Most of these Rugby players that were playing, played cricket in school.
I know Faf played a bit of cricket while in school, aswell as Butch James.

I'm an Indian and I'm amazed to find the quality of cricket exhibited by some of the South African rugby players!! Even being able to bowl with a straight arm is a noticeable thing when you're a sportsman from another sport. And I noticed one guy even taking trigger movements while batting. Wow! And, how????
They play cricket at school. Many SA Cricketers start off first as Rugby players, but due to injury, shift to Cricket.
Then there are cases where they played Cricket at school, but their coaches encourage them to tryout for rugby and et Viola, we have a new Springbok instead of a Protea. Good case in point is our Faf de Klerk. He started out playing Cricket at school and is now the best scrum half in the world! We love you crazy Faf!❤😂

No they aren't. They would have played cricket in school or universities. Or might have played for their province at U19 level. But at senior level it's not easy to play both the sports at the same time.
