Incredible video. I think the calm spoken word really adds to the music. Imagine if instead of his walking monologue it was the boyfriend from the lyrics recounting his version of the facts.
Of course she doesn't HAVE to quote another song and I'm sure she knows that! She is playing with the themes in Hallelujah, explaining what influence it had on her etc. It's also pretty funny: "The original Leonard Cohen version" - that made me laugh, I think she's poking fun at people who rail against any of the covers of the song and think they're sophisticated for preferring Cohen's versiom, whilst also agreeing that his version's best. I really like her and this song.
I think this song and this video pretty much sums up how a person's first love is like--innocent, pretty, serene, and then it starts become a chaotic mish mash of things before it comes to sudden end, and then you move on.
@PredatorFilmsInc man, I made this video. she asked me to do it. we're friends. n unlike "mainstream" artists we didnt have much money, she doesnt even have a youtube channel, etc. I hosted this on my personal channel for her. from 200 summin comments I never cared about positive or negative comments. but I get an email update for every comment so I cant have "rants"!! that dude was posting endless comments in minutes. my phone was going f'in crazy
To think her ambition was to be a back-up singer. She's captivated me with her voice, her lyrics, her shifting eyes to make sure she doesn't miss a queue... I can't even express how taken I am with her.
was talking to emma at the gig in newcastle .. and i believe she got back with the guy she writes about in the song.. great gig tho .. one of the best i've been to andi do go to a few..
I wouldn't say it made her seem derivative. All she has done is quote someone elses song, used it as a background. Her music is very good and i think that if anything, this has made her seem more original because she has taken something and made something new.
Listened to this stoned the other day...the drums at the end were sending me west :( Great song though, found out about it from Adam's big mixtape :) Loving the show.
@GummiHug That was a later event. This song is based on a novella she had read about a man who takes a woman back to his room to sleep with her then they never meet again. The Hallelujahs are a reference (largely) to Leonard Cohen's song, although arguably of course even in that song they're a reference to sex. The clearest demonstration of the story you've heard is in Trellick Tower on the second album.
Not always, Elbow, Interpol, Sigur Ros, Blur (all Think Tank singles), Bat For Lashes, Modest Mouse etc.pp. have fantastic music videos that add a lot to the songs. Unfortunately, videos like that don't get played that often, nowadays. But they exist, believe me.
dont know if im wrong about this .. but a poem is without tune and verse can be written with a tune in mind or not .. and when the tune is added.. then the combination is a song.. i really rate emma's songs.. they prod you in the eye and say look at me.. take notice..
@KyleKash91 The juxtaposition of the images is discordant because the song is about remembering, reconstructing, obsessing with the past but never being able to smooth over the pain.
Saw you in Sheffield supporting NaTW on the just over a week ago. Thought you played a great set! Just sorry about the knobheads who tried to ruin it for everyone. Definitely live up to your name though!
shit where is she playing? is this single/album just been released cos its all over itunes and like half the of the album has been out for ages. THE ORIGINAL LEONARD COHEN VERSION god that is refreshing.
Can someone tell me how to make the sounds from :38 and on? I've toyed with a few different programs and can't create anything close to it--it sounds so western showdownish, it's fantastic and one of my favourite parts of this song.
Is she Emmy the great cause she's great at ventriloquism at 3:01?? Pretty neat!! How does she does it. I also like the little girl lost look. Pretty nice. I like her on the song with ASH called: What Ever Happened. (ASH is great.)
Yes that could be right too! I just thought it would be typical of her to gently poke fun, because in another of her songs she mocks someone (a tiny bit) for worshipping Bob Dylan. Plus she is funny. I heard that once she told a journo that her DJ name was DJ Emmyroids.
A USED CAR SALESMAN BROUGHT ME HERE
And not just because he got a DUI during his divorce
Same lol
Incredible video. I think the calm spoken word really adds to the music. Imagine if instead of his walking monologue it was the boyfriend from the lyrics recounting his version of the facts.
We refuse to become cogs in the machine
same. yosemite burns and the colorado river dries up. so i walk.
Came here because of the car salesman trying to heal the Earth 🌎
Lmao literally just came here from that 😂

she is one of he greatest song writers in history.
I think this song and this video pretty much sums up how a person's first love is like--innocent, pretty, serene, and then it starts become a chaotic mish mash of things before it comes to sudden end, and then you move on.
I first heard of this lady earlier today and I am hooked already.
@PredatorFilmsInc man, I made this video. she asked me to do it. we're friends. n unlike "mainstream" artists we didnt have much money, she doesnt even have a youtube channel, etc. I hosted this on my personal channel for her. from 200 summin comments I never cared about positive or negative comments. but I get an email update for every comment so I cant have "rants"!! that dude was posting endless comments in minutes. my phone was going f'in crazy

was talking to emma at the gig in newcastle .. and i believe she got back with the guy she writes about in the song..
great gig tho .. one of the best i've been to andi do go to a few..
According to Emmy, this song was not inspired by her own experience:
ruclips.net/video/E67bsPc6lPw/видео.html.
Brilliant performance Thank you for making my day. Earl of Ancram Charles.

