  • Cattle Decapitation vocalist Travis Ryan talks about their politically-charged, misanthropic lyrics, why vocals should always come secondary to the music, why they're NOT a grindcore band, how they've managed to get more popular with each records (whereas most bands don't), how line-up changes helped them improve and why any musician should start out as a drummer. September 30, 2016.

Their music has just gotten more chaotic, maniacal, brutal, compared to when I first heard them but I was still blown away to how crazy this band sounded. I've been on and off with them but when their last album came out, I saw there was a bit more structure to their extremity. Over all, MUCH respect for this band keeping it real and getting better each album. I love all their discographies. I hope I can see them again on suffocations farewell frank tour!

Just like how carcass went... they went straight up grindcore/goregrind and eventually moved towards more death metal/melodic kinda stuff where as cannibal corpse started as a brutal thrash band and moved on to more brutal styles of death metal that never borderline anything other than their thrash and hardcore influences (and other death metal of course) thats why I say they remind me of Carcass :p

      Sound-wise, Cattle is too metallic to be a grindcore band. To qualify for grindcore "tag" you need to incorporate a lot of hardcore punk and crust punk elements. That is missing in Cattle's music. Even Travis himself admits to that - no d-beats, no formulaic simplistic song structures and definitively too technical and too metallic to be a grindcore band. Even their most grindy stuff, earlier stuff is still deathgrind, not pure grindcore.

    • @iachtulhu1420
      @iachtulhu1420 Год назад +1

      @@jarednd Not per se, but in the old days they hung around that scene, and punk scene in general much more then in metal scene. Their first wo records still retained their punky sounds to an extent, which is what you can hear especially on their demo and debut album. Grindcore elements are definitively a strong presence there, even on Realm of Chaos you can hear those unarticulated down-tuned grindcore riffs and even some blast beats which they have stopped using after this album. Still, the majority of their career and discography is firmly in metal, particular death metal territory.

  • @voidtofillNC

    I honestly don't see how people think they are tech death. Like at all. Just because the production is more clean doesn't mean they are tech death. Their instrumentation doesn't remind me of really any tech death bands beside maybe cryptopsy and that's pushing it. I think their classic stuff was definitely grindcore, then they went to more deathgrind and when their last album came out it was much more just death metal with their own specific sound. Either way cattle hasen't lost all their grind influence, they've just found a way to revolutionize it and make it much more easy to grasp.

      Could be, but not necessarily. I know some hardcore punk artists and songs that are infinitely more intense, brutal, faster and more evil sounding than any thrash metal or even death metal for that matter. Grindcore is just a logical progression of historical melting point between two extremes of punk (hardcore punk/crustcore and metallic crust punk/stenchcore) and two early extremes of metal (first of death and black metal), but in grindcore punk element is much more present than in any other kind of crossover genre because of rich history of interrelation with punk sound, ethos and scene.

      Not just d-beats. Grindcore riffs are basically faster hardcore punk power chords comparable to faster parts in regular hardcore songs. The degree to which some grindcore band is metallic is debatable, but even the most metallic grindcore bands do still have this punky elements and that's what I like about that genre - the consistency and intensity that is carried over from punk, especially hardcore punk styles that built the basis for extreme music to come in the early 80s.
