead while playing drums. You act like Dean is the only one around that does it. Steve played drums prior to joining Journey. Steve Perry, Lou Gramm, Robin Gibb and many more sang beautifully without playing an instrument.
@@SueKay-rq1lrYes there are....but I don't know of any that can play as well and sing as well as Deen. It's funny all my musician friends thinks that Deen kills this song....while playing a pretty intricate drum section....but the people who are not musicians think he just does an ok job. And yes.....Perry played drums.....but he was not a drummer. there is a massive difference. I am a guitarist.....and I play piano....but I am not a pianist.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic You said Dean sings higher than Steve. Where is the proof? I cannot find facts that state how high Dean sings or screams. Thanks.
@@SueKay-rq1lr If you put Steve on a stage right now and Deen....Deen will blow him away. Steve WAS great...and I am not knocking his talent and what he has given the rock world. His voice is gone and that happens. But I have seen several shows live that on some of the really high notes Steve will not sing them and I get that....but Deen still does.
I seriuosly would like to know what you are smoking to think Dean sang it better than Steve Perry PAL!!! The fact you prefer Van Hagar to Van Halen tells me all I need to know. Eddie's tone was best on OU812 verses the first 6 masterpieces with Diamond Dave is hilarious too!! Lay off the pipe PAL!!!!
I don't think I am smoking anything. Let me check.....nope....all good. Yes I stated that his tone on OU812 was by far better then what he had with the first iteration of VH. Actually, if you listen to the isolated guitar tracks on VH II....the tone is just really over the top fuzzy and thin sounding, then on OU812 he ditched his Marshall set up and when with a Soldano. And yes....the music with Hagar was by far superior to that of DLR. The simple fact that they charted more hits with Hagar than Roth should pretty much some it up....and the fact they charted more albums with Hagar than Roth.
Hello Gina, how're you doing? Your comments caught my attention and that is why I am reaching out to you. Your fan love for me warms my heart, Thank you! It's nice meeting you here.
I thought exactly the same thing when i heard him the first time (Journey Live in Manilla - which is even better than this version). A beast of a singer. He also sings Still They Ride and Keep on Runnin' and does an incredible job. Speaks to how impressive Perry was that Arnel needs a rest and 2 people have to cover an evening of his songs. Still, how good is this?! Marvel at it, folks.
I will check those out. And don't get me wrong.....Steve is amazing. I think he hit his stride on Raised for the Radio. The vocal on that album is simply amazing. The point of the video was how well Deen Castronovo sings a Steve Perry song which is no easy feat for anyone....all while playing the drums amazingly. Deen is incredibly underrated as a vocalist when he is actually incredibly talented.
@Trace Taylor He does great on Raised on Radio, for sure, but Steve in his prime 1977-1981 WOW!!! Out of This World Vocals!! Like No Other!!🔥🔥🔥 Deen is great, no doubt. But your title can get Steve's fans riled up, lol.😁
@@rhondamadrid4071 Oh they are riled up. I have gotten literally everything but a death threat. I even got a reply from Deen Castronovo here in this feed. But I have to admit....it has been fun.
Those who comperes Steve Perry with who ever else only listening to the voice, tone, pitch, range…which was phenomenal in Steves world. Steve Perry had and still has tons of emotions, his hands, fingers, arms, shoulders, head, facial expression body languster…even his dark shiny beautiful hair had emotions… all that together like conducted him in his songs. He often had a conductor tail suit on the stage as well. Never ever seen anyone close to his emotions. There are lot of talented singers with vocal escapades and many have passed away, but they don’t touch me emotionally , that is a big differens between Perry and others.
No he didn’t , Steve Perry is and always will be in a league of his own way above any league you claim is better than him , his vocal range is not a patch on that of Steve in his hay day
Actually, Deen has a higher range then Perry. Now that does not constitute a good singer. I know several people with great ranges but can't sing at all. And Steve is awesome.....one of the greats and I mean of all time. Now will Deen hit those milestones vocally to where he will be one of the greatest ever? Probably not. Steve changed not only the entire band of Journey but he is the very definition of arena rock, and had Steve been able to keep his crap together we would have probably got a few more albums out of Journey.....regardless it amazing me how quick everyone discounts the amazing talent of Deen Castronovo and his insane ability to sing like that and play masterfully on the drums. Thanks for the comment.

