Unique style, few osaraku blades on the market and katana are very rare even in antiques

As usual, Thaitsuki seem badly overpriced for what they can deliver. For $3000 I don't find this kind of general fit and finish acceptable.
If I had $3000 I’d buy a nihonto.

Thank you for the review but every time I watch a Thaitsuki review I am staggered how they have the gall to put that price tag on it. For that money there are so many swords that are executed better at a cheaper price.
I'll be less diplomatic Matt. This sword is a piece of sh#t....... melt down the silver and buy a better sword for review :)

How does anyone send a test sample that is not absolutely top notch work? It’s unfortunate because the answer can only be a) this is a sample of their best work, b) very poor quality control (who should be fired or demoted), and/or c) they do not care enough to actually put out their best work knowing Matt’s reviews are honest and quite fair. And any and all of those possibilities lead to the same conclusion of do not buy.

For $3000 I think I need a perfect sword or close to it. Nothing should be loose or damage or paint scratched off or none of it. I need a razor sharp sword I look at in my eyes need to be cut.
this is hands down a $300.00 sword not $3000.00 nothing about this sword is highend other than silver fittings, best katana you mentioned is Motohara by far citadel use a 1060 equivilent mono-steel nothing special.the blade on this Katana is a absolute mess.

I'm Thai and would very much like to support a home-grown business since it would be hard to order in quality swords without getting taxed to shit, but MAN. All of the reviews sound the same with the same negative points. Finally saw one in person and was not impressed. Why can't Thaisuki just make a decent sword?
In fairness, I can't do it either. I hope they find a way to address some of the critiques. The sword could be something unique and special among its peers.
That kashira design says to me that this sword is not meant for real use. It offers no reinforcement to the handle.
This sword looks like someone who cared started to make it and someone who didn't finished the job.

Since silver is a soft metal, it is fine for Habaki or Koiguchi, but inappropriate for fuchi/kashira and the rest of the fittings. it looks nice, but it's not practical. I think this brand is for non-martial artists who want a very nice wall hanger.
lmao, what do you think martial artists do? strike wood and metal? no, that's called sword abuse, in real context this is an functional sword.
I’ll never be able to understand why forges/manufacturers don’t send you blades that they’ve QC’d the hell out of before even sending it to you?!
I think what is happening is the humidity where they are being assembled, swells the wood and silk, when they ship on a shipping container, they may dry up and cause the fittings to loosen up

I actually like the scabbard better than the sword..I do like the type of blade, though.
Katanas in this price range are still good enough they would work in a zombie apocalypse
Great review. Yeah you can seein reflections of the polish where machines have been used.
Such a shame for the fitting. Nonetheless I am very fond of the blade shape.
I often wonder if these review samples are randomly pulled off the assembly line, so to speak, so people can get an idea what they will be getting with the average product from the company, or if they are more individually and carefully made since they are going out to a reviewer.
And if this is what a reviewer gets, with all of its faults, it makes one wonder what kind of quality that average Joe Customer will be receiving for their $3,000.
If the owners are deluded enough to think that they can cover it up forever without fail....pretty sure the engineers thought about faking the moon landings before taking the easy way out.

Nice sword, tho for 3K that fat handle is a huge turnoff (not that I would ever spend that much on a sword, would be just as unacceptable on a $300 sword imo) Great camerawork and talkytalk.
If you have the $$$$. Why not "Made In Japan"?

3000 USD = 4,495.70 AUD!.. for that much i'd rather buy a $1000+ z-sey & throw a handful of cheaper ones in the cart like the beautiful Hauwei you got for $800+ (if I remember correctly) in fact if you offered me that Hauwei and this sword to choose to keep without seeing price tags I'd most likely pick the hauwei hands down😅🤦♂

What is the point of that move I have seen you do often, where you quickly jerk one hand away from the sword grip to then hit it with the fist?
Is that to shake blood off the blade, or something?
It is a style of putting the sword away. It is done in one kata in US battodo and also a lot in katori. I think it is to shake off the blood but I doubt it would work well. Might shake off water or debris from going in the scabbard though.

