  • This crash test film shows how a rollover test is performed using a 1973 Chevy Impala equipped with crash test dummies. After some establishing shots, the actual test can be seen at 3:50 and following, with a car launched sideways of an inclined ramp, causing it to roll over onto the roof three times. Much resultant damage is seen from shattered glass, the departure of the right rear tire, and roof crush damage. At 1:13, close-up shots of the crash test dummies show what might have been the fate of anyone in the car...

    To make this even more interesting, this is one of the 73 Chevrolets that GM equipped with dual airbags. They're visible multiple times here.

    Look at how safe old cars were! The roof smashes in to help absorb the impact!

    They made it 2-3 times, so what did you expect? whatever you say these 72-73 Chevrolets are beautiful and big cars. Land yachts.

    Sure, old metal cars are pretty tough during minor collisions, but they are unsafe on heavy crashes. Along with lack of airbags in general, you take the force due to the rigid body, and they're not designed to absorb rollovers.

      This is literally the first production car made with airbags 🤦‍♂️ gm produced a fleet of 1000 identical green 1973 impalas and they all had airbags in them

      @@Pissrust69 The strange thing is that when they added the airbags, they removed the shoulder belts. Crazy thinking as lap and shoulder belts are the main safety devices in a collision. Airbags are supplemental.

    I love old cars , this truly is amazing as once again , saving money they were not all concerned with safty , While Mercedes were focused on dedication and perfection

    The roof doesn´t look very strong, wobbles around even when not hitting anything
    Still might be better than the convertible

    Say what you want about safety but these cars were beautiful, maybe I’m just young but if I’m gonna die in a crash why not die with some style lol

      Forty years ago when I was 20 years old I was driving a 1970 Buick Electra when a drunk driver in a Chevrolet suburban crossed the center line and hit me head on. Because of the size of my Electra and the fact that I was wearing both the lap and shoulder belts, I walked away with only bruises from the belts which was far better than the unbelted other driver who had massive head and chest injuries from the steering wheel. These older cars were safer than most think, you just have to take advantage of wearing the lap and shoulder belts which were standard equipment. Without the belts, the outcome would be very different. Very few people buckled up back then and paid the price.

      @@bradparris99 how fast were u going? And yes those old style seperate lap and shoulder belts were way better than that retractable crap they brought in later on, but very unpleasant to wear as you cant really move forward to reach anything easily lol

      @@Pissrust69 I was probably going about 50 mph and the drunk driver was going about 45 mph. Glad neither of us was going any faster but it was not a main road and the speed limit was 45. You are absolutely correct about those old style separate lap and shoulder belts really holding you in place, but you really had a secure feeling while wearing them and I guess that was the whole point. Yes the shoulder belt was confining especially in normal every day driving, reaching for the cigarette lighter and the radio was tricky, but given the outcome from the crash I was involved in, the use of those confining belts were well worth the effort and aggravation it took to dutifully wear them.

      @@Pissrust69 The strange thing was that even as a young driver back then I knew the obvious safety aspect of wearing the belts, but it was the enhanced feeling of how the car drove and handled with the belts buckled that got me in the habit of wearing them. The use of the belts really made the car drive a bit more firmly and ride more comfortable than being loose in the seat. Probably if more people had tried wearing them for a couple of days and felt the difference, I suspect more people would have worn the belts, especially the shoulder belt. 🤔

      @@bradparris99 i agree with everything you just said man. 50 mph! Thats actually extremely fast for a head on collision. Thats almost highway speeds. I had a friend loose his life in a head on at 90kmh in a ford escape. Drunk driver in a f250 drove the wrong way down a divided highway and hit him head on

      The problem back then was that hardly anyone wore seat belts. I was in a head on collision in my 1970 Buick Electra and was wearing both the lap and shoulder belts in the collision, I walked away with only bruises from the belts and minor cuts and scratches.
