I bought one of these last week on Amazon (had bought the Uberleben tinder wick too) and took out to the Dinosaur Tracks in Picketwire Canyon in La Junta Colorado this week for a quick Winter camping trip. I'm embarrassed to admit I had never struck a ferro rod before, this was my first but watched a different video by Mark Young and emulated him and I struck a fire on the frayed end of the tinder Wick using this hex ferro rod with just a few strikes. It put out a lot of sparks. I'll be keeping it in my 4Runner for overlanding excursions.
I’ll keep this one in mind for the next time I need to replace my ferro rod. (I should wear out the ones I have in about 20 years) Thanks for the video.👍🔥⛺️ Now I think I’ll go check out that there knife!
Thanks for the review and testing. As another commented, it would be interesting to see a side by side test in darkness, to see the actual volume of sparks. There was one part of the video toward the beginning I had to pause and rewind a few times just for fun. At about 1:15 a pair of squirrels are scampering up a tree behind you. They're out of frame in a few seconds, but it definitely added to the video. Great video sir.
Nice video. First non round ferro I've seen. I suppose that the larger contact area should produce more spark. Makes sense. I wonder how a 1/2" square one would do?
Hey Bruce. I believe the cut out is intended as a bottle opener. It sounds funny but it appears on a number of Chinese made strikers. It does not fit around the body of the Hexa. The curved end is intended for striking ferro rods but it would just start to round the sides out if I used that. Thank you for commenting
My uberleben broke from using one side. Anyways it's a bit softer rod in my opinion. I will say the customer service by the company is amazing. The epoxy in the handle on mine didnt take and the rod kept falling out. I contacted them and they offered to replace it and let me keep the other as well. They also gave me like a 20% discount off my next purchase
Smaller ferro-rods are more convenient to carry but I find the larger ones produce more spark. That is unless the smaller on is from Light My Fire which has a different formulation of materials and sparks differently. Thanks for commenting
That is one way of looking at it. Another way would be more sparks per stroke means fewer strokes resulting in a rod that lasts longer. Thanks for commenting
Nothing wrong with the LMF. I wish they weren't so dear in cost here. Maybe a message to Uberleben to see if they have a UK distributor. Thank you for commenting
@@jimf1964 Yes, there is a difference by manufacture. The Light My Fire rods are softer, produce sparks more easily but are not as hot. Mostly not an issue if you have a good tinder to catch the spark. Take a look at my other video on the Uberleben Kraftig. Thanks for commenting Jim

Thank you for sharing your experience. A little bit of practice and the ferro rod becomes a fund and easy tool to use
Ontario Blackbird probably best ''Survival'' Knife on the market. Thanks for the video Mark
I agree. A great knife that does not get as much credit as it deserves. Thanks for commenting
I was looking forward to this review. Thanks for the video Mark!

Can't go wrong with this ferro-rod and the knife is one of the best for sure. Thanks for commenting
Apparently fashioned after a 14mm Allen key.... fascinating. Thumbs up Mark!
Never thought of that. Cool. Thanks for commenting
Interesting concept that seems to work well. Thanks Mark!🤙
Works pretty good. Thanks for commenting Wade

Funny thing is I did not see the squirrels until I was editing the video. Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for commenting

I believe square rods are available by another seller. It would be interesting to compare. Thanks for commenting
Great side by side Test, Mark, Both winners I would say ! Be Well, Friend ! ATB T God Bless
I guess the important thing is they both make fire😉. Thanks for commenting Terry
Nice review / demonstration......Take care, Bluefin.

Good vid as usual, Mark.
Thank you very much
Was the purpose of the cut out on the long side of the scraper to catch two flats at the same time? If so, why didn't you try it?

I've been thinking of picking one of these up !
You can borrow mine to try if you would like

great Video, THX. I prefer the smaller ones

@@MarkYoungBushcraft U are right.
You tried the corners buddy ? To me they might be the best 🙂 I’ve seen a couple of other vids where they just used they flat side not the corners
I have not tried the corners yet. I will give it a try and report back if it works better than the flats. Thanks for commenting
No thank yo sir 🙂
nice video
Thanks for the visit
More surface area in contact should produce more sparks, and consequently wear down faster, and eventually sell more replacement rods. Peace

It is a good ferro-rod for sure. Thanks for commenting Spook

I can't import one to the UK from anywhere, guess I'll have to stick with my Light My Fire.

@@MarkYoungBushcraft Thanks for the reply. I do like my LMF but I would like an option of a softer, higher-spark rod.
You were in too big a rush to play with your new toy to wait to film a little at night, or maybe in a darkened room? 🙂
Maybe so but sparks are just for show. The proof is in its ability to light fires 😀 Thanks for commenting
I've heard there are some, depending on the specific make up, that make sparks hotter than others. Do you believe there's any merit to that?
