When I was much younger, I met you at MagFest and you signed my MegaMan 2 cartridge while riding the escalator! I'm sure you don't remember, but it was such an amazing moment for me. I always loved your videos back then. And now, years later, you've even talked about the games I've made on your podcast! (like Return to Castle Monkey Ball). Who knows how my passion for gaming, and eventually game development, would have changed if not for the retro gaming community and people like you to entertain us all. Thanks so much!

It’s shitty the way workers are treated and farmed in America. I’m glad you got out of that environment. It makes me happy whenever I see others escape toxic work environments and finally begin to work the careers they want AND need. We only live once, and work is essential but should never take full-control of your life. Congrats Pat.

It's sad to say that Pat's experience isn't unique. So many people in America and other countries are suckered into a 'career', given a fancy job title, and get squeezed for every breath they have. It's no way to go through life.

@@apri1979 it's especially bad in America and Japan. I spent 20 years on Wall St. after my time in video games. I used to be Senior Editor of VGA magazine. I got into finance because of the allure of money. It destroyed my health and I had heart bypass surgery.
Now I can look back and say I had a good life but I should have never left gaming, even if I didn't make the money I made in finance. Money means nothing if you're miserable or dead.

The problem is that some of the items you carry/stock can be heavy with no easy way to properly lift it. I got one coworker who had a hernia and two others who are older and have nothing left on their rotators.

Pat, I can say you along with HeyPoorPlayer literally changed my life. After my son died I was in a dark place (obviously). I started writing for HPP to kinda numb my brain and it kept me active by playing/reviewing video games. That year I attended Too Many Games and my EIC set up an interview with you that I was to conduct. I enjoyed our interview so much that I emailed you that night and asked you to keep me in mind if you ever decided to make a SNES Guidebook. I believe you got back to me that same night and asked for me to send you my work, which I did. I believe I sent you my Paperboy review for the Master System and you got back to me the next day and offered me a position on your staff of writers. Helping write that book and working with you, and Asheton, and the rest of the team kept my mind focused and really helped me mentally. Working on the N64 book has been an amazing ride too! So, yes. Without sounding too selfish, you made the right decision.

Thanks for sharing the story Pat. Also as many have said in the comments you are always extremely pleasant in person, met you a few times at Retro World Expo in CT. Like you said this is def a story that many share. The risk was definitely worth the reward and I truly enjoy all of your content and what you have given to the retro community. Been following your content since 2015, One of the true OGs. Look forward to what’s to come!

I quit my job of 11 years a little while back to go back to school full time and man, what a journey it's been! Certainly experienced highs and lows, but so far things are well. Thanks for sharing your story. LIfe's too short to feel stuck. Sometime's a leap of faith is just what the doctor ordered.

Hey Pat. Co-incidentally, me and the wife decided to also resign on the 19th of July 2022 and submitted our resignation letters the following day. What you described about being overworked and basically dying at your job resonated with me on a personal level, and I just want to say thank you for sharing your story. We're moving to the ocean and hope for a successful new beginning doing something we love, and finding our happiness again without being smothered in the corporate world. Anyways, thank you, and all the best.

Pat I just met you for the 4th time (?) At too many games. You have always been the underdog and I really relate to that. I had that wrist band I have the pin
ian is also another relatable and loveable guy too. Your content as I've told you in person is always a comfort. Nothing but love and this video is inspiring me to maybe make the plunge to less work hours at work And more dedication to my channel. Much love to you,Ian and Frank. The underdog channel of RUclips.

I started getting into your vids around late 2012 early 2013 and your podcast came at the perfect time when I needed something else to listen to on my long drives to my girlfriend (now wife) at the time. You two have become one of my favorite pods to listen to about retro focused topics.

This gives me some hope that maybe one day I'll be doing something I love for a living. Lots to be thankful for, if I'm keeping perspective, but life could be so much better. At 40, the ship has likely sailed for me, but who knows I guess? C'est la vie. Somehow it makes me feel good knowing that life has worked out pretty well for at least some people, whether it ever will for me or not. Wishing you continued success, Pat.

I'm a line cook for Swiss Chalet (Canadian chain restaurant) and I'm just about ready to put it on the back burner or quit entirely to pursue my fitness & health career on Instagram and hopefully in a real space/gym/studio, that part you talk about when you got your first advertiser seems relevant. I like the part how you capitalized on the nes' 25th anniversary and did your own thing that hasn't been done before and to this day.

Honestly that's really amazing you were able to have a successful RUclips career after quitting your day job. It kind of feels like a lot of people are able to do that. James rolfe, Scott Wozniak, but I mean that's just because they're well known on the internet. Most people cannot just quit their day job to be on youtube. I was hoping that would have been me 7 years ago but it didn't work out. I suffered from burnout when recording and editing every video by myself every week and just couldn't do it. I was constantly editing all the time and when I wanted to get help with it by a good friend of mine he slacked off and barely did anything I ended up having to edit the video that he had started editing at the last minute when I gave him plenty of time to actually make the damn video. It was incredibly frustrating.
I'm actually very introverted so like if I wanted to meet the right people to maybe help me have a staff on RUclips or something I don't even know if I can because I just can't really open up that well in person. I'm a lot better at doing so in front of the camera or you know in front of my computer or smartphone
Anyways that is actually really nice to hear that your channel got so big after you quit your day job. I remember watching your channel before the podcast when it was primarily pat the NES punk and although your channel was always bigger than mine it was fair to say that your channel wasn't considered huge at the time. It's great that you took the risk and it paid off. It also helps you had people who can help you with that so you wouldn't have to do it by yourself. I guess my problem is that when it comes to my RUclips channel I am literally doing everything by myself so I just don't have the as much time to edit videos of top quality anymore and I don't always have something new to say so I don't feel like I can even do podcasts although I'm sure if I had enough influence maybe I can do podcast cuz sometimes I have a whole lot to say but it might be difficult to have a lot to say about the right subjects.
Anyways I know this is long, but in the end honestly congrats!

This is very cool to see. I think I found you sometime in 2010, while I was finishing college, followed closely for a few years, fell off as life happened, listen to the podcast from time to time. This video hits perfect for me. Just today, I quit my job. I was not there for very long, but it was absolutely wrecking me. I have a part-time contract job lined up, but I'm definitely feeling a little hesitant and still a little shocked I went through with it. Hearing about what you've done in the past 10 years while also reminiscing about my own past 10 definitely makes my decision feel a bit better. Keep up the good work, cheers to 10 more and beyond.

Pat - I’m happy your life went the way you wanted it to after leaving your full-time desk job. I’ve been in a similar position for 7 years. I’ve always been afraid to just walk away and try something. It’s nice to see these types of stories to at least know what’s possible. Sure wish we could get quarterly NES punk vids. I only started listening to the CUPodcast to keep supporting you so you could keep doing NES punk. Of course I ended up liking the podcast but still I was here, am here, and always will be here, for Punk vids. Sad that it is basically dead.
The NES book in my opinion is the greatest video game book ever made. It is absolutely incredible and I am thankful to have it in my collection.
