  • Welcome to Part 1 of my Ghosts of the Great Central Railway Mainline. We're kicking off with a look at Culworth Junction, just north of Brackley. Here we find the charred remains of the old signal box foundations and adjoining disused railway infrastructure. Around the junction, we see an old permanent way hut. Here the line to London diverged from a branch towards Banbury that linked up with the Great Western Railway (GWR).
We are visiting various locations on the GCR between Culworth Junction in Northamptonshire and Rugby in Warwickshire. Visiting former station sites, bridges, junctions, old infrastructure, viaducts, tunnels and some other interesting stuff.
Great Central Mainline was built as the London Extension of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway. Opening in 1899, it was designed to be as straight as possible with as little gradient as possible. Speed was the aim and express trains travelled between London Marylebone, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester. It was the last UK mainline to be built before HS1 over a century later.
It thrived initially, however with a lack of upkeep, neglect and dwindling usage, it was mothballed during the great railway rationalisation of Dr Beeching in the 1960s - known as the Beeching Axe. Lost railway artefacts and relics are left scattered along the route.

Wow. They keep their disused lines well kept in the midlands! What a lovely grass topping to that long embankment. Awesome start to this series!

Thanks for the walking this day, Paul. Always a great way of ending the work. Relaxing and intellectual. See you on the next. Cheers Paul! 😊

That captured the beginning of the day really well, the drone footage has come out brilliantly, and the opening shots show how immense the bridge was, even in an isolated place like that.

Great stuff Jim. Was great to see the embankment from the air. Gives a great perspective of the long straight characteristics of the GCR

This is just great. It`s what I`ve been waiting for for ages, someone recording what`s left of the GC main line in more detail. Quite a few friend and myself used to catch the 5.15 pm Notts Vic. to London as far as Leicester for the last few years before closure, but never any further south,so it`s good to learn more about the line that I wish that I`d travelled on before it was destroyed. Can`t wait for episode 2.

Fantastic stuff. The GCR through Nottingham fascinates me. Shame there's not more left that's accessible. What a loss when it closed.

Hi Paul, ive been so looking forward to this series. I know very little of the GCR & Northampshire is a county ive never visited so i shall be learning quite alot. The photos are from the year i was born & the burnt out signal box the year after was so sad, just seeing the metal levers remaining until scrapped. ❤😊👍

Really enjoyed the video, showing the epic scale of construction. I am old enough to remember the line in use, as I lived just north of Nottingham at a place called Bulwell Common. Very little left of the Great Central in and around Nottingham but you found some wonderful structures out in the country. Can't wait for the next instalment.

Thanks John. It's a shame there isn't more left of the line north of Nottingham. Especially with what was originally around Annesley. I occassionally use the Robin Hood Line through Bulwell.

Enjoyed that, though it seemed to fly by in a couple of minutes! The trackbed there looked very well kept, or maybe local sheep? Would love to see the missing bridge restored, and maybe parts of the line used again to connect these communities. Probably a vain hope, but you never can tell, after all, as you said, it was made to such a high standard and took so much hard work, it's always heartbreaking to see it derelict. Looking forward to more

👍 Indeed, I think it was sheep. Or Cows. I could do with sending an army of goats in advance to some of the other locations I've been filming at recently. 😄

@@WobblyRunner I knew someone that had a very overgrown garden. They got a goat with the intention of it keeping the rampant foliage in check. Within a couple of weeks the single goat had devoured the whole jungle and they needed to bring extra food in to keep it fed. A platoon of the creatures might be enough for the lineside mission.

Some of the drone shots of the embankment make it look like an ancient defensive earthwork like Offa's Dyke. Incredible amount of work went into that thing and look at it now. ☹️

Fantastic shot of the banking isnt it, stretching off into the distance in a straight line. Could see it for miles approaching by road too. Some effort went into that.

How about the 2 Parts of the Great Central Railway which now a HERITAGE RAILWAY, will that Section be included... The Leicester North To Loughborough Section & Loughborough to Ruddington Section...
