46100 Royal Scot flattens the 1/49 gradient to Goathland! | North Yorkshire Moors Railway | 11/2/24

- Today’s video is of LMS Royal Scot class 4-6-0 46100 ‘Royal Scot’ on its 2024 half term excursions at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway! She was there acting as a replacement for the unavailable BR Standard 7 4-6-2 70000 'Britannia'. Resident LMS Black Five 4-6-0 44806 was also in operation on the Spring Moorlander dining train. Two Royal Scot excursions were running, that being two return runs from Pickering, whilst 44806 hauled just the one return trip from Grosmont. It was my first visit to the line so I had to try out 3 new different spots along the tough 1 in 49 gradient from Grosmont to Goathland. A massive thanks to my ‘secondary planner’ for helping me with the locations, she certainly chose well! Thank you also to the weather which gave me an easier day than I thought I'd have.
I took an LNER train down from my local to Darlington, changing and changing again in Middlesbrough for a rubbish little unit down the branch to Grosmont. Unfortunately the train was running late meaning I had only 11 minutes after arrival in Grosmont before 46100 departed. I did make it to my first planned location but apologies for the first shot being a little shaky as I'd only just put the tripod down as Royal Scot appeared around the corner, blasting up the incline. Next, it was through an extraordinarily muddy field to Iron Bridge for 44806 which made quite a sound! I'm certain I've never heard a Black 5 sound like that before. After that I had a relaxed walk along the rail trail, having a look at future locations around Beck Hole before setting up at Darnholme near the top of the incline. Around 30 minutes before her appearance, the sun came out and 46100 was bathed in light as she tackled the last part of the gradient.
Thanks to all who made this possible, to the NYMR, 44806 and 46100 as well as their crews! I hope you enjoy as I did, it was great to see 46100 at the NYMR!

You did incredibly well to get that far up the bank in 11 minutes, I'd have settled for Esk Valley! Judicious editing at the end of the Iron Bridge shot.😂😂

On the 24th of February I’ve got a railtour that’s coming my way and it’s diesel hauled as far as Carnforth where tangmere will take over
And this is the first pathfinder tour for tangmere
