I wanted to thank you because this video helped me a lot. In my case, I used a layer of foam which was very difficult to install but was totally worth it.
I personally did the tempest mod on mine with 2 layers of tape and lubed the switches and it sounds and feels a lot nicer, the keys don't feel scratchy anymore. I also ordered some neoprene foam adhesive but as it is right now it feels like a really great improvement and I think adding it in is probably unnecessary
A tip from someone who watches a lot of custom keyboard vids. Make the before and after modding sounds a bit shorter, especially the before sound. You'd be surprised how quickly someone gets bored of asmr keyboard sounds. Hope that helps!
Hi, only if you would swap the switches for something else. You could also try o-rings. They will put your keys slightly higher so the travel feel will change, but they also have a special sound tweak so worth to try and see.
I have this keyboard and used o rings. I got new key caps and it was also necessary so they didn’t bottom out on the board. I used a combo of 2mm and 3mm o rings. 2.5 might be a happy medium
@@raffitchakmakjian7498 it’s been a while since I’ve taken this apart. But if you take the yellow plate out I think all types of crap would get in the keyboard.
HI, I have the same keyboard and some of the keys are not working properly, I need to prees them really hard in order to work. How do you recommend fixing it? lube? Isopropyl alcohol? Thanks
Ciao! isopropyl alc, yes, little by little in between stem and casing, and between drops continuously press the key so that alcohol can get to the affected contacts within the switch. I strongly recommend removing batteries and turning the keyboard on to reduce the risk of capacitors going wild.
I just foam and tape modded mine. Pretty great results not going to lie. However, now I have an issue with the on/off switch being hard to move and stay in place once it gets there. Any suggestions?
Glad you like it! For the switch, that might be a tape or something from the modding that interferes with it internally, you'd need to disassemble it again to troubleshoot. Be careful though that switch is tiny and if something blocks it then you need to disassemble the keyboard slowly to not pry it off.
@@ProArt18 yeah. I’ve taken it apart and cleared anything I could find but no luck so far. I didn’t think about lifting it up and checking under it though. Or do I need to clear the tape in that’s area from the PCB?
@@definitelynotchadfish the tape can lift the pcb slightly and push the switch towards the top, so indeed you might need to remove a bit of tape from that area, also try if the switch works fine when it's outside the housing
Yeah it differs from the usual cherry profile but it's closer to the xda profile as it's quite flat. Brown switches help to have that accentuated feeling when switching from key to key, I bet with linears these keycaps would not be as comfortable. Sound is also a bit affected by the keycaps but not drastically in this case.
From my experience, these keycaps are dumb :( It was very uncomfortable for me to type, the key travel was too long, and my fingers fell into the spaces between the keys. I changed the keycaps to low-profile ones (all the keycaps got up, except for the space) and all printing problems disappeared. The keyboard itself is great if you mod it and change the keycaps.
@@more_nya6436 I agree there with the keycaps! i went for a Honeymilk keycap set i got off amazon, the only dowmfall is the space bar is too large to fit on the keyboard with the other keys attached, but nothing like a bit of sandpaper wont fix! (only need to sand a tiny tiny bit off the left and right of the spacebar!)
If you are ok with soldering then definitely you could replace it. Only challenge is that you have to find the same switches to match the height, feel and look. These roccat switches are more often found used as roccat doesn't really offer replacement parts. You can sometimes find a very cheap non working board and salvage the switches
How did you take off the plastic frame? I cannot seem to pry open the top side. The left, right, and bottom side were easy. But the top side seem to be stuck
@@secrethumanmachine I actually just did this with the same keyboard and had pretty decent results. It's not a super drastic difference but I can assure you that the difference is there. It also made the board feel quite a bit better for me. But I have have 3mm o rings on most keys and 2mm on the top row and some others that need it
For the 10K people who may like the looks but not the sound, or who got it as a gift, or who have a spouse or child who wanted this board and now annoy you with its stock sound, or for those just curious.
I was looking to buy this keyboard and was interested to see how it would sound modded, thankfully I found your video, thank you for making this !
Did you ever get one?

I must mod my Pop keeby! The sound is driving me a little bit nuts! Thanks for showing us the way!

Update: added the neoprene and it sounds less hollow

Was considering buying it, this video is very helpful. Thanks
Any chance you could do a step by step tutorial? 🙏🏽
I love the feel of this keyboard, and I love the video. Do you have a way to shorten the travel of the keys?

Did not know This keyboard could kindish thocc with some mods
A special video.
So, to remove only the yellow plate you need to remove all the screws?
Better to do so to avoid any damage along the way ;)

Wonder how they would sound with GMK switches
0:32 Because of course they'd want to make it destructive and/or a pain, why wouldn't they.
nice sound profile, might try this myself when i buy one of these. do the rounded keycaps effect typing at all?

What kind of scredriver did you use? I have the same keyboard and couldn't open it. Nice job btw, it sounds great
Hi, I got to use torx screwdriver bits, something between T7 and T9 if I'm not mistaken
if one switch stop working, what can I do for it ? Can I replace it by myself

Did you need to desolder and switches
I didn't desoldier them. I found it was not worth it as most of the hollow gaps are below the main board
Did you need to resolder some parts to reattach the board completely?
How did you take off the plastic frame? I cannot seem to pry open the top side. The left, right, and bottom side were easy. But the top side seem to be stuck
Check maybe there are still screws below the feets - the feets are removable
Thanks for the fast reply! You’re right, there were some screw left.
What kind of screwdriver do you need for it?
hmm, it's been a while since, I believe it's a T6 you need
Great video, just one question is this keyboard hotswap?
Hi! The keyboard is not hotswap ;)
Very helpful, thank you!
How did you lube the switches? Are these hotswappable?
I lubed them from topside without desoldering with something like pen lube
did you also lubing every individual swtiches?
or just the stabs?
Each switch and stab, stabs with a thick grease and switches with a quite thin vaseline oil similar to superlube
@@ProArt18 How did you do lube the switches? Any video or tutorial you'd recommend following?
@@mtorressahli you can either spray lube the switches or get 2 drops of super lube oil on each end of the switch