i went to one of her concerts in the union chapel with my best friend and even though i had never heard her before i just sort of fell in love
Love it...
great video, great music
definitely going to see her at the big chill, this year!
I wouldn't say it made her seem derivative. All she has done is quote someone elses song, used it as a background. Her music is very good and i think that if anything, this has made her seem more original because she has taken something and made something new.
who cares about the video..? i just want to see her and hear her voice... make me feel peacefull..
Reminds me of Aimee Mann, great lyrics, great stuff!!
Listened to this stoned the other day...the drums at the end were sending me west :(
Great song though, found out about it from Adam's big mixtape :) Loving the show.
she is only quoting because she is singing about a story that this guy wrote and that song must be a key factor in the story
:O I cant wait for the album!
I'm a rocker, but this song made me melt ;>
Top played song in my iTunes
the video is genius.
i can't believe PixelToy supported her in HK, i wish Emmy could have brought them over here.

best song

"The original Leanord Cohen Version" classy, Emmy (Y) Mx
Great!
emmy the great should really should consider rescuing the music industry of hong kong by singing a few tracks in cantonese

"The orginal... Leonard Cohen version" (Y)
God Bless You Emmy!! Mxx
normaly i don´t like female voices, or let´s say i prefer male voices. but she is really great. i think i´ll have to buy some of her music.
@BeanDentist Yup! Just listening to it now!
Good to see someone who doesn't have to be naked to sing
dont know if im wrong about this .. but a poem is without tune and verse can be written with a tune in mind or not .. and when the tune is added.. then the combination is a song..
i really rate emma's songs.. they prod you in the eye and say look at me.. take notice..
i.. fell in love with her...
My favourite song at the moment
@KyleKash91 The juxtaposition of the images is discordant because the song is about remembering, reconstructing, obsessing with the past but never being able to smooth over the pain.
the guy in the red top is really fit(:
but she is singing, sir. And being paid for it.
cool
Yo-yos how do they work? - Emmy
Spn fam, where you at?
I like the spaghetti western riffs.
I
It's depressing that there's not music like this in the charts. Rap/Hip Hop/Pop = crap,
proud of hong kong ;D
@Inthemoodfor2046 thank you!
Coming soon. Second Love. Hope it's a better experience than the first...
Hellelujah!!

Saw you in Sheffield supporting NaTW on the just over a week ago.
Thought you played a great set!
Just sorry about the knobheads who tried to ruin it for everyone.
Definitely live up to your name though!
The next great female pop artist, I think.
@Ziegour lots of Chinese people have English accents because often they are, infact, acctually English..
shit where is she playing? is this single/album just been released cos its all over itunes and like half the of the album has been out for ages. THE ORIGINAL LEONARD COHEN VERSION god that is refreshing.

I think it strikes me that way because some band like Fall Out Boy or Panic a thte Disco quoted the same song.
I dig the middle class lost girl persona. This is the girl all the nerd guys crush on.
Is she Emmy the great cause she's great at ventriloquism at 3:01??
Pretty neat!! How does she does it. I also like the little girl lost look. Pretty nice. I like her on the song with ASH called: What Ever Happened. (ASH is great.)
RIC!! :P:P:P:P ric i love you
ped x
Seriously? That was a cheeky ode to the infamous song, "Hallelujah", by Leonard Cohen.
Yes that could be right too! I just thought it would be typical of her to gently poke fun, because in another of her songs she mocks someone (a tiny bit) for worshipping Bob Dylan. Plus she is funny. I heard that once she told a journo that her DJ name was DJ Emmyroids.
@Cantocourse mentioned on adam buxton podcast i believe, not bad
@Ciaran646 Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Ashanti, Mya
@RoughshodElm for real
i love her voice but sometimes it sounds like shes singing whilst suffering through a cold
@xxCorinnaxx i think Jeff Buckly did the best version, it really brings a tear to my eye :')
definitely a grower. wasnt sure at first.
Goodness, I have a friend named Emmy who could pass for Emmy the Great's sister.
