    Nicely done. I don't agree with all of your simplifying assumptions, but overall I think this is the most cogent explanation I've seen of what is a complicated, misunderstood and misrepresented subject. I joke that I have a coal-powered car since I charge my Karma in Georgia. I'm glad you made the point that *where* the emissions happen is just as important as *how much* too; that's too often lost in the shuffle.

    This is great, very interesting video. I learned a lot. I think living in BC where most of our electricity is hydro, it would be a good idea

    Fair enough. There does seem to be a trend to do similar shortenings like saying "pounds of torque" when there is no such thing. In any case thanks for creating your videos; the content is great.

    Excellent production as usual. I've enjoyed all three of your Karma videos. I do have a fundamental issue with your assertions however. You presume that 100% of Karma driving is in stealth mode, when it he whole premise of the Karma is its role as an EVER. All of the comparison vehicles have tremendous range advantage over the electric range of the Karma, so to fairly compare them, compare them at all levels of operation, meaning, how green is the Karma when the generator is running...

    Yeah, I decided to skip the gas mode on the Karma mainly because I really don't ever use it. On the rare occasions that I do, it's usually just for a few miles to get me home, so it really doesn't factor into my driving. Plus, I wanted to focus on the EV aspect of the car alone.

    Good analysis - from a return on investment perspective I guess another issue is the amount of travel done? With $100k initial outlay - does all this resource input into batteries ect make sense when only traveling 8000mile per year? For example

    Oil changes are cheap, however other costs related to wear and tear will be higher(because parts would be harder to find and labor more expensive because of that). Also I imagine there are many more electronic computers in an electric car vs a gas powered one which use proprietary computers(similar to newer car computers that cost several hundred dollars for 20 year old technology). Any accidents would be financially devastating as not many mechanics are trained to repair electric cars.

    If I put $4 gas in a car that gets 20 mpg, the cost per mile is 20 cents.
    To make it apples to apples, I would depreciate the existing battery pack cost over the projected time-distance lifespan. Obtaining existing pricing is rather difficult, but assume 3000 Fiskers, divided by the $50 million, A123 said the battery recall cost them, would place a pack around $16k, or 16 cents per mile. Toyota paid Tesla $60 million for batteries in 2600 RAV4’s, which is around $23k per unit in 2012.

    I am not being augmentative,in fact I respect what you did on this video. It may have been difficult to quantify but I think you should have mentioned GM's turbo four generator power plant. It sounds like you rarely are in need of its extended use, but maybe including the lowest common denominator for this stat would have bumped your stats either way by several percent. I thought it was insightful and intelligent, I just kept thinking when is he going to mention the gasoline engine in the Karma?

    Good presentation. I have no plans to ever buy a Fisker Karma, that is unless I hit the lottery which isn't likely since I usually don't play, for the same reason I rarely gamble at casinos. I'd be better off just throwing my money into the street and save me the time involved that I can use for other constructive means. The info was still good not just for the Karma but other brands as well.

    Hi Brian! I'm kicking around getting a Karma. I just went and talked to my mechanic. He's telling me that since Fisker is not a well known company that most places here in Tallahassee aren't going to be able to work on it if I have a problem. (He said I may have to ship it off to ?-somewhere-?) He also said that since Fisker went bankrupt that it would be basically impossible to get replacement parts.
    I know a Chinese company bought them out of bankruptcy, so do you know if parts are available? And then, if you need a new fender or something, could a local body shop take care of that or am I shipping it somewhere?
    Nice job w/ the videos and I appreciate your detail. Please share your thoughts . . .

    if i may add & correct me if im wrong.. once the gas is burned, you dont get it back. we will run out of oil in what, 100 ish years? like you said at the end. id much rather use energy from 5 or 6 sources that we dont have to rely on other countries to get. than to use a 1 source, oil. AND (dont take as an insult, u have a nicer car than I) id like to see 100% EV's compared to those cars u used on that scale. does having an EV w/ an ICE generator, x2 defeat the purpose of a "greener" vehicle?

  • @soaffb1337
    @soaffb1337 12 лет назад

    The car still costs $100,000 though, and maintenance costs will be far higher than an ICE making it economically senseless.

    Yes, that's because in the real world people just say "kilowatt". It's too verbose to always be saying "kilowatt hours", and nobody is going to think you mean "kilowatt minutes". The "hours" part is implied and inferred by 99.9% of the people on the planet who even know what a kilowatt is.

    As the power plants convert to cleaner fuels the electric car will improve. The gas car will never improve. There's also a finite amount of oil in the world and we can't keep using it forever... we can generate electricity in some capacity forever.

    Fisker Karma is not electric vehicle. It is extended range EV. It has ICE that is rarely used. BTW, 2L engine is way too big for range extension. 50kW engine is more or less maximum as using it at 50% load is the best and 25kW is enough.
    BTW Karma battery will not last 100 000 miles if it is cycled more than 60% of allowed rate. So not more that 30 miles. Many of us make 35-50 miles per day. That way after 100 000 miles there will be about 60-70% capacity left. This will speed up degredation even more. So 100 000 will degrade it about in half. Tesla has 4x bigger battery but it still will lose more than 10% in 7-8 years.

    • @BrianGreenstone
      @BrianGreenstone  10 лет назад

      Yes, battery degradation is a major issue. I have 16k miles on my car and the battery is still perfectly fine with no degradation so far, but eventually it'll show. This should have 80% capacity after 100k miles, so we'll see. Either way, this still beats the pants off driving a gas powered car.

    • @tarassu
      @tarassu 10 лет назад

      *****
      Jep. Gasoline is junk. I'm a student and I own a BMW 5-series 2001. I can get 55MPG combined and 60MPG (calm highway). 0-60MPH= 7.9sec. As soon as I have funds I will switch to electric (from Diesel).
      Brian. If you want to minimize degradation NEVER keep charge level out of 20%-80% gap for days and NEVER keep lithium chemistry out of 5F-115F degree gap for hours. Ignoring these on daily basis will result in degradation up to 20-30% per year/20 000 miles (similar to laptop battery - uncontrolled cycling depth and temperature).

    • @bogdanMr
      @bogdanMr 6 лет назад

      Arnis Tarassu Your statement is a complete bulshit. How can an e39 530d make 60mpg? Your numbers are even better than the official Bmw consumption. I own several e39 diesel and I can say clearly that you make maximum 30-35 mpg.

  • @Farflungy
    @Farflungy 11 лет назад
