Power grid resiliency and efficiency is going to become a larger problem as we work to make America less reliant on fossil fuels.
Ames National Lab scientists are working on what goes into the powerlines to make them less likely to break and able to carry more power. Improving the capacity for amps, “Ampacity,” will help move green energy generated in places like Iowa, where Ames National Lab is based, around the country. Right now, these scientists are working with potential industry partners to create a process that can easily manufacture these new and improved powerlines. Working directly with companies means that when the product is ready, it can immediately be sent to market with ready-made manufacturing solutions and techniques.