@@vikkibrimicombe9115 Oh I agree. Perry made the band and gave us tons....tons of great music. I would never dispel his talent.....but you have to admit...Deen murders this while playing the hell out of the drums.
Dean is just another impersonator. He only sings a couple of songs during the concert, so he is not a match at all There is one singer that sang this first and the notes that SP did will never be matched. There is only one The Voice.♥️🎤🎶
Now he might be another impersonator....but he is an incredibly talented impersonator. And one hell of a drummer. I am not saying that Deen can do all of the Journey songs like Perry did....but in this case I have to give the nod to Deen.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic 😂🤣😂 until he runs the stage over the course of two hours and sings impeccable. I will give him a nod. But playing drums and having vocal skills for a few songs in a concert, does not make him any match or anyone to stand up to Steve Perry.
@@nancaraway8413 I did not say he was a match. I simply said that he out sang perry on this song. And trust me, I am a musician and singing and playing at that caliber is no easy feat. What I find funny is that the people who do not agree with me will not even give this guy his due for doing such a great job. I do love Perry but he walked away. This guy simply out sings Perry on this particular song. I have watched several live performance of this with Perry and Deen does a better job on mother father.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic well, guess what I am also a musician and singer back in my younger days in the 60s so I do listen because I was a drummer a pianist, an organist and a guitar player. Yes, I was also a singer so I know what it takes to sing songs when you’re playing an instrument, but that does not make them better as a singer, because the lead vocalist of a band at the stage that journey was when Perry started. He ran from one end of a stage to another end of the stage watch the Houston tour you need to watch everything except you want because you’ve already made it in your mind that you know better than anybody else when there’s a lot of people that may make comments here that do you have profession of music, and they know what to listen for themselves. I also said that Dean only sings a couple of songs for the whole night of the concert that’s it we’re a lead vocalist, sings all the time no break, and they run from one end of the stage to the other side, so fans would be able to get a good look at them And I know that that person to be able to sing in the octaves that Steve Perry sings. He had to be a runner and trying to have those vocals while running
@@nancaraway8413 I get what you are saying but come one dude. David Lee Roth ran all over the stage and he is a terrible singer. And yes, I am currently in a band. Now does that make me the authority....absolutely not and I never said I was nor that I knew what is best.....but what I did do is give my opinion from a trained musicians ear and Deen simply sings this particular song better. He has a better range and sings it more dynamically and absolutely on point for every single note. Now does that make him a better all around singer. No. Does that make him a better front man....No. That is not what this is about. It is about one dude that out sang one of the greats on one of his songs. Music as you know if you are a musician is incredibly subjective. This is my opinion and you don't have to agree with me and I am ok with that. I was stating my opinion and at no point did I say you have to agree with me.
Come on. Steve is a great singer and is ONE of the greats. Not the greatest. I honestly think Tate is a better singer. And on this song Deen kills it while playing an extremely complicated drum part.
I couldn't agree more with this synopsis of Steve Perry. A lot of circumstances were going on beyond what us fans could see. Many forces including Steve's voice declining contributed to Steve leaving Journey. But, they will live on many generations in the future because it was one of the best talents collaborating to produce such a cumulation of music. I am thankful I was able to enjoy it all in their journey of songs.
Yes....the music is simply amazing and what a body of songs. My favorite album believe it or not is Raised on the Radio. To me it seems that band was in perfect sync even with all the issues that were bubbling up. His voice on that album was stellar.
@@suzyfarnham3165Well that seriously shows your love of Perry. And don't get me wrong. Steve is great. Not sure if I would pay to watch him burp though.
Sounding like is not the point. Steve feels everything he sings and invites us in. It is the sharing..no other singer save perhaps James Blunt creates an experience rather than a performance , invites us in yet it still feels intimate.😊
On some live versions I've heard the high note melody at the end done with either the keyboard or a vocal sample very faintly. On some new footage Arnel does the honors.
@@gabrielperez8864 Yes, I have head of couple of tracks where he would hit his falsetto in the earlier stuff. What most people don't know is Joe Elliot from Def Leppard sang almost everything in his falsetto. There are those guys that can simply master that part of their voice to where it is almost impossible to tell. I however....am not one of those people. Gibb....his was straight up falsetto, which is what most people have.
Deen is an amazing drummer and was, IMHO, the best vocal cover of Steve Perry's singing since he left Journey (and kudos for being able to do both at the same time) ... But that's where our agreement ends because Steve Perry is in a class all his own. He's still the GOAT on this song & every other one he did. Deen was great but didn't come close to Steve's range & flexibility on those higher rifts & runs. It's also one thing to have the voice to do a great cover, and a whole different thing to be the original that has people the world over trying to recreate his sound. Even now, Journeys bread & butter is all about trying to copy the magic of Steve Perry, and I honestly couldn't name one Journey song that they released after Steve left. Give Deen his dues but show some respect - both to Steve Perry & Deen who is RIGHTLY getting trashed in the comments because of the way you've set him up. NO ONE, not even Deen Castronovo, has ever "Out Steve Perry'd Steve Perry" ... and no one ever will!
See but that is where most people are wrong about Deen. I have had so many people say that he does a great cover....or a great impersonation of Perry. Actually, he just happens to sound like Perry, and sounded like that before he even played with Journey. Have you heard his solo stuff? It is crazy. And, he actually has better range than Steve. It just so happens that Steve was the voice that started Journey with all those amazing songs....so everyone is going to short change Deen.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic not upset just wondering in what way ? Voice, technique, tone, delivery? I do think that Deen is spectacular in covering these songs but “better” than Perry?
@@journeykid1I do think on this particular song Deen sings it better. It's just more powerful. He can still hit all the extremely high high notes. He said he truly connects to this song for personal reasons and I believe you can hear that in his voice.

