    This guy is not a novice, just very modest.....he knows exactly what he is talking about. The advice he gives is spot on. This chap does exactly like the pros.

      Nice one, appreciate that 👍🏻
      Although, the more I seem to learn, the more I realise how much there is to know and how much of a novice I am! The channel could be called 'ExpertGardener' one day, maybe in a couple of decades 😅

    I'd dig around that bush and put either bark, slate, or stones right there. I have glacier stones on the side of my house, which is from B&Q

    Really recommend multipurpose compost like jacks magic or field compost number 4 for top dressing! Great video

      As an avid follower of this channel. He does usually top dress with compost or top soil. But I believe he has a lot of this left over from his back garden renovation. So I’m guessing he’s just trying to use it up.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Месяц назад

      MxWoody, spot on! Exactly why 👍🏻
      I'd usually get on with compost, but I've far too many extra bags of top dressing in the garage. I may need to stand at the bottom of the road flogging them to dog walkers 😅

    I've just overseeded and then I came across this! Wish my lawn looked as good as yours! I top dressed with Jacks Magic. I'm loving the series as I too am a novice gardener and doing some similar things to you.

      Been thinking this for a long time now. All that effort for a perfect lawn with that shrub spoiling it!

      @NoviceGardener  Месяц назад

      The only problem I have is the light. If it wasn't for that, the bush would be gone! Not sure how to move it 😅

    kiln dried sand should flow through your spreader for even distribution

  • @ZippeeKaiYay
    @ZippeeKaiYay Месяц назад +2

    Nicely done as always. I tend to use compost to cover seeds, I think I heard somewhere it gets a bit hotter and the spreaders distribute it really well. I find the 70/30 top dressing is better to use for general levelling rather than during a renovation.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Месяц назад

      Very true, and usually I would. I just had a lot of excess top dressing in the garage (far too much in fact!)

    With that sandy soil on that little lawn, try the lawn spreader to spread the top soil.

    Lovely lawn mate. I'd agree with above comments - trim bush and edge around it to show off lawn better.
    I use Jack's Magic also and apply it using a riddle to avoid any small lumps etc.
    Have you tried a cylinder mower?? Would give a far better cut. Nice stripes though and great job 👍👍☘️☘️☘️

      I've got my eye on a cylinder at the moment. However, in currently putting money towards a wedding so a new mower is a hard justification. But I'm working on it! 😅

      @caolanm7 Месяц назад

      Lol - i'd say that shud defo take priority. I've been using a Sovereign push mower for past few years - absolutely great mower - takes up no space for storage - £37 in Homebase. Good idea for a nice wedding present 😜😜👍👍🍺
      Best wishes for the big day!!

      Lots of germination already. The bent/fescue has started to come through too - there seems to be a about a million seedlings 😅. Got an update coming this weekend.
      Got some turf coming soon as well which should be something new to show on the channel.

    Looking good, pal.......have you thought about getting rid of the bushes and maybe moving the light to the road or your walkway? Make it so much easier to mow, and I think it would look better?? Just a thought? The back garden is coming together too, looking forward to the results.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Месяц назад

      I have to be honest. The only thing holding me back is the light. Not sure how to move it! I guess I could dig and find out, but might need some guidance with that one 😬

    • @richardgould1978
      @richardgould1978 Месяц назад +1

      @NoviceGardener yeah the light would probably need an electrician pal...... to extend or reduce the wiring depending on where you put it but I think it would look great 👍........or get rid of it ? I would keep it and move it tho pal as it looks nice. 👌 Good luck with whatever you choose pal and the back 👍 👌

      Ferrex - bought it from Aldi a few years back. Not sure they still sell it, but there's similar still out there.
