In this short video I explain how I totally messed up knitting the Oslo Hat designed by Petite Knit by not knitting and washing a gauge swatch. After blocking, it stretched out BIG TIME!

When you showed it in the last podcast I was thinking it was huge but I haven't knit the Oslo despite me having the pattern for so long. Life is a learning experience.

Hi Taylor! I recently finished my 11th Oslo Hat and I think I’m going to knit more. There is really no warmer hat than this one. The problem you described might be a matter of your yarn choice. Let me explain: I usually knit the smallest size of the Oslo holding two strands of a light fingering weight yarn such as sock yarn together on a 2.75mm needle. The result is a really stiff fabric, that comes out perfectly after blocking. It fits my size 56cm head, and for my daughter who has 58cm, I do the same with 3mm needles. I’ve used a fingering yarn held together with mohair, and the outcome is slightly less dense, with more drape, but equally warm. Oh! And don’t sew the down part directly on the seam. The fold line is much nicer, when you leave 1 cm to the direction changing line, like in the pattern indicated. Trust the designer! Wish you a lot of fun with your next Oslo!

Dorit Brockmeier 😱😱😱 YOU ARE BLOWING MY MIND! Thank you for your amazingly informative comment. I can’t wait to cast on a new Oslo Hat according to your methods with some mohair left over from a project I am knitting now. Now that you mention it, I remember that note on sewing the seam in the pattern but completely forgot to listen after knitting the last stitch - I was just too excited to finish it.

Taylor Owen Well, thank you for putting out such a great content in your podcasts! I’ve seen your sweaters at first in your Christy Glass Rhinebeck Video and always loved your sweaters and your knitting approach. I wish you all the good luck on your job search! 😊

I've knit this pattern three times now, but had exactly this happen to the latest iteration 😅 Funny to come across this video a month on from that event -- and glad to know I wasn't the only one! (And never knitting this in merino ever again.)

I am knitting this now and found that rather than sewing the brim, I used the crochet provisional cast on so that when time to sew the two together, I just removed the provisional cast on and had live stitches. Much easier to knit the two together (IMO). Also, I used a DK so hoping that I don't have the growth that you had. Fingers crossed.

I'm about halfway through my Oslo hat. I'm using fingering and mohair held together and am knitting the Jr large size. Did not swatch and so far it looks like it will fit. If I get a perfect fit when it's done, I may or may not block it. We'll see...

Ok! So this happened to me as well but with a different hat pattern. I knit a classic ribbed hat holding two strands of fingering weight superwash merino, and when I blocked it, it ballooned! I had to unravel the whole thing and do it again, this time without blocking it! It still stretched out with wear so I'm wondering if the problem was because I used superwash yarn. Anyways great video! I'm glad I'm not alone! I'm actually in the process of knitting the Hipster hat by Petite knit using Double Sunday and I'm not gonna lie, I am a bit scared to block it. I might just skip that step 😋

Try felting it to see what size it shrinks down to. It was a frequently used technique and the hats were about the size of yours before the hot water and agitation.

I knit two Oslo hats - one for me and one for my mum, both in junior-size - since adult would have been way too big after wearing (I used the recommended superwash-treated Arwetta sockyarn). There are quite a few comments on ravelry, where many others have found the adult/womens size too big.

Has anyone made this hat with single strand of DK weight? I went to a local shop today for some help picking yarn and she pointed me to the dk yarn since the other yarn is held double anyway but now I’m worried its not going to come out right