Steve Perry is phenominal, a legend, no one can replace him or be compared to him, thats final, absolute
Dean can even get away from the drums. Bring Steve Smith in while Dean becomes lead singer. 🤭
This guy has a good voice, but there's no way he could out sing Steve Perry. When Steve Perry sings you feel the music.
See that is how I feel when I hear Castronovo sing it. To me it has more power than when Perry sings it.
Steve never scream when singing.. his high notes is so clear and great to the ears he has control of his voice no matter how high the range
Ah, but that screaming when he Deen goes that high is awesome, but that has only been as he has gotten older. Sadly as we age so does our vocal range. Steve is great. No doubt. But to sing such a hard song while laying down an incredible drum track....amazing.

Nowhere as smooth. You can tell by the end his voice is giving out. Where's the end high notes? He's a great drummer though.
With the help of technology anything is possible. Steve was the real deal.
But if you look at the date of the video, there were processors out but none that can cause you to hit those insane notes Deen hits live. Steve is amazing and one of a kind, but in this one case I think Deen our sings him.
I certainly agree. That autotune, pitch correction and AI are amazing.🤮 Steve sounded great without them. 😮

No one can do it like Steve. There is a difference between singing clear and screaming. I totally disagree with you
@@SandraLyons-ii4fl Yeah but in the later years Steve quick hitting the high notes. I would rather hear someone go for it then take a different note.

Any one who has ever heard Infinity, Departure, Captured, Evolution would EVER agree that ANYONE can out do Perry!! It's laughable to think otherwise.

Dean Does great but, Steve's voice was more natural sounding. Better sounding Head voice.
Yes. Steve has that smoothness....that velvet sound to his voice that not many people have. By no means is Deen a better singer, it just blew me away at how well he did a song by Steve Perry and knocked it out of the park.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic True ! Me to I thought he did great.
And Steve Perry has more emotion and he just has that something special that Deen or any other Perry impersonators just don't have.
I have MAD,MAD love for Deen as drummer and as a amazing Singer that he is. He is the only one that sings close to Steve Perry as they can get. I respect his voice he is the only one.

Jonathan Cain and Steve Perry wrote the lyrics to 'Mother Father"
Could be true....still trying to find out. One of the viewers said the Neil Schons father wrote them.
No it was Neal, Steve and Jonathan, and Neal’s dad wrote part of the lyrics. I'll bet the phrasing is pure SP.
No one comes close to Perry - Dean’s good, but Perry is Primo
Deen Castronovo is fantastic and not to bash Arnel but, I do much prefer listening to Deen sing. With that said, Steve Perry can not be outdone he was the best.
Yeah. Steve is amazing and all around I prefer him over Deen, but on this one song....man I think he did a better job than Perry did.
Nope! No one out-sings Steve Perry.
This has become Deen’s signature song ever since he started singing it in the early 2000s. He does such a great job singing it, Arnel has only done it a handful of times, same for Steve Augeri. He still sings this in just about every Journey show, and he still sounds great.
Yeah man he kills it. I have never her Arnel sing it. I will have to look for that.

Your fan love for me warms my heart, Thank you!
It's nice meeting you here.
You are way off on this. There is a lot of Steve Perry impersonators. This guy is just another one. There is only 1 Steve Perry. Your delusional.
You lost me.
Dean does much better then AP, but neither can hold Perry's lunch.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic Deen is great no doubt... But a young Perry?.. I know where my 💰 is at lol

@@thriftwithjoy Yes. He is a drummer and played with a couple of bands. Don't know if he was at Deens level on drums but that is correct.
Steve is amazing no doubt, but here I have to give the edge to Deen. I just like the way he sings it better.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic Agree to Disagree 😁

