Clicking left and right click at the same time instantly replaces the block with the one in your hand. E.g., left and right clicking with light blue concrete will instantly change the orange concrete to light blue concrete. Very handy in replacing blocks midair.
Add a beacon under each of the tallest spikes, making the contraption that makes them change into the colours of the rainbow. Have the effects be speed, regen, resistance and jump boost, this will help as new people joining won't die to mobs right away. I joined my server, didn't have any armour, and was spawn killed by boss mobs (ones like the omega wither you faced).
for actually additions lamps you can just right click them to toggle, and they stay in that state. they also have a controller you can use to turn them all on and off at once, and they connect just by touching each other.
Why not use framed blocks, put the coloured lamps then add glowstone. This will make it look like the lamps are glowing, with shaders it will look like a disco ball.