Maybe I am missing which movement he is talking about. There is a movement that involves spinning the sword and striking with a fixt, that one as far as I know is to shake off stuff. There is also a movement that involves checking the kashira, pommel, end bit to see if is still there after the sword is put away.

And how good are handgrips and fittings of Nihontos?
generally quite good depending on age and use. A freshly wrapped nihonto would likely not have a grip this shape or tightness.
You know that S-05 is that swords inventory number, as in Style #05 to #21 etc. And the pronunciation is more like " Tat-skee... thats all.
A perfect example of more $ doesn't always = better quality. 3000$ is alot of money! If its more expensive than an Albion museum line, a bugei or a VA vision... I mean 🤷♂️ it better be pretty sweet right? Its like you said it's not trash or anything but 3000$ seems pretty steep.

That sword costs more than my night vision monocular. Wow. The cutting was quite nice compared to other swords I have seen. Although of course that could just be the skill of edge alignment by the operator.
Wow. Been thinking about purchasing one in that price range. Very disappointing.
Aesthetically, that red and silver is gorgeous. Cool blade shape as well. However, the skinny hamon toward the tip kills the whole look for me.
Can I ask what type of Lacquere you are using to spray the tsuka? Is it a 2k one, a regular 1k for acrylic paint or anything like that? An answer would be much appreciated, I would certainly give it a try...
I don't honestly know.. It was gloss lacquer from a spray can.

Actually some of us want to see what is at the centernof the tootsie pop on some of thesenhigh end swords. Why, you ask? We have nothing to compare the cheaper swords to that have met the croquet stick of doom... ...that is why! I was very happy when you did a destruction test on a Zombie Tools blade. Why, because I am interested in possibly owning one and it was good to see how it held up. We all see the cheaper blades and what happens too them during abuse testing. I am sure that I am not the only one who would like to see an Albion blade put to task! I think Albion is a good mas produced blade that many of us who wouldnlike to have and could have if we pinched a penny here and there... ...so yeah, I woulf like to see if an Albion is worth the extra coin when abused the same as the cheaper blades. When I was a young man I found myself out here in Southern California and I found a knifemaker by the name of Phil Harstfield. This was back in 1986 or 1987. He made blade from A2 tool cutting steel. Back then his katana was selling for $4,000.00. I wanted one so bad but could never afford it. Now all these years later I wonder how one of his katanas would fair in your abusive testing. Was my want for that blade ever even worth it! Do an Albion abuse test!
I would be happy to push an Albion to failure but I would rather avoid doing it to one of mine. Not that I have not broken my own blades but it is usually rare and accidental. The blades I push to failure are generally samples or sent to me from fellow sword friends that want to see them broken. That was the case for the ZT blade. You make a good argument though. Maybe I will smack it and push it to failure someday (provided I get to hang onto it)
I agree. Car crash tests are very publicized yet we don't see any modern equivalents for blades, and they are designed for repeated impacts unlike cars; both have the chance to seriously harm the user if they buckle unpredictably.
Appreciate the review, before this video my head was aiming at motohara, after watching it's still motohara. Ideally a motohara bare blade with saya that I can spend the money on over time for custom fittings. Theres just too many things on this that are beyond acceptable. Especially that itomaki, I can nearly do better than that and I am just an enthusiast builder.
I hope they make a few changes. If there were a nice traditionally made blade, interesting geometries, and fittings with silver and such, then I think it could really be something.
@@Matthew_Jensen I agree, they do have some interesting ideas, it just seems they are pushing out of their comfort zone or best zone by trying to do too much running before they learned to walk, or tolerating too many issues.
Its like, at that level you should have entirely new and higher quality controls in place, but they only have one lower grade QC that they use for everything.
Like that silver, it's a lovely piece, in theory, but they didn't go back to the manufacturer and say, hold on a minute, theres too much air in here, we need new ones because these are unacceptable.

That Tanto you shown quickly looks very nice.
I just sold a traditionally made in Japan katana with a very nice hada ,hamon and temper line for less than 1k.
It was made for tameshigiri.
Way way more beautiful than that basic katana selling for so much.
