  • This week we join Jane Portal, Keeper of the Department of Asia at the British Museum, as she explains the history and rediscovery of the Vulture Peak embroidery - one of the most magnificent of all the compositions found in the hidden library at Dunhuang.
This embroidery dates from China’s Tang dynasty (AD 618-907). It depicts the Buddha preaching at Vulture Peak - in Buddhist tradition a favourite retreat of the Buddha and his disciples, located in what is now north-east India.
It was discovered by archaeologist Sir Aurel Stein (1862-1943) who, while exploring the many caves at Dunhuang, discovered a walled up cave. Behind this wall was a library full of manuscripts paintings and textiles, including this astonishing embroidery.

The tapestry is part of a collection donated to the British Museum by the archaeologist Sir Aurel Stein (1862-1943).

Stein didn't discover that library you're talking about at 1:30. A monk did. Stein bought 10,000 manuscripts for 'a price that will make our friends at the British Museum chuckle...:

What wouldn't I give to be able to go along the silk road in the 19th or 20th centuries. Holy poo what a magical journey it must have been!

I think you might mean 450BCE to 1720 AD. The 20th century was the 1900s, quite recent, and nowhere near as impressive as it would have been in, say, the Byzantine era. (I mean, who wouldn't want to meet Kublai Khan?!)

I'd think it would be quite mucky from all that dust being trotted up and I'd always be looking forward to the next station and be on high alert for weirdos or ne'er do-wells travelling on the same road. Especially if I was on busness

I realy enjoy the videos on this channel and the great work the british museum is doing.
When she says "I'm the keeper of the asia department" I can't help but imagine her batteling invading barbaric hordes to keep the department safe though...

So Stein just straight up lifted it from the temple? How is that acceptable?

This video has two different titles and the comments have nothing to do with the video, they are comments for a video with the first title tagged on to this video about conserving Vulture Peak.

Journey to self Discovery..!*

@@ClementinesCoinsyou should be embarrassing for your words!!! you took stuff from somebody without telling them, and without their approval, that's called stealing!!! all the art from Dunhuang here are carved from walls of Dunhuang caves, by some foreign smugglers, shame on who ever did these ugly things!!! if the Brits have some decency they should give back all the stuff they took from the host nations, then again, the British museum should be pretty empty afterword...shame on those whoever did this!

@@liran547 they literally say in the video the tapestry was left in a sealed off cave rotting away in the mountains along the silk road. it was abandoned so no one wanted it. giving back something their own country doesnt treasure is such a stupid idea, especially a country like china who wouldnt even bother putting it in their own museums.
along those lines, buddhist's are taught to not treasure or want anything so why are you wanting this back when your religion directly contradicts what you want