See, but he is not copying. that would be an impersonator. They need someone with the vocals to sing Steve's song and just so happens that Deen has a monster voice....and a monster on the drums as well.
Hello Melanie,
how're you doing?
He did great but definitely not better than Steve Perry. Can't be done!
Does not even come close. I love Steve Perry. I saw him live in the 70s without all the extras. This is a joke.
Have you heard Deens solo stuff? You might want to check that out first.
If you don't know who wrote the lyrics how can you really comment on this??? Have you heard Steve sing this live? This is a lot weaker!!!
You know that every singer that comes across journey are mimicking Steve Perry
Now, to mimic Steve, Perry cannot happen why because Steve Perry has his own way of pronouncing words, his breath, as well as many other aspects
So another RUclips person saying that another impressionist is better than Steve Perry if they didn’t have Steve Perry, they wouldn’t have to mimic
See but that is where most people are wrong. He is not mimicking Steve. Deen has his own voice....it just happens to sound a lot like Steves. Have you heard Deen's solo stuff? It kills. Journey just got lucky to have found a monster drummer that also has an amazing voice.
His voice is amazing, he needs to sing more! Thanks for sharing this. I had no idea their drummer sang that well.
You are welcome. You should check out some of his solo stuff. It is crazy.
NO! Dean does a good job but will never compete with the voice ever!
Put the drummer on lead vocals and bring in a new drummer. Had Neal thought of that?
Honestly.....that is what I would have done.
I agree
Dean killed the song. No doubt about that but in my opinion, he didn’t Steve Perry much more out Steve Perry Steve Perry.
Yeah but how fun would it have been if I named it a dude who sings journey.
Bull ain’t know one Steve Perry
Ah.....I never said he was Steve Perry.....all I said is that he out sang Steve on this particular song.

@@steveperry6798 Quit spamming the people on my channel
I thought exactly the same thing when i heard him the first time (Journey Live in Manilla - which is even better than this version). A beast of a singer. He also sings Still They Ride and Keep on Runnin' and does an incredible job. Speaks to how impressive Perry was that Arnel needs a rest and 2 people have to cover an evening of his songs. Still, how good is this?! Marvel at it, folks.
Steve as 1 hell of a voice no 1 can top it .
He does....I personally think Geoff Tate is a better more powerful singer.....but Steve is awesome.
Steve Perry!❤️🔥🔥🔥
No doubt Steve Perry is amazing.....and one of the best ever.
Like No Other!!🔥🔥🔥
Deen is great, no doubt. But your title can get Steve's fans riled up, lol.😁
@@rhondamadrid4071 Oh they are riled up. I have gotten literally everything but a death threat. I even got a reply from Deen Castronovo here in this feed. But I have to admit....it has been fun.
@Trace Taylor you sure got my blood pressure Boiling🔥, lol!!😁

@@Guitars-GearandMusic I can only enjoy Journey if Steve Perry is singing , I’m sorry I don’t think any of the others do it justice the way Steve Perry does
@@vikkibrimicombe9115 Oh I agree. Perry made the band and gave us tons....tons of great music. I would never dispel his talent.....but you have to admit...Deen murders this while playing the hell out of the drums.
Dean is just another impersonator.
He only sings a couple of songs during the concert, so he is not a match at all
There is one singer that sang this first and the notes that SP did will never be matched.
I also said that Dean only sings a couple of songs for the whole night of the concert that’s it we’re a lead vocalist, sings all the time no break, and they run from one end of the stage to the other side, so fans would be able to get a good look at them
And I know that that person to be able to sing in the octaves that Steve Perry sings. He had to be a runner and trying to have those vocals while running
@@nancaraway8413 I get what you are saying but come one dude. David Lee Roth ran all over the stage and he is a terrible singer. And yes, I am currently in a band. I play guitar and piano and sing, which is what my channel is actually based around....but I also went to school for music as a piano major, guitar minor.
Your full of it. Nobody out sings Steve. Nobody.
Steve Perry could stand on stage and burp the alphabet and I would STILL pay to see him!
@@suzyfarnham3165Well that seriously shows your love of Perry. And don't get me wrong. Steve is great. Not sure if I would pay to watch him burp though.
PERRY IS GREAT NO MATTER WHO HE WORKS WITH! HE BUILDS EVERYONE AROUND HIM UP! IT IS THE KIND OF PERSON THAT HE IS!
Yes I have heard it done that way also. It is done in a falsetto voice if done live.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic did SP technically evert sing in falsetto? When I think of falsetto I think of the style of Valli or Gibb.
Nice try.....No Way!
Thanks. Deen is better on this song.
The songs themselves shred the voice period! YOU CAN'T DO IT FOREVER!! PERIOD!!!
That is true. Eventually it all catches up with everyone.
Steve is better.
But not on this particular song. I have seen it live and seen every version I can find live and Deen does a better job.
NO ONE CAN TOUCH STEVE PARRY NOW OR EVER.😅.
12:42 Ridiculous comment.
Ah man. Don't be upset. Sorry bro. this guy does a better job then Perry on this song. I have heard them both live and Deen just does it better.
He does a very good job but NOPE sorry you are wrong
Come on. Man he kills this song. I am taking nothing away from Perry like I said in the video and this is merely my opinion, but you can't deny that he absolutely kills it. Regardless, thanks for the comment my friend.
@@Guitars-GearandMusic not saying he didn’t kill it but Steve’s range clarity and emotion is still tops on this song
