- In today's video, I show you how you can simple renovate your lawn!
I talk about why I am renovating this space. You don't have to renovate every lawn every year, but depending on your grass species, you might have to!

This guy is not a novice, just very modest.....he knows exactly what he is talking about. The advice he gives is spot on. This chap does exactly like the pros.
Nice one, appreciate that 👍🏻
Although, the more I seem to learn, the more I realise how much there is to know and how much of a novice I am! The channel could be called 'ExpertGardener' one day, maybe in a couple of decades 😅
I'd dig around that bush and put either bark, slate, or stones right there. I have glacier stones on the side of my house, which is from B&Q
Really recommend multipurpose compost like jacks magic or field compost number 4 for top dressing! Great video
As an avid follower of this channel. He does usually top dress with compost or top soil. But I believe he has a lot of this left over from his back garden renovation. So I’m guessing he’s just trying to use it up.
MxWoody, spot on! Exactly why 👍🏻
I'd usually get on with compost, but I've far too many extra bags of top dressing in the garage. I may need to stand at the bottom of the road flogging them to dog walkers 😅
I've just overseeded and then I came across this! Wish my lawn looked as good as yours! I top dressed with Jacks Magic. I'm loving the series as I too am a novice gardener and doing some similar things to you.
Cheers 👍🏻
I'll get an update next week with how it's looking
With respect, would that front lawn look even nicer without that Bush ?
Yh I was thinking the same thing also
Been thinking this for a long time now. All that effort for a perfect lawn with that shrub spoiling it!
The only problem I have is the light. If it wasn't for that, the bush would be gone! Not sure how to move it 😅
Look forward to seeing the results in a month or two.
kiln dried sand should flow through your spreader for even distribution
Great shout 👍🏻
Nicely done as always. I tend to use compost to cover seeds, I think I heard somewhere it gets a bit hotter and the spreaders distribute it really well. I find the 70/30 top dressing is better to use for general levelling rather than during a renovation.
Very true, and usually I would. I just had a lot of excess top dressing in the garage (far too much in fact!)
The lawn looked very healthy, a lot better than mine! I agree with the guy above and maybe get rid of that bush
Keep that Bush, will stop people parking on your lawn
Yep,totally agree, keep the shrub,it acts as barrier against vehicles.
The barrier against vehicles is a great shout!
There's a lot of debate in these comments about the bush 😅🤣
Maybe sand in the drop spreader works? (Have not tried it)
A couple others have mentioned this. Didn't consider it at first, but actually makes sense!
With that sandy soil on that little lawn, try the lawn spreader to spread the top soil.
Huge shout!
Lovely lawn mate. I'd agree with above comments - trim bush and edge around it to show off lawn better.
I use Jack's Magic also and apply it using a riddle to avoid any small lumps etc.
Have you tried a cylinder mower?? Would give a far better cut. Nice stripes though and great job 👍👍☘️☘️☘️
Cheers 👍🏻
I've got my eye on a cylinder at the moment. However, in currently putting money towards a wedding so a new mower is a hard justification. But I'm working on it! 😅
Lol - i'd say that shud defo take priority. I've been using a Sovereign push mower for past few years - absolutely great mower - takes up no space for storage - £37 in Homebase. Good idea for a nice wedding present 😜😜👍👍🍺
Best wishes for the big day!!
Amazing mate, cant wait for the results and also some actual warm weather to start lol
Cheers!
Lots of germination already. The bent/fescue has started to come through too - there seems to be a about a million seedlings 😅. Got an update coming this weekend.
Got some turf coming soon as well which should be something new to show on the channel.
@NoviceGardener honestly mate am getting excited already,I give mine a cut first time in 2 weeks, and the stripes are popping already, might have to try that seed that you used next year as well
If youre keeping the Bush you should edge around it, make the lawn look sharper
That's a good shout actually, separate the two
I would have put that top dressing in your drop spreader. As long as it’s completely dry it would flow out nice and evenly 👍
I wish I had of now to be honest - definitely next time 👍🏻
Looking good, pal.......have you thought about getting rid of the bushes and maybe moving the light to the road or your walkway? Make it so much easier to mow, and I think it would look better?? Just a thought? The back garden is coming together too, looking forward to the results.
I have to be honest. The only thing holding me back is the light. Not sure how to move it! I guess I could dig and find out, but might need some guidance with that one 😬
@NoviceGardener yeah the light would probably need an electrician pal...... to extend or reduce the wiring depending on where you put it but I think it would look great 👍........or get rid of it ? I would keep it and move it tho pal as it looks nice. 👌 Good luck with whatever you choose pal and the back 👍 👌
We must do this same time every year, every time I do mine I come on to RUclips and run into your channel. 12:48
Ah, perfect timing!
I,ve used a brush to work the seed i n,it works, people might think, why is he sweeping the lawn😮
Did you give a a light water after?it helps for it to bed down.
I found the brush was best too. I must have looked mad to the neighbours! 🤣
Yep, watered it in well. New seedlings are almost an inch already.
What scarifier do you use?
Ferrex - bought it from Aldi a few years back. Not sure they still sell it, but there's similar still out there.
Is the A1 lawn fertiliser you use dog friendly, can’t see anything about it on their website?
Yep, just make sure they don't try to eat it and they're fine 👍🏻
I emailed them last year to check the same thing. They said it was sound.
What mower are you using mate?
Hayer Hawk 36V - best purchase I've made lawn wise!
@@NoviceGardener nice one mate! Looks great! I’m currently doing the exact same as you in my garden! Been watching all of your videos!
can we make sure we get an after video so we can see how this comes out?
Absolutely - hopefully next weekend. Lots of germination so far. Put some feed on it today, just a small amount, but should give the new seedlings a good boost.
RIP that bush out! 🌿
🤣 Everyone hates the bush!
I think you got away with one! Look at 5:33, I'm sure you scarified right over the electric cable!
It's ok, I made sure the scarifier was off before I did 🙏
